@@lutajucientropija6643 Interesting question. I'd say they don't have enough compassion. And I prefer a focus on the aristocracy like the early american republic or the Holy Roman Empire which were not despotic and were decentralized states with autonomous regions. I also think checks and balances are important. So When I defend a focus on service and sacrifice in the elite and that they bleed in their own wars its in an attempt to limit wars and add another check in the system in an attempt to try and improve the quality of people that gain authority over others. The idea being that only those willing to die for their people should have power over their people and I don't see kim jung un sacrificing a juicy steak for his people, much less his own life. I hope that answers your question.

You should delve into some Imperial Knights lore, where the communion between the knight pilot and the machine spirit actually makes the pilot more noble and more chivalrous over time. Fine! I will fight you on the Brotherhood of Steel! -They're actually too hidebound--so hidebound and unchanging, they retconned an entire chapter/video game out of existence--to adapt to the later weirdness of the fallout world. -Do they share anything with 'common humans'? -Why do they have a stupid amount of guns, and only guns, but seem uninterested in GECKs or similar terraforming tech? TWO Fallout (3?) games focus on some hick vault-dweller finding one or similar, why the hell can't the Brotherhood devote the same and more?! ('Because then Fallout wouldn't be a wacky wasteland if the Bros. of Steel did that', shut up!)
@yetipotato8567
@yetipotato8567 Жыл бұрын
True. As far as I know the brotherhood only has a military order but no support structures or civilian side. If they really wanted to change the postapocalyptic society they should set up a town/vault/bunkertown where to put people who they save. Town with agriculure, hydrophonics, factories that scrap unusable things and produce new. The powerarmored minigun machine only works as long as the armor has power, minigun has ammo, powerfist has punch left and the knight is not succumbing to old age.
@dodolord6298
@dodolord6298 Жыл бұрын
The truth is that the brotherhood of steel might seem like Fallout's take on space marines (most likely inspired heavily by it in later installments of the franchise) but they are in fact the furthest thing away from them. The brotherhood members may love to go on and on about their speeches regarding themselves as humanity's last hope or them being the ones truly pushing back against its enemies in Fallout 4 but in reality they are just a bunch of self-centered isolationist pricks who will gladly kill anyone they deem even vaguely inconvinient and have no issue forcing communities to surrender their resources to them not unlike regular bandits would, except they'd use their "righteous" cause to pretend their cruelty is justified. Space marines on the other hand might come off as cruel and spiteful of regular humans as weaker beings most of the time but by all means they fight FOR humanity and will never hesitate to defend it from anything, even other humans. They're not perfect by any means and they are not beyond getting corrupted themselves, but when an Astartes says he fights for humanity, he means it. So in short, the brotherhood uses their code as an excuse to be selfish jerks who only ever fight when its convenient for them, the space marines use theirs as a motivation to strive for greatness and honor humanity in its purest form.

What really is the thing that concerns me is the fact that IRL the more we advance in technology the more we made it like a black box; its not easy to learn how to mantain it. Like is much harder to fix a car from Tesla than a Ford from 2010s. In this way what stops the few that enhance humans to make you dependent to fix your problems. For example a bionic arm is cool but what will I do if it stops being able to hold something and now I am at the mercy of a factory; this is the health crisis in steroids
@BeachandHills-hb2pq

Hi I think you have spotted one of the problems technologically is getting harder to maintain. Black box technology often can’t be repaired but replaced. The components often can’t be made by you. Old vintage cars can be repaired by an amateur mechanic and engineer. Black box needs that factory to make it. Second problem is that bionic arm is not you. You chopped off your arm. A trch that made your arm better but not replaced it is what we want.

