SunSun HW-3000 (Amazon UK): geni.us/KUj29RU SunSun HW-3000 Ebay UK): ebay.to/2w2mwBX This is a well made 'budget' filter with integrated UV clarifier and it will hold well over 5kg of media and has a variable flow rate. Biohome products and foams: www.filterpro.co.uk Biohome Ultimate on Amazon UK: geni.us/GDV8oLd FilterPro site has links to worldwide distributors. WHAT IS A FULL CYCLE? *If someone tells you the aquarium nitrogen cycle ends with the production of nitrate that is incorrect - please read on* A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere. Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios: (1 US gallon = 3.8 litres) (1kg = 2.2 lbs) Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat. Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'. This series of videos is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on: sales@filterpro.co.uk 07772848730 (Richard) Anyone who sends a filter (UK only at present) will have it upgraded and returned to them for free and the only cost you will pay is how much it costs to ship it to me - I'm helping to boost your filter and the resulting videos will hopefully be useful to viewers all over the world so it's a win/win. I have this pump, teamed up with an FX6 on my 180 g. The Sun-Sun holds a crapload of media and has a great flow rate. Great filter for the price. Just like all Sun-Sun filters, the plastic is kind of cheap so you must treat it gently but she runs like a champ.

Just a point when you reduce the outlet, but keep the pump high, you increase pressure coming out the outlets. This can speed up the exit speed of the water if you want to blow some currents around your tank 👍 lucky guy getting all that media !

Has some nice updates over the older 704, 404, 304. The valve block had two o rings per side vs 1 on older models, independent shutoff levers on each side, the pump head no longer has a prime button, those are leaks waiting to happen, the pump head is thinner and the unit can fit in slightly smaller cabinet heights and obviously the ability to slow the pump electronicly and the UV timer is a huge plus.

Keep in mind that it is 3000L/h at 0 head pressure and without media in the trays! The further below the outlet you put it, the harder the impeller has to work to push the water through the pipes. This also means it will be a bit slower. Still a great filter for a decent sized tank.

This is definitely a nice filter for the price. I'm using it on a 75 US gallon tank, and only run it at level 4 with a custom spray bar that runs the length of the tank. The tank houses rainbow fish, empire gudgeons, pearl gouramis, guppies (lol), Siamese algae eaters, and panda garras. I'm using the surface skimmer and I've noticed that it's very easy for the skimmer to pull in air causing the filter to constantly burp, which has led me to contemplate using the straight intake without the skimmer and purchasing a separate skimmer pump. One thing I did notice about it is that the gallons per hour does drop once it's filled...but that isn't unique to this filter. Any canister will drop once it's full of foams and media. Set it up exactly as you recommend. :)

Love your videos and information Richard. Keep up the good work! Running this filter for 2-weeks now on a new 90-gal saltwater. Ditched the ugly SunSun Skimmer attachment. Have the HW-3000 on one end of the tank with layered Course foam-Medium foam-Polyfiber, then two trays holding 3.5 kilos of media, then Fine foam-Polyfiber in the top tray. Effective flow rate is roughly 50% of rated with 1-meter head height (it's a TALL tank). On opposite end I installed a SeaChem Tidal-110 HOB to handle skimming and more fine mechanical. Combined flow rate of both filters is roughly 800 gph which is a fairly gentle flow in such a tall 90-gal tank.

Having had two sun suns I have had to replace the baskets due to the UV light if excessively used will deteriorate the plastic spiral to the point of bypassing the mechanical filtration in the bottom tray
@eisenklad4 жыл бұрын
unavoidable.. some brands break down slower, others faster this is why people prefer having a seperate inline UV sterilizer, that way they can either just bypass the UV when its not in use or when it needs a new bulb. i wish higher end filters on some brands have the non-UV variants but its how they are justifying the "premium" price for a bigger filter. Pre-filters are cheap after all... so a bigger filter without UV will just mean less clutter. but the Controllable DC pump is a nice feature.. wish it was a feature that trickles down to cheaper filters
@varanidguy4 жыл бұрын
That can definitely be a problem when running the UV. I personally haven't found using UV necessary unless you get a bloom of cloudy water with bacteria or green algae. I have this same filter on a 75 US gallon tank and it keeps the water crystal clear without the use of UV or chemical filtration.
@petenewell53776 ай бұрын
The filter is designed to have bio / coarse filtration at the bottom and polishing pad at the top. The "thick" O-ring is prone to failure and must be lubed and the head carefully refitted on service or you will have a flood. There is no way of actually knowing if the UV id working . lamp failed.

Just for anyone watching this for install help. In the video you can see at 1:17 that the intake and outtake are attached incorrectly. Still works this way but on the outside of the tank, those 2 screws are meant to go in the little piece with 2 holes that he has on the inside of the tank. It slides on that L bracket that he has on the inside. Just an FYI.
@jackhorton36902 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too. You slide them back to touch the screw heads and that gives you more distributed load pressing against the glass, instead of a pin-point load of the end of the screws touching the glass. Makes it more sturdy.

