Lt. Cmdr. Marc Fryman, one of the two F-18 pilots who lost their wings due to the low flyover, 0:12 graduated top of his class in flight school before serving two combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom, went back and served a third combat tour in Afghanistan despite losing his wings, and said he was "still proud to serve, even if on the ground."

It takes a lot of courage to do that.... I hope the Navy end up by treating Cmdr Fryman right. Anyone who takes their beating and comes out chastened, but uncomplaining, deserves props... I guess, unfortunately, whether he gets promoted - or ignored out of the Forces - will depend on whether or not his "face fits". Politics eh, don't you just love it ...

Per reddit post on what happened after the 2010 F18 flyover: seattlemadmax 8 days ago For people that come across this 11 years later (because youtube is boosting the video lately for some reason)(and maybe the OP will get this notification and 11 years of wondering will be solved). I did a little research tonight and found both the pilots online. Here's what happened: Pilot 1 (lead pilot of the formation) grounded in April 2010 and sent to desk jobs. In 2015, ran wargames for Naval War College Retired from Navy 2017 Six months later, became Delta 757 and 767 pilot In 2022, became Delta Instructor - still there. Pilot 2 grounded April 2010 and sent to desk job. Quit Navy with almost 13 years service in 2012 (obviously was in the Navy to be a pilot. No one quits at 13 years!) Became test pilot for NASA in 2012 and continues to this day. Navy made good on their promise to ground them permanently but FAA did not.

Permanently grounding the two naval pilots imho is a bit of overkill considering the time and cost to train the pilots, who I believe were very distinguished in their service. Putting them on probation or extending the time needed to be awarded the next rank would be a strong enough signal to them and others who might think about flaunting some regulation.

I looked into this a few weeks ago, they never flew a navy jet again. But both still finished their duty and bounced back. One is a nasa test pilot and the other trains pilots for delta. The landing gear out, so the planes would scream louder as well as the obvious lie about the altimeter is what ultimately cooked their gooses.

Back in the late 70's, two F-106s flew low over several Montana towns for the 4th of July. One pass was so low that one F-106 hit a grain elevator (about a 100 ft tall) and crashed in the main street, killing the pilot. Fortunately, the street was cleared of a parade that took place just minutes earlier.

Thats unfortunent guess he learned the hard way. Being that low in a civilian population isn't allowed. Except in an Air Show over the Air field, with a preplanned route. There are very strict rules. 100 feet though is just to low for such a place. In this video they were pretty close to the top of the building thats probably why they were reprimanded. Usually these flyovers are not an issue as long as the predetermined floor (hard deck) isn't broken. I guess these guys were just a tad lower than what they were told to be. Thats my guess.

I think the C17 is one of the few, if any other, planes that still does a reverse thrust maneuver to back up. But, years ago in the early days of jet travel, it was not uncommon for planes to use their reverse thrusters to back out of gates. (before tugs became the tool to do that).
@slimjim1125
@slimjim1125 10 ай бұрын
It was purely down to a fuel saving exercise. The fuel burned during reversing manouvers was too much according to the bean counters, so that's why tugs are used for push-backs. That and a mild safety point, since the pilots couldn't clearly see what was behind them & would have been relying on a marshaller.

The Voyager restaurant (named for the Voyager round-the-world aircraft) started to build an outdoor dining area by the taxiway, but I accidentally killed the project when I asked, "What are you gonna call it- the FOD Farm?" But really folks, setting up an al fresco dining area in a location known for frequent HURRICANE FORCE winds was a forlorn hope.

I can't believe people are saying it was "overkill" to ground those pilots. If something went wrong that's what, over 40,000 people dead? Regulations are written in blood. And they definitely knew the rules, so at the least it was a dumb thing to do, at the worst criminally negligent. They probably consider themselves lucky that grounding was all they received. And I'm sure if they're needed in combat in the future, they'll probably be given the opportunity to make things up. People have short memories during wartime.

First one reminds me of our police helicopter pilots who always wish to do things not permitted like land in tight spots, because most of them are ex air force and have amazing control over the aircraft I suppose. I know people that have been in there and they say those pilots can make it feel like your on solid ground even on a windy day.

Air force pilots are disciplined, follow orders and don't put citizens in danger. These pilots deliberately and recklessly disregarded the very basics. They'll have to prove their discipline and flightworthiness before they're trusted with anything that flies again.

That's not low ... I was at a range control radio relay when 'Coach' a departing Marine Aviator 'went 108' (108 is a flight violation for 'too close to ground') at the end of his flight test assignment and THAT WAS LOW!!! He came up the valley and we were looking at the top of his F/A-18 D which was in ground effect 20' above the sand, not the bushes - behind was this giant mess of desert twigs and sand. We were at a radio shack with a generator and a 12' chain-link fence with razor wire coils on top and i really thought he would snag those wires but i just stood there on the picnic table with my palms pressed into my ears and the biggest grin!!! We got COVERED with sand, twigs and fuel it all stuck because we were very hot and sweaty. ... craziest thing is you can't hear it approaching so you can talk - but you just know it's going to be DANG LOUD.

I'm shocked that the Navy pilots lost their wings. Surely they had a review board? The Navy spends so much on these guys that they're loathe to part ways with them. I can see a temporary suspension, or probationary period, but I find it surprising that they were permanently grounded.