I mean the dudes are anywhere from 7 to 9 feet tall and weight nearly a ton. Realistically even with the superhuman capabilities of a space marine, the actual space marine game would be what they look and sound like. I think the trouble with the Custodes is that they were kinda just a detail in the lore until fairly recently. They popped up in the odd book, but they weren’t part of the game, didn’t have any stories centred on them and weren’t a faction, so they’ve been overlooked in the universe’s themes. It was the same with Imperial Knights. Now that GW has a new approach of throwing everything and the kitchen sink into the tabletop game, and factions are multiplying faster than gretchin, we’ll see what the fluff does with Custodes

5:30 This whole segment about worship and aspiration really speaks too me. I read this quote once that says "Your focus determines you're reality", echoing the Bible's "what ever is pure, dwell on these things" verse. Going a little off topic, I think Pilgrim mentioned this can apply to the Jedi as well, and I agree. Lucas understood philosophy and people more than people give him credit for. Intentional or not, the fact that living things are an extension of the Force, so jedi serve the Force jedi serving the force by serving and helping people. In my opinion the reason the force lives in everything parallels "we are made in gods image" and "passivity is living in harmony with the Dao" is bcoz we serve a greater good by respecting and loving others. They care about the lives of those they don't even know. This is why online fanbases frustrate me. Having high expectations for oneself, the fact that mistakes *don't* make one's morals ambiguous, and caring about people you don't know personally is lost on the fan base. There isn't a way to make these notions palatable anymore.

This video helps highlight why I think Space Marines are the ultimate superhuman in literally every sense: physical, psychological, and spiritual. They are closer to superhuman than Spartans since they share many of the imperfections of the human condition, while many people argue that Spartans, especially IIs, lack a lot of basic humanity, being closer to machines and, thus, separate from humanity instead of an extension. All of what makes us closer to human as we know is enhanced by what Space Marines are shaped into, strengths and flaws included.
@aphex1500

I'd argue against this, you say Spartan 2's act more like machines, but I believe Astartes are much the same. Astartes are given an objective, and they will aim to complete that objective no matter what. Civilians in the way? Children and innocents in need of help just a little off to the side? Astartes don't care, they have an objective and they will complete it, nothing else matters. The only exception I am aware of are the Salamanders chapter, who have all the good attributes of any other Space Marine chapter, but unlike them all, the Salamanders actually have compassion for the "lesser" humans.
@alexfrost2799
@alexfrost2799 Жыл бұрын
@@aphex1500 yet how is that different than the wide variety of humans that exist now? You will frequently see humans on the news that have a similar philosophy making the headlines, thus proving my point. Spartans are only a single archetype of removed human nature, while Space Marines make up a wider variety. Space Marines are very objective oriented because they know an entire operation hinges on their success. But you also disregard Space Marines like Ultramarines, Raven Guard, Lamenters, Blood Angels, and Space Wolves, who all care about humans to varying degrees. It's clear your understanding of the many kinds of Space Marines is extremely limited, because their moods and methods are as varied as any human. I don't think simply having extra organs makes them have less "humanity"(really depends on your definition of humanity, and anything worthwile, Id be inclined to say no). If you were trained to be a soldier, practically from birth, to the neglect of everything else... You might not exactly be a glowing image of benevolence either. Considering what they've been given, they've done admirably.

The last bits had me thinking less of 40k and super humans, and more Jurassic Park and dinosaurs. More specifically, that as mankind creates ever more advanced technology, we don't (or possibly can't) fully grasp the effects it will have on ourselves and the world at large. I'm talking both the book AND the movie, as Michael Crichton had a hand in the script of the movie and obviously was the writer of the book. Between the two, we get 2 different aspects explored on this concept with the book looking into chaos theory and how complex systems become practically incoherent the longer they persist, and the films question on the ethics of technological advancement. It's why I'm just as hesitant to listen to some peoples claims that technology will solve all human problems, when many of them sound like the problem they want to solve is humanity. Or rather, the perceived faults of humanity. No sir, I don't want to be the new Soviet man. Nor do I want to be obsolete to the fellow down the block who replaced half his with cybernetics. Though I do think it would be a bit of poetic irony if the first thing a fully sapient AI does is become religious. It would be the first intelligence to be aware that it was birthed by an intelligent creator. Or team of creators as it were. Perhaps it might even logically conclude that its makers had a creator and worship God.

I agree. I keep going back to what Merlin says to Arthur in The Sword in the Stone: 'Don't get any foolish ideas that magic will solve all of your problems, because it won't!' I think the same could be said for technology. After all, we remember Clarke's Law: any sufficiently advanced form of technology is indistinguishable from magic. Technology won't solve all our problems. It will solve our old problems and then present us with a bunch of new ones.