Hi, I’ve been searching for a pre-filter to use with my HW-3000. My understanding is that the 603 pre-filter requires a reducer for the inlet hose, reducing flow and straining the motor. I’ve stumbled upon the EW-604B which has a larger volume and fittings. Currently, it’s not available in a 120V version but I’m thinking this would be the most suitable pre-filter. Have you seen this one yet? Any chance you could do a video testing that with along with a 704B or HW-3000? Love your content and I’m also a proud Biohome Ultimate user! :-)

I've got two 604 prefilters. The fittings are exactly the same as the other prefilters so will still reduce the flow.

@dirtramper2124 жыл бұрын
The EF-2 apparently does have the 18mm fittings, so I may go with that.. but a 604 with 18mm fittings would be the cats ass. I’ve looked for the replacement valves/fittings to upsize with and only can find them in 12 and 16mm.
@benmillns89764 жыл бұрын
All the prefilters have the same fittings. They unscrew to reveal smaller fittings, so either way you'll be hugely restricting the flow.
@dirtramper2124 жыл бұрын
Ben, how do you have the 604s setup.. as a primary filter on a small tank or secondary with a canister? I think a secondary with easy access to sponges and opening the canister loaded with bio media less often would be nice. Do you think that’s a pipe dream or would it be worth giving up a fraction of the flow? (it would certainly depend on the % of flow loss)

Hello Richard, I am starting setup on a new 125g aquarium for African Cichlids and I have purchased 4kg of the Biohome ultimate to be divided between two SunSun 704B canister filters. I also have about 3kg of some good quality ceramic rings with a high porosity and a bag of nylon pot scrubbers. I bought some fine/medium/course filter sponges for the 704B but they are flat and do not have the egg-crate pattern. So now for my questions: 1. Will the 4kg of Biohome Ultimate along with the rest of the filter media be enough? 2. The sponges I bought are smooth on both sides and do not have the egg crate pattern; Should I replace them with the other type? 3. I'm considering this filter, as I love the amount of media it holds, and the fact that I can turn the flow down for better anaerobic colonization. My concern is the size of the hoses seems to be too big to install the prefilter. I had to change out the input lines on my 704 b in order to attach the prefilter, and that was not only a chore but I 'm constantly worrying about whether the new hoses are going to randomly pop off. Did you say these are 1 inch pipes, and would you advise trying to install a prefilter? Is there another prefilter available somewhere that has bigger nozzles?

Hi we’re would chemical media go please ? Regards
@pondguru Жыл бұрын
In any system chemical media would go last as the filtration process would always run in this order: Mechanical to Biological to Chemical.

Do you see a benefit to adding a sunsun 603 prefilter canister to this filter. I have found that the fittings on the 603 are on 1/2 and the fittings and tubing on the hw-3000 is 3/4 so it will reduce the flow of the 3000 when you have to modify it to connect them together. I was told that you could get valves for the 603 that will accept a 3/4 inch hose but i can not find them.

I don't have experience of the 1000 unfortunately so that is something I can't comment on other than to say it looks like a decent filter and gets good feedback from owners in the US.

I am going to be using a allpondsolutions external filter booster for mechanical filtration & fill the canister filter with biohome ultimate. I currently have a Fluval 407. Would u recommend changing to the SunSun HW-3000? As it will be able to hold more media & has a higher flow rate
@pondguru Жыл бұрын
Everything is sized to the stock in the tank and without knowing that I'm guessing but one thing for sure is that you can never have too much filtration on any tank but it's easy to have filtration which isn't up to the job. We'd recommend 1kg of media per 100 litres for a normally stocked tank and 2kg of media for a heavily stocked tank. If you'r filter is doing the job (of achieving a full cycle) then there is no need to change it.
@tkpricey Жыл бұрын
@@pondguru Cool. Thank you for your help. I think I will change over as tank is going to be heavily stocked and the higher flow rate is a plus

Is a surface skimmer necessary on a freshwater tank or is it mainly for marine?
@ThousandYardStare Жыл бұрын
You can use them on both fresh and marine but it is more important for marine to strip the protein out of the water so that the water surface(meniscus) is as thin a possible for best gaseous exchange between water and air.

UV should really be after all other filtering stages are done, not from initial input with the dirtiest water
@UncalBertExcretes4 жыл бұрын
UV folicates fine particals that would otherwise pass thru your media & sticks them together to make a bigger partical that will be filtered out. So UV first is a must, its not just for killing algae and bacteria.

Quick question. Doesn't the UV light kill the bacteria?
@pondguru Жыл бұрын
Yes as the water passes over it it will kill bacteria but the light doesn't shine onto the media which holds the vast majority of the bacteria in the system.

Running a 9watt uv is pointless in this filter unless flows turned right down only run 2hours per week save baskets from melting or better yet buy the eheim reflex and add canister to that so it's not in with the bio media
