The controller calmly saying, "You just fly that airplane all the way down and you'll be fine," brought the tears to my eyes. He must've known what a bad situation the pilot was in, but he didn't want to make the pilot any more scared than he surely was. The compassion of a stranger for another person in trouble. @dermick
@dermick Жыл бұрын
Totally agree - the controller's advice to "keep flying the airplane" is exactly what we need to hear during this final phase of every flight. That's what my primary instructor used to do during the approach and landing - he just kept repeating "fly ... fly ... fly ... " to remind me I'm the pilot, not a passenger. I still repeat this in my head. The final outcome of this flight was tragic, but the controller did the right things. If I had any advice for a controller, it would be to also remind the pilot to hold onto any altitude he had until he was over the airport, as Hoover mentioned.
@ItsAllAboutGuitar
@ItsAllAboutGuitar Жыл бұрын
@@dermick I agree, but the controllers aren't supposed to give such advice. I think the FAA should change that. Especially when you have controllers of this caliber. He was dialed in. I think the controller sensed "resignation" and encouraged him not to give up.

I'm wondering if large groves of trees might be a better option to "land" a disabled plane than most fields or roads (if in a . Its difficult to see all obstacles that could result in a lethal impact (power lines, pits or deep groves in fields, vehicles on roads). The top third of a large grouping of trees consists of a matrix of smaller branches that would slow the plane considerably before hitting larger branches further down. Biggest problem might be falling from quite a height (a good 100 foot rope on board to escape to ground)

As a 23,000 hour ATP in multiengine airplanes and helicopters and a retired airline pilot who was based in BNA and has extensive experience flying in that area in helicopters, twin turboprops, DC-9's and A-320's, this accident grabbed my attention and I felt completely immersed in the emergency. But the main reason for my commenting is to commend you on your professional, informed, level-headed critique of this accident and several others that I have watched. I am constantly frustrated and annoyed at less experienced but more critical "experts" giving their two cents worth that is rarely, if ever, worth two cents. You excel at not pointing fingers, being compassionate but accurate and informative, and I have yet to disagree with a single word you have said in any of your videos. As a flight instructor, I am always looking for a take-away from tragedies like this. A man died and we should look into alternatives of action that could have saved his life. First thing (and as a helicopter pilot I am very wary of engine issues...) that came to mind was: Why did he not immediately initiate a controlled off-airport landing while he still had some engine control and good altitude? By what I see, he would have had about 5-7 minutes just to set himself up correctly. My rule: If your engine is starting to run rough or if you are loosing power, always consider that a complete failure may be imminent and could happen any moment. Start looking for fields and tell the tower that you are looking for an emergency landing site. The problem is mindset: Once a controller gives you headings to an airfield and cleares you to land, your mind starts focussing on reaching this airport. This is wrong. Your mindset at this moment needs to be: Where do I land right NOW... This pilot tried to reach the airport and then was faced with an engine out situation on a long final in a descent at a lower altitude than necessary.. His mind then needed to switch to a complete new scenario within seconds. Please fellow pilots: If your engine starts to go rough and you are loosing power, initiate an off airport landing immediately. You still have power, so take your time, but focus on this task. If you are able to sort out the problem while doing so (Mixture, wrong tank), you can go ahead. If you can not fix the issue quickly, do a controlled and stable landing with a still working engine off-airport. NEVER wait for your engine to die on you, before you take action. RIP. This is no blaming, just my take-away.

I think you’re right. I’ve spent a lot of time flying single engine fixed wing and rotorcraft (MD500D). I moved to turbine rotorcraft because I felt much safer. I’d much rather be in a autorotation than super slick brick if an engine fails.
@Ozbird-72
@Ozbird-72 Жыл бұрын
@@RealRickCox 100 % agreed,,, But still it is about to make a decision... This guy did not... He followed procedures. If your engine is about to die, you have to make a clear decision: Land safely, no matter where... Brake the airframe, but walk away.