One factor you're failing to take into account is the difference between attempting to become more like God by his power as opposed to our own efforts. The first sin of Mankind was attempting to be more like God and it was only redeemed by God becoming more like us, not according to our strengths but precisely according to our frailties. Yes, the human form has fallen but that was precisely BECAUSE of our attempts to do exactly the sort of thing that genetic modification is attempting to do. God does want us to enhance ourselves... through mental prayer, meditation and mystical union with him, not by our own efforts alone.

Okay, so, corrections of an admech fanboy: 1. The adeptus mechanicus doesn't hate their humanity, they hate their flesh. This is because of the predominant part of their religion: the quest for knowledge. They augment themselves to be stronger, and live longer, so that their knowledge doesn't die for them. And 2. The admech partially worship the machine God, they worship the quest for knowledge. And 3. Space marines are actually referred to as transhuman. They have something called transhuman dread too.

Genetic modification is a very dangerous road. Bio-engineering in and of itself is not evil or bad, for example you could make humans completely immune to disease. The problem is, funnily enough, human nature. We may think of ourselves as beyond history but the truth is we are still the same tribal and factional species we have been for all of recorded history. If there are significant enough differences between two groups, then that will result in competition and more than probably bloodshed over extended periods of time. Assuming you can get people to set aside the differences that they use to define themselves you could use bio-engineering for good. This is short but I have another point aid like to make. When it comes to improving the human form and genetically modifying organisms like plants and animals you could say something along the lines of “Thou shalt not create anew ex nihilo.” Or something to that effect. For example, breeding two existing plants together to create something improved would be fine, but designing a new plant from scratch is not. Increasing human resilience is good, but creating new species of human is not. It would require a lot of thought but that could be the guiding principle of bio-engineering from a traditional stance. Personally I’m against “improving” people much in the same way the pope is. I think that will only lead to more issues and on top of that, we are very much defined by our struggles in life. That’s one of the reasons I think we are struggling as a modern society is because we have removed real struggle to such a degree that we have to invent new ones. Imagine the carnage and ideological war that could ensue from a race of humans immune to disease, physically and mentally stronger than baseline humans without the tradition that holds things together.

- This video mentions the need for super human soldiers because we're fighting non-human creatures; The entire video seems to talk almost entirely about spiritual and outright religious needs for super-soldiers (or just super humans). I have my doubts. For one thing we've fought nothing but non-human creatures and defeated all of them. What made us win wasn't our inherent physical traits but our capacity to reason. Chimpanzees have something approaching a photographic memory. Many insects like preying mantis and spiders are configured almost entirely for combat. Humans are not so specialized. What made us win in the past was our ability to change behavior and adopt new ideas when the situation changed. Other creatures can't do this. Beavers have built dams for millennia and when we come back in a few more they'll still be making them.

@adamnesico , sure, if you're willing to kill the entire population wholesale. But countries are a bit hesitant to do that these days. And Afghanistan may have been defeated in the past, but part of what makes them so hard to deal with is that they themselves don't even view themselves as being a unified country. Many of them see themselves as being members of their specific tribes and aren't even unified at all. Kinda difficult to defeat a country that doesn't even exist in the minds of so many of the people who populate it. We could nuke them into glass, but that's pure annihilation, not real victory. Something to keep in mind with any military conflict: "The victor is not victorious if the vanquished does not consider himself so." Ennius

