Great episode!!! The Runabout model has a very Jeffries look about it, as if it could have flown right out of his sketches. The animation of the large ships was amazing as it captured the feel of large marine mammals battling for supremacy and emphasized the quick and darting movements of the Runabout. The use of the physical Runabout controls by the actor really sells the whole performance as she telegraphs experience, confidence, and ingenuity with the vehicle. Kirk Forever!!!

I like the premise. I'd like to see more exposition in future episodes of how a ship so small is able to take on top of the line capital ships is it warp capable? I would imagine it would need a sizable core to power weapons powerful enough to punch through d7 shields in just a few passes. I wouldn't think a simple fusion generator could do that. Is it a test bed for new shield technology also I just want to know more on the tech side of things not do much why but how it does what it does.
@gdavisohio3 жыл бұрын
GREAT comment!. I'd say that the Runabout has a power utilization curve that makes it possible for it to use 100% power for short duration.. Sort of like the Orion Pirate from the TOS episode "Elaan of Troyius". In this scenario.. the Runabout's was able to overcome the D7 so handily in part to the element of surprise and the extreme close range that she was able to bombard them with point blank shots. This enabled her to do damage to the D7 to give them pause and to call in reinforcements. We will delve a little more into the engineering of the Runabout USS RIO GRANDE.. She is indeed the test bed for all new technology for the class of Runabout. She'll remain NX for quite awhile and we'll show sister ships which will be NCC.
@generalgrievous6963 жыл бұрын
@@gdavisohio that makes sense with the Orion pirate analogy I look forward to seeing it more. using 100 percent power for a brief time makes sense. I wonder if prolonged use at a high level may run risks like the bugs they had to work out of the defiant class? flying close and strafing constantly reminds me of the ds9 mirror universe episode with the defiant and the mirror federation attack fighter attacking regent worfs mirror neg'var where the fighter flew close to the ship firing it's phasers and pulse cannons

@@generalgrievous696 YES!.. I had the same memory of that episode when I wrote the scene. I mean.. wow. that WAS a fighter, and it was shaking that Klingon Dreadnought up.. Plus.. Wow.. I had to look that reference up!.. In my opinion, the character doesn't fit that description. I appreciate, however, you giving me something to learn in that reference!.. When I wrote this, I just envisioned her a the typical Starfleet officer, one who refuses to give up and when bullied and knocked down, refused to just roll over and die.. She got up, brushed herself off, and fought back. I made her a female based on the song that I chose as the backdrop for the song. Again, thank you for teaching me something today!

Interesting subject matter. Need to turn your music down unless you were doing a music video. For a earlier Federation shuttle, it sure has a lot of fire energy to disable a full size D-7 with their shields full power.
@gdavisohio3 жыл бұрын
Yes.. it was our intention for this to be a music video. The song inspired the story.. This is not a shuttle, but the first generation of the craft we saw on Deep Space Nine, the Runabout. These are small but actual starships with a lot of power, range, and as we saw on the show, firepower. When the Runabout was able to get very close and limit the scope of targeting for the D-7, she was able to do some damage, but was no match for two D-7's. She needed help from the Starfleet Task Force that saw that she needed help...
@centaur1a3 жыл бұрын
@@gdavisohio you should see the original design of the shuttle ( Galileo 7) from Matt Jeffery. Has that round flat hull, pointy nose, and the warp engine on top edge of the wing like stucture. No reference for weapons placement.
@gdavisohio3 жыл бұрын
@@centaur1a Oh yes.. I have seen that, very cool stuff! Our Runabout has some similarities in shape of the exterior.. The Runabouts are not these short range shuttlecraft, though... They are in essence.. compact starships and would have weaponry. These craft were designed for longer missions, more power, and a variety of tasks that would otherwise be impractical for a "capital" ship. I was inspired by the DS9 Runabout which had phasers and photon torpedoes.

The set is on Alexa.. so I just said "Studio On".. it lit up and I shot.. teaches me to pick up shots on my LUNCH HOUR.. YES.. the Captain on the right sees that the original Klingon is trying to threaten them even though they turned tail and ran. The Captain reaches down and in "Minority Report" style, throws the transmission aside. The young lady who did that part works for me.. She said she'd bein the show. but didn't want to have a line. I through up this so she'd just not sitting there. She enjoyed doing that as much as I did editing it!.. When I have folks watch it.. @@anonymousperson3153 LOL.. Sorry that the song was distracting. However, the song is as much a part of the production as the character. @@andytay5507 Hmmm. Defiant was a big larger... This Rio Grande was intended to just be the TOS version of the Runabout we saw on DS9 and TNG. Small, compact, powerful .. capable of going to toe to toe with capital ships (within reason).. We saw Runabout and Peregrine Fighters go into battle during the Dominion War. The Runabouts are just meant to be small compact starships with longer range and the accommodations for crew for a longer mission than just going down to a planet from a regular starship. WAY could have done without the music. I had to stop watching due to the horrible song. Here's the thing with picking music for a production, if the choice isn't to the audiences liking, the rest of the production is pretty much a loss. In this case I'm sure there were plenty that liked the pop sensibility of the song. There were also a lot of folks that decidedly do not like that style of music, so it immediately turned them off the video. Its your project of course so go with your heart, but to appeal to a wide audience you might choose less genre specific music. Otherwise, probably a pretty good effort from what I saw but just couldn't stand the music so much I did not make it to the end.
@gdavisohio3 жыл бұрын
VERY sorry you didn't like the song.. I heard it just once and immediately was enamored by it. It drove the entire project. I wanted to do something "out of the box".. and a music video was DEFINATELY just that.. The lyrics tell the story of a struggle and overcoming it. That is what the story was all about.. Give us a second look once we put out our second production. It's going to be totally "traditional" and IN the box.
@KentonBenfield Жыл бұрын
I'm also someone who generally does not enjoy 'pop' music, and in fact I generally despise it; much prefer classical, orchestral and soundtrack, befitting dignity, sophistication and a more cerebral experience. It's why I really didn't approve of Enterprise's (the show) lyrical main theme, and the use of obnoxious rock music in Beyond. Having said that, I thought this here was well put together and made use of every aspect of the momentum of the song matched to the action. I got the vibe that the production crew here are just having fun with Star Trek and trying something different. For a short experimental work, it still wins me over, despite my preferences.