@DaveDepilot-KFRG Жыл бұрын
As a single engine piston pilot, I've never had an instructor suggest an off-airport landing while the engine was still running (or partially running). Like Hoover said, you just keep looking for a good place to land, and go as far as you can. But I'm not sure why he went down so fast from 5400 feet. His engine quit at about 3500 I think.
@Ozbird-72
@Ozbird-72 Жыл бұрын
@@DaveDepilot-KFRG Of course I talk from a rotary-wing perspective. I did not mean that you have to land right on the spot, but setting up a landing with a struggling airplane already is a challenge and needs time. Picking a spot, setting up an approach route, informing ATC etc. Of-airport landings. Being prepared is always better than being surprised at 3500 ft with no plan of action. If your engine recovers or if you fixed the issue, you can always about the emergency landing and continue to the next alternate.
@shable1436
@shable1436 Жыл бұрын
@@DaveDepilot-KFRGif you was a bush pilot you would be thinking the way this helo pilot said, limping back to an airport is the best way, but you need to consider going into populated areas is a very bad choice, there more obstructions. The guy made several bad decisions, especially glide rate, the field to the left of his crash site was longer. At every point after emergency, he should have been looking for a place to land, and getting it down ASAP, but flying over dense population is futile except interstate landing with traffic flow. My opinion he should have went to Murfreesboro strip and that way it's away from the city, and more options of fields between the airport and his plane

I pulled up on this accident about 5 minutes after it happened just as the first emergency responder showed up. The pilot missed an open field by FEET. There's not an abundance of good options for an energency landing in the surrounding area. This was during the morning commute and the backroads in that area are full of cars- the pilot is a hero IMO because he did everything in his power to keep others out of danger. Minute kudo to the controller for asking him how many PEOPLE were on board rather than how many SOULS were. "Souls" is traditional, but the controller knew asking him about souls would freak him out even more than he already was.
@arcanondrum6543
@arcanondrum6543 Жыл бұрын
I think that "souls" is so commonly used that it's well-known. "Souls" gives one an opportunity to say "Four. 3 adults, one child" or "2, myself and my dog". "Souls" says "all who are alive on-board matter" and certainly someone flying with their dog cares that that dog is found in the event of a crash.

Thank you for getting these stories out. These stories save lives. I lost my dad in a similar situation in 2003. He had ten of thousands of hours. He was a B26 pilot flying 44 missions in WWII. He had hundreds of sailplane hours too so forced landings were not out of his skill set. He lost a propeller blade in a high performance aircraft. He landed in a field. The touchdown was good but while sliding on the grass the plane dug into a hole. He was a great pilot. My mom survived. My mom said it was very loud with massive vibrations. She was a pilot too.

Such a tragic event. It tears me up to listen to these pilots knowing their outcome. If your engine quits you’re still flying an airplane. It’s just become a glider now and you still have to fly it to a landing. Condolences to the family and to the controller that did his best to keep things calm and controlled. I know it was probably a gut punch to know the pilot didn’t make it after coming so close. Thank you for not sharing his last words and showing such respect for his loved ones.

Even doing something like this in a modern real-looking simulator, like Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 (MSFS), and purposely doing something like this for practice/sim training and I dont even like doing that in the video game. Initially Microsoft made it for the military for training, i believe and i think it was the first computer assisted learning program/simulator of its kind. It just gives me that uncomfortable feeling in your stomach sometimes when you crash, even if you know its only a Game. I guess because of the crazy graphics especially on a Good PC and even more so with a VR Headset and it gets to feeling pretty real, pretty quick. When that water or ground is rapidly approaching up to windshield when flying in the true Cockpit view, its almost just like a natural reaction i feel like. A lot of times ill pause it before it happens because really no point, and its quick. But yeah.. Still gets me to this day, here and there, and i play it a lot.

Appreciate the analysis and the way you handled it. I've just started watching your videos recently, but every one I've seen is really well done, impeccably professional and rational, which is what piloting is all about. As a professional auto mechanic many decades ago, I could hear instantly from his radio transmissions that the engine already had a loud rod knock, and especially in an air-cooled engine, catastrophic engine failure is, at most, minutes away. The pilot was smart to declare the emergency right away as he did. Your 'leapfrogging' suggestion, constantly picking a landing spot nearby as you go even if the engine is still running, is spot on. The ATC was awesome; the kind of guy you want on the other end if in an emergency personally. This is an emotional one, because there's really nothing the pilot did wrong, and he still didn't make it. For me it's a reminder of just how dangerous flying can be,. and how impeccable we must be as the pilot, sometimes to an almost super-human level, in order to just make it out alive in some situations. In flight training, this exact type of situation is what concerned me most, as I knew it puts us in a position where we might not make it even if we make sound decisions. Blessings to this pilot and his family. He sounds like a good man, and I'm sure they miss him. I'm a little surprised that the NTSB didn't say more about the engine condition internally. Rust on the interior surface of all 6 cylinder walls indicates that the engine sat for a long time without being run, and with this rust the engine absolutely was not in running condition. High friction and/or binding of the piston from the rust could've caused the rod bearing failure. I wonder about the history of this engine in this plane prior to this fateful flight.