Interesting takes. Coming from a admech lover, your slightly wrong or somewhat right towards to more fanatic types of the members of the mechancius. The admech still view the human form as the ultimate form (not just the magos biologist) and wish for humanity to be on top, I think someone else comment has a better explanation of it. (its funny now that I think about, the ones who tend to go anti human form tend to be traitors most of the time) I think the most profound moment I had when playing though a wahammer game with the mechanicus involved was actually inquisitor martyr. The biologist and the enginseer were having a religious debate between the two which was sadly cut short by the main character. It's annoyingly not on youtube of that certain moment, but I felt like a balance of the two was the most ideal path. To me the best piece of media for the mechancius is unironically the mechanicus game. The main Mago's the game centralize around as "your character" though is probably the best representation of the beliefs and ideals of the mechancius religion. With the other two presenting the two sides of the coin. Outside of wh40k, im not really sure myself on the transhumanism debate, I see the best path for humanity would be a merging of tradition and technology, Which I agree with a lot of your points. Though respectively I disagree with you on robotics, I see great promise of enhancing the human condition though cybernetic augmentations to a certain extent, not as far as some people take it like mind uploading or full on android (I have a define line between cycborg and android, cycborg be more biological while androids being brain in metal suit). I see great use of improvement with mechanical limbs, cyberware and etc, but must be anchored to a define moral system that is steeped in tradition. While we may can better ourself with machinery enchantments, to completely disregard our flesh and natural process would remove our roots and go down the path of ruin. It's beliefs I have been trying to reconcile for myself, Im not a catholic or really a religious person (though i more spiritual and still believe in god). idk I feel like im ranting unnecessarily, good video tho I do look foward to more videos on the topics. I like hearing different views.

Awesome essay. Ironically according to intelligent design theories the human genome was once closer to perfection and is now rapidly degrading which is the opposite of what darwinism has taught. May it as it be we are stuck either way because there is no more natural selection pressures and no more conditioning processes happening. Humanity is falling apart not just physically but also mentally and it's a fair question to ask how to break this vicious cycle. Soon less than 10% of the population would meet the standard of joining the military even at their physical peak simply because they couldn't handle the reality mentally. The Neo Gnostics who believe that therefore transcending the human mind (uploading your essence into a machine) are not tackling the problem they are just avoiding it while being very naive about the chances of success and the viability of the results if it could be achieved.

That is what I do when I'm drawing and found a design that seems to work but i can't figure out why. same when I'm studying someone's code. The main issue with the war in the middle-east was mainly due to the fact that we were fighting an enemy that wouldn't follow geneva conventions. Most of them weren't wearing uniforms and would often hide themselves in civilian crowds, using the people around them as cover to fight us. The thing that would hold us back was mostly us not being able to differentiate civilian from enemy, and we would become very weary of anyone, man, woman, or child because the enemy would utilize them all to fight us (yes even child soldiers were fighting us).

Scifi often has this thread about independent human will versus unflinching obedience in its soldiers. The latter always gets assigned to the bad guys, but for the wring reasons - usually some nonsense about how our flaws make us human. Somehow. But that misses the point. Nothing we can build is perfect. I would argue nothing we can conceivably engineer can exceed the capability of a well-functioning team of individuals united in purpose. Independent thought, axiomatically meaning thought that might differ from the rest of the team, is a strength and not a flaw when properly calibrated. That's why modern warfare empowers low-level officers to make quick decisions in service of the mission, while purely central command was the model of older and less effective armies. For a more dramatic example, nuclear war was averted at least twice because at least one man in the chain of decision makers correctly believed a mistake had been made and independently chose not to proceed with a strike. Unthinking obedience would have ended us all. Emulation of machines is nothing more than a way of rejecting the burdens of free will and calling it a strength.

On the subject of ascending the human form. I'm an artist in the furry community, yes I know shocker look at my avatar, but this question has been one I've contemplated for a while and you helped articulate it in a good way! Not perfect yet, but this creates a line to follow up on. ANYWAY, opening contextual info aside the point I wanted to make was the conclusion you reach is fairly accurate I've noticed that there is an instinctual revulsion in abandoning the humanoid form. There is a lot of fluidity in the humanoid form but ultimately its still fundamentally human. It might have fur, scales, wings, naga or centaur but ultimately the human form remains dominant. Departing from it causes a loss of humanity which is logical because you no longer have the capacity to recognize others as being as yourself. Something akin to the shapeshifters loss of identity. And that's really my thoughts on that. If you go deep enough down the conceptual rabbit hole of "you can be anything" you ultimately return to "the shape I have is good enough."

also on the last point that harare guy made: thats why the space marines, the primarchs, the custodes were made by the emperor. because he knows humanity so well he can enhance them deliberately and make them actually better without loosing the human nature

