PILOT | Control Room | Quill

My process for creating these sets takes forever BUT it looks wild in VR. This is one of those scenes that does not translate to 2D. It looks dark on video but in VR the mood feels right. There’s also a bunch of details you can’t see until you’re immersed in it.
I haven't seen a lot of VR narratives/games that are designed to be experienced 1:1 with your physical space. I know why…most people don't have access to a lot of space. However, I don't want to design Pilot around these limitations. I want to push VR. So I'm designing Pilot to be experienced as a 1:1 immersive narrative. This is directly inspired by Goro Fujita's "Last Oasis."
Stepping into a world you created and physically walking around it is a magical experience. Doing this the first time with my Quest, using Air Link, was one of those memorable Quill/VR moments that I will never forget.

@@mattschaeferdesign I'm really very new in this VR thing. I was so surprised by the quality of the OQ3 where I was skeptical of vr in the years before. But wandering around in the scenes you have created is really like magic. I was really surprised how different the experience is in VR vs screen animation. Thanks again for sharing these!

"It looks dark on video but in VR the mood feels right" I've also noticed this. Maybe there is a difference in color space and gamma correction between the VR panels and other displays or the color management is slightly buggy somewhere. Or maybe it's just because we have bright panels very close to our eyes in VR so we instinctively select darker colors in the color picker.

Yes, I think its partly bc we have screens close to our eyes. But also we're immersed in the "image." It takes our entire field of view. Kinda like looking at a dark room from a bright outside vs being IN the dark room. You adjust to the context. That's my guess.

is it possible to import rigged 3d characters, and animate them?

Quill doesn’t support rigs from other software but you can make your own pseudo rigs via folder and gimbal setups. This utilizes Quill’s keyframes which is fun to animate with since you can record your motion in real-time. Allows you to perform the anim. I’ve used that workflow a bunch to animate characters.
