I am very excited for the Pine note. From what I understand, many e-reader tablets don't have great software, instead it is something restrictive and tailor-made or more open like Android but which feels out of place. I really consider getting one.

I own several kindles and a few kobos and I can confirm: if you find something, then with luck something where someone just tinkered around and it's a debian install which is completely barebone.... the kindles are extemely locked down. on the other hand you can get them cheap second hand and there is a big jailbreaking community the kobos - if you are lucky - have an sd card instead of soldered on memory - so you can just use it like a raspberry pi. But like I said: nobody ever Programmed anything big on it. also the kobos just kind of suck hardware wise - especially the infrared touchscreen. (I have two kobo touches and a kobo mini)

The bug in plasma-mobile, where simple settings, like a wifi connection are not remembered after reboot, really need urgent fixing to improve usability... I cannot code myself, but would be willing to support anyone who'd consider fixing this annoyance.

I love what does Pine64, but as for the Pinebook, the only obstacle of purchase (for me) is the qwerty keyboard only -_-
@niccoloveslinux3 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest learning your layout by hearth, so you can use any keyboard without issue... as an example, I use DVORAK, but I'd never expect a PC to actually ship with that

I want a PineTab for running with linux, but the specs just don't do it. 2 gigs of RAM don't do it for me, also 32 gigs on a daily driver is just unusable. I wanted it so bad as the Surface pro 4 will be my first tablet running Linux but I'm scared as the process looks very long and hard.

KDE should focus on developing software, not laptops. The big bezels look ugly, its much better to buy Dell Inspiron 7000 in aluminium chassis with a nice screen and install KDE on it. 2GB RAM is a joke in 2021 even for a phone or tablet. Pinephone should get the same components like powerfull flagship phone (Samsung, Oneplus) with a lot of RAM and good CPU and give user absolute control of his phone. Samsung introduced a "feature" which disables your camera if you unlock bootloader and trie to install different software. So Pinephone needs to have the power of flagship phones and freedom of Linux. This will be a formula to success.

The problem is the proprietary code on those processors. The core philosophy of Pine64 is open source even down to processor binaries.
