Being a beginner is the tripod on the wall is to protect the rod from scratching on the wall? I always thought the tripods were to keep rods up when the beach. Never thought about taking the tripod whilst on a pier or anything like that. Went pier fishing a couple of times in Weymouth but had the rod resting on the metal rails but because I was float fishing for wrasse and pollack I mostly held it.

My trip to Newhaven early this month was lame. Because the tides were so weak, the crabs stripped the mackerel fillets off all my hooks. So cold that I couldn't be bothered to rebait for whiting that night. First time I blanked at that place, next time I'm going just after the peak of the spring tides, when the sea will be Nesquik brown.

That was a decent haul from Ramsgate pier, it usually fishes shit except for the odd decent Bass or Mullet

Here's a tip for you for when you fish off a wall or pier railing put a length of bicycle inner tube on your rod from the first eye to the join of the two rod half's this will stop the wall or rail from damaging the rod.

I can't help but think you're cold because of what you're wearing- or evidently not wearing below your waist. A pair of thick long socks with a pair of thick, long, traditionally white, fishermen's socks over those inside a pair of oversize wellies would take care of your feet. A pair of jeans with your fleece pants over those and you're good to go. It's all about layers. You might think you look a knob but at least you'll be a warm knob. :-)
