Pilot's Eye View of Beechcraft Baron Flight

I flew our Beechcraft D55 Baron from Sacramento to French Valley (Temecula) with a cam behind my head. Here are the highlights of the flight - takeoff, cruise, descent, landing. If you haven't flown a Baron before it gives you a pretty good sense of the left-seat view. Pilots (and aspiring pilots) please enjoy!

Interesting is engine sinc. In my twin engined boats from over the years, I listened for the sound of both engines to become one harmonic sound via throttle rpm only...no manifold pressure adjustments for boats!

Most airplanes have prop governors which controls rpm. When I'm fiddling with the engine controls to get rid of sync noise, I'm adjusting one of the prop controls, not throttle (mp).

1flyride....I did want to demonstrate twin engine sinc...30 years ago, I had an 'arc' display module aboard one of my boats that recorded the magneto-coil output on a screen. When in sinc...the light remained as one. Interestingly, the sound pitch for a twin engined boat sounds very similar...but this cannot be...of course.

Hi... quick question.... upon take off you reduce manifold pressure before RPM... do I have it backwards? thanks...

Yes climb power is typically selected by reducing manifold pressure prior to RPM unless at high density altitude. This takeoff was at sea level. The only other unusual thing is that on this model Baron the location of the throttle and prop controls are reversed as compared with a typical light twin.

Does this twin have a prop synch instrument that tells you when one engine is not running at the same speed as the other engine ???????????

Yes, there is a synchroscope on the tach that shows differences in RPM, but you can hear it just as effectively. In a propeller-driven airplane, power is directly tied to RPM so the sound doesn't represent a meaningful difference in power delivery. During the cruise phase of flight, note that the props are synched. During takeoff or landing, it's irrelevant as the props are set to high RPM for maximum power availability, and any slight difference between the two has no impact on aircraft performance.