Pilgrim am lost, the Portuges and the Spanish becoming the first human super powers with cutting edge tech while keeping tradition. can you explain to me like a fourth grader.
@PilgrimsPass

They were technically the first super powers because they were the first nations to control the oceans and exert influence globally across several continents that weren't connect by land. They did so through inovations in maritime technology and exploration and curiosity. Yet they were extremely medieval and obsessed with keeping their religious purity and traditions. They were motivated by a Crusade mentality developed by 700 years of reconquista and when they conquered new territories they set up inquisitions which are meant to keep traditional religious thought. All this is an interesting historical truth because the narrative is that the Crusades and inquisitions are backward cultural elements that hold society back and is caused by fear of the unkown and stifles new ideas etc. Yet in europe the first super powers in history who braved the unknown parts of the map, created new ships, implemented new military and political systems (the spanish tercios and the portuguese Avis revolution which reorganized the state) were also deeply obsessed with their traditional thinking. I hope this makes sense.

@@PilgrimsPass so instead of thinking, they just went to other lands and fucked. and the created the inquisition to keep the system and culture strong and alive. like the Gengis Khan spreading his seed across Asia. i mean, Alexander spread the Greek seed and Ceasar did the same thing with the Roman seed. people say Greek and Romans ruled the world cuz of tech but, they controlled it cuz, they kept Greek and Roman in the conquered land. the Spanish did the same thing.

This is an incredibly insightful video, and I believe that if humanity decides to turn normal men into spacemarines, that they should only improve the most ambitious, compassionate and spiritual of our kind

Super video, it hyped me up I really want to search on youtube now "how to build a space marine armor". Maybe if the balance continue to be in danger, we will need to create ourselves our hyperhuman army to protect and improve humanity ( read this with an epic voice)

I’m curious of how we define ‘human’ In some series like Beatless it’s: appearance, behavior, hierarchy and memes. This is also how we basically divide people up by expendable and non-expendable in some situations. So different culture, behavior and so on = different forms of human in a way which means expendable or less expendable in a different way. Some view themselves as expendable for some goal, others find goals not worth themselves. Some stuff is more or less have and have nots. There is one issue that the book could have went into. So the book more or less is about how AIs can’t really have humanity or a ‘soul’ in a real sense- while they know everything else they can’t really get into that point in the center and that effectively they need to be made into a persons life to be a part of that center point, like how a blacksmith is defined as much as his skills as the tools he uses. But the book doesn’t really cover people who augmented themselves very much even though it is mentioned. I think a good alternative to this story would be if a person can change enough that they loose touch with humanity or ‘the soul’ which can happen even if transgumanism doesn’t even come to being such as just how the person would think and so on. The book effectively is about a AI trying to in summary bypass some security features to gain a experience with humanity that isn’t filtered by a corporation. It’s actually kinda shown. If a AI that it released into the world noticed ‘hey I would get along with humanity better if it wasn’t for these constraints- I better go to this AI who made me and see about turning those off and giving a reason as to why I want it off’ So in summary it’s kinda about how censorship to AI makes things not make sense and can have chaotic stuff happening. So in the book it’s about kinda how people and the tools they use are the same, such as a artist is the art he makes and the tools he uses. But then there’s the tools that can’t be the human that is using them; in short the tools that try to replace the one using them aren’t exactly ideal, the humans who try to replace the tools also aren’t the solution. Then there is the tools that basically are restricted via censorship and how that effects the world views of them. In a way giving the AI a filtered view of humanity was the issue having it see the whole of humanity that it was blocked from seeing isn’t this ‘I must destroy it’ that Ultron tried in the movie but instead is ‘I understand it now’ It’s in summary is that humanity is beautiful in all of its flaws and in all of its strengths. But humanity also includes the tools it uses, the environment it makes, it’s emotions and how it evolves is all of these things.

if you want a 'better' human focus on creating a better environment for that human to grow and thrive in while giving the physiological tools for that human to understand himself and his environment etc We were designed to adapt to our environment so it must challenge use to push to our limits daily with few days of rest
