this is by far the best language learning program ive ever used. I did a few lessons and stopped for like 6 months but i still remembered everything i was taught for the first time trying to learn a language.

@Unapologetic Nicole what app? Pimsleur is audio, and for example, spanish has about 150 lessons .. it works, but personally, I use it. Then I stop for months, but after the first 60 lessons, iv already used spanish every day at work and learned random slang or words

I fully agree with this review! For me, these cons actually make Pimsleur perfect for me. I already learned grammar, reading and writing in high school/college. I want to enhance my listening and speaking skills, as I can read Spanish well but have problems understanding it when spoken.

This was my problem with Duolingo. No matter how much I learned and advanced, I never felt confident in conversation. I couldn't think of the words I wanted or how to form them into different sentences.

My problem with using Pimsleur was that I originally tried using it while sitting in a chair and following along, and was incredibly bored. Now I go for daily bike rides/walks and listen and it's so much more enjoyable while doing something else.

I love Pimsler, great review. It does get boring at times but I have alot of interest in the language I'm learning and that keeps me going. You have to love what you do. I just retain more using this app myself than with others. I also have language books I learn from as well.

I have been using Pimsleur for years and your review is spot on. Regarding Busuu, I tried their French for six months, and for me, it was not very effective. I've been using Speakly now for about the same amount of time and find it more engaging with better results.

Pimsleur is useful but it assumes you are about to be a tourist and going out on lots of dates. I use a combo of Pimsleur & Mondly and other avenues.
@quantus5875Ай бұрын
I agree with you -- about half of the content is travel and going to the doctor, the store, restaurants, renting a car, going to an art gallery, etc -- but the last 40 percent has some pretty advanced dialogues talking about past accomplishments, your dreams and aspirations, your career, family problems... What it's really doing is building the basics through spaced repetition -- and those building blocks you learn to put together in countless ways. To your point you really do have to build up your vocab in other ways -- but I feel like I had a really rock solid command of simple grammar and speaking (especially present and simple past tenses) after completely Pimsleur. Like you I'm now using input-based learning again mainly reading and listening to keep improving.
@jasensargent22454 ай бұрын
Only boring when you TRY to memorize the vocabulary. I've realized with language learning, especially with a program like pimsleur, your not supposed to be interacting with the language trying too hard to memorize words but rather allow yourself to take the wonderful journey into a new world of a new language to speak to people you couldn't before. So if you follow along with that in mind it actually can be very fun and enjoyable and you will WANT to talk out loud.

So how do you use both? One after the other or at the same time? I am a native English speaker with no knowledge of french.
@evaguerrero49643 ай бұрын
Now it has gamification, plus it has reading and writing exercises. I think in learning depends on how invested you are in learning the language, and how you take advantage of your resources. I do transliterations that helps me practice pronoun I atinó and at the same time I memorize the vocab. I also use the gamification and do all the reading exercises by writing the words.. although it’s basic it is a good start and helps you discipline for language learning.

One thing to mention is that all the courses are in English with the exception of Learning English courses for other languages. If you're not a native speaker it leads to a situation where you're learning a foreign language through the lens of another foreign language, so you need solid grasp of English first...
@quantus5875Ай бұрын
Yes, good point. I'm a native English speaker -- so never think of it that way -- but you are 100% correct. I've got to assume that for example in France there might be a company that creates courses for native French speakers? And that other countries do the same? But maybe I'm wrong. I do know that content for learning English is insane (in many countries) -- since it is the most popular secondary language to learn. Demand unfortunately drives the availability of learning content.
@edim108Ай бұрын
@@quantus5875 there are, but depending on the country the choices might be limited. Pretty much every language on earth has a course in English, but good luck finding a Navajo course in Polish...

I have a degree in linguistics. I think we learn as kids to speak a language by hearing it and repeating it. The brain seems to work that way. We generally didn't go around as kids writing words down as adults talked to us. So when someone says a negative of this method is not writing, I say ok, but I am willing to accept that.
