I agree with you completely. The show is made well and has intriguing elements but it takes so long to get there and they’re so worried about protecting the mystery that most of the time you’re just wandering around aimlessly watching but not understanding. Then when you finally get the answers you’re like “that was it?”. They set her up to be some secret Jason Bourne. I won’t say it’s a total letdown or waste of time, the performances are strong and there are some genuinely thrilling twists and turns, but it doesn’t hit the mark. Too bad because it has a lot of good bones. Just needed to be cut tighter.

In my eyes the series is good, it's not a masterpiece but it's not a stinker. Netflix is a mixed basket of better and worse series and for a random pick I made the other night, this one and 1899 were good picks I made. The acting is good, the atmosphere is 100% done well, the locations are simple enough to recognize and work with, the 30'yr old daugther is a mess just as it should be, well done!

The total lack of any resemblance between young Jane and Toni Collette is very distracting. It seemed like she was going to be some CIA badass because of her ninja moves in the cafe, but she only had a bit of lame terrorist training, and just witnessing a guy slice a throat with a knife through his hand doesn't give her the same ability.

I would have liked the series to begin at the diner when the drama started. I almost quit it because the first episode had a first takeoff. But, I respectfully disagree with your review. I like that there are more quetions than answers. I like that it's not predictable. It has enough drama, intensity, mystery and missing answers that keep viewers guessing and intrigued. I'd give it a way higher rating than you did.

I love Toni Colette and that is why I started watching this show… I’m in beginning of episode 4…..but I’m having a hard time watching it because I’m yelling at the screen because of the daughter….plus there are some gaps…. I mean how did the guy at the bar get on her trail just hours after the guy broke into her house….. for me the daughter is kind of ruining it for me … just my opinion

I agree. this could've been 4 episode max. It/s VERY slow paced mini series with many, many repetitions. It started interesting, but soon turned into "can't wait to end".
@orion88352 жыл бұрын
I have found the whole series heavy, draining and while credible in it’s storyline, yet nevertheless dry. Collette plays so many situations but it all just became ugly after a while when it should have become thrilling for the viewer. The slide down is compounded with her plain speaking daughter who runs all over the place as if she is a spy ( she’s not) with some kind of training ( she has none) . It gets goofy. The men are quite sexy in this film, the women all plain. It’s a rather odd film that headaches with endless flashbacks making Toni Colette play so many situations it’s a wonder we all didn’t lose our identity in the process watching it. I felt it was interesting but after a while I just didn’t care anymore. Everyone felt long gone and rather futile with far too many secrets. It could have been done better. There was a lack of hope nor one character that felt they had a future. Dreary watching. And I think that was the point that people make horrible des idiots in life instigated by others and plots abound in those identities. In turn changing some course of destiny. Only to spend ages setting the record straight and chasing after the reversal. But it all felt too late.

Appreciate the review. I like Toni Collette but this seems like a miss for me. Right now watching Devotion, an Italian production about a couple and their relationship. I'm not usually into this type of movie, but the chemistry and machinations going on are beyond the usual cookie cutter scripts of marital affairs. Very engaging, excellent acting, directing and nice views of Milan where it's set. I spent a lot of time in Italy, Rome, Padua, Venice and Sicily, but never Milan. After watching this I want to go!

I so agree with your review. I really wanted to love this series but I barely liked it. Flashbacks aren’t my favorite tool to reveal a storyline, and here they were hardly ever clear as to what I was watching. I also normally love Toni Collette’s acting but I never warmed up to her character. The ending to me, instead of a shock, was a more like yeah I could see that. Then I was angry because I sat and watched the whole thing hoping it would get better but never did. Oh well.

As always, an excellent overview. I'm on episode 5. I like the series but I need them to spill the beans spilled a little more as the story progresses. I think the daughter is the main person in the book but when you have Toni Collette playing the mom.... The actions of the daughter are too immature for a 30 year old. I know she wants to unravel the story of her mom but I cringe every time she does something traceable or just down right dumb (all the visiting..is just a hard no!). Also still in the dark on who are the good guys. With 3 episodes left, I can smell a plot twist.

I have just gotten halfway through the second episode. I almost didn't finish the first because I couldn't take how dumb and annoying the 30-year-old daughter was. Oh my goodness. I wanted to reach through the screen and knock some sense into her! LOL, Toni was the only thing that kept me watching.

I think the writing was very poor. If you really pay attention and think about it, both the characters are depicted as falling prey to horrible naïveté, and display just blatantly bad decision-making at several points. The mom is often spiteful towards the decent people who are trying to help. The daughter is just whiny and immature. It doesn’t paint a very pretty picture of how Netflix views women.

I watched most of it in fast forward. I guessed the government arrangement in episode one and was wondering when they'd just tell her. The handler was obvious. I guess they're waiting for a second season to go more into what abuse the grandmother went through and where she is now. Also, there should be a copy of the tape.
