I was doing one lesson per day with Pimsleur and found my retention was SOOOOO much better if I did the same lesson daily, but for 3-5 days in a row, then advance to the next lesson. It cements the material in your head. I don’t think one time is enough. My personal opinion. 👍

it would have been nice for you to talk about the fluency you have personally gained from pimsluer
@adventurepantsmcgee3 жыл бұрын
Too true, and because I didn't, I'll talk about it here: I think it would be very difficulty to gain any kind of fluency without practice. Pimsleur allowed me to practice daily. I would repeat phrases to myself that either gave me a hard time, or that I liked how they sounded (which allowed even more practice). I have a Spanish tutor that I speak with regularly, and would try out the phrases that I learned from Pimsleur there too. Because I was utilizing multiple tools (Pimsleur, tutor, KZbin, Netflix), I find it tough to distinguish which one has helped "the most". They all kind of work hand-in-hand but getting that first exposure to that many phrases was so helpful. That being said, if I had just done Pimsleur, and nothing else, I doubt that I would be as fluent as I currently am. In addition, Pimsleur gave me more confidence to use the phrases it teaches just because speaking them out loud multiple times, even if just to myself, helped me hear the difference between a native's accent and mine. I hope this helps, Holly! Please let me know if I can clear up anything else, and good luck on your language learning journey!

Thanks, Thomas! Pimsleur has a guidebook for reading practice, but as for additional reading, I picked up my favorite book but the Spanish version (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6Tch6WwetemZtk). It was really difficult because I wasn't yet very familiar with the tense the book was written in, so I would probably choose a children's book with chapters. I'm currently reading the Animorphs in Spanish, which I read as a teenager, and even that is challenging. That being said, even if I don't understand something completely, I'm able to understand enough to follow the story with context. I hope this helps!! 💚

I'm doing the Pimsleur Spanish course right now and I'm about to end the first chapter. It's an older version but it works the same. I have a lot of available time while doing home improvement and I also use it while doing chores in the house. However, I do not do the recommended one lesson a day because it's just not enough repetition for me and I don't care what they say. Instead I do about 5 or 6 lessons a day. For instance, lesson 11 to 16, and then the next day I start at lesson 12, and the next day at 13. So I repeat each lesson 5 or 6 times. I started Pimsleur after only learning Spanish with Dualingo (on the website *not* the app) and any material I could find on KZbin. In the beginning I found it to be extremely challenging to start talking even though the Spanish in the first lesson was extremely basic. But I started to realize that Pimsleur gets you to use parts in your brain related to actual speech. Yesterday while doing the dishes I said to the dinner plates: "Todos nuestros amigos están enfermos. ¿Conoce a un buen médico?". 😆

3 months into learning Spanish - Unit 1 Lesson 25 - I'm more excited than ever to advance in the lessons. For me what Pimsleur has done is create a framework of how to use sentence structure and I'm only on Unit 1. I would definitely say listening to Spanish music or movies and definitely having spanish speaking friends around you to practice enhances the lessons and makes you HAVE to step outside of what you've learned and apply. So, you need to apply it, which means; speak it! (also - I don't listen to 1 lesson per day - when I have to go back to Lesson 2 - I listen as often as I can while doing life/walking/etc, but I'll only do the new lesson max 2x/day if it was a hard one)

For Spanish, I was playing them once a day. But if time passed between lessons (like it had been a few days / weeks / months), then I would do the lesson again. Some languages may be "easier" than others to understand. Spanish, I feel like, was _relatively_ easy as far as pronunciation is concerned. However, I'm currently working on Portuguese, and I will rewind several times throughout the lesson because of the pronunciation, and the phrases are very fast (for me). So I think it's more that I'm repeating several parts within the lesson (many times), rather than repeating the entire lesson. I am curious though - what language are you listening to?

There is redundancy, but if you do like the method, then that would be just solidifying what you learned and learn some new words specialized with Spain and conjugating verbs that use Vosotros. The familar plural form. I actually intend on doing this myself.

I know how to ask for the toilet in at least six languages…very useful….😂 but I really only speak four of those languages…😊

Pimsluer will not get you fluent, in fact far from it. It is however a great resource, gives you a very good base to practice other methods of learning.

LOL Thanks, I think? 😂 I really enjoyed using Pimsleur. It was really helpful, for me, so I hope this overview gives some information about what to expect. 💚
