Actually, if you put a stag beetle on your hand or arm, it just sits there and doesn't do anything. I love to lightly press down on their backs with my finger; they push up against your push. But be careful when you lift them up, so you don't hurt the hooks on their feet.

I once held a stag beetle at some pet convention, specifically a Dorcus Titanus. This little guy is aggressive! As soon as he's placed on my hand, it nipped on my fingers with its mandibles. Twice. It stopped and calmed down when I kept my hand still, like another tree branch. Im not complaning. In fact, Im amazed by the strength the stag beetle has. As for the pain, it was a bit sharp, but tolerable and it went away within seconds.
