I know the feeling of a recall (comeback). I was in the electronic service industry for 40 years. You eventually feel "married" to those repairs and when the phone rings, you hope it's not a recall. Most customers don't understand that they didn't pay for a warranty for the entire car, just the repair you did.

You just have to get good at communicating all those things before you start. If you set up all the right expectations, then everything that comes at you is already accounted for and the customer knows that it could happen. Communication is a huge part of it.

Great work as usual Ivan. I carried out a repair on one of my main customers cars last week and got the call at 7pm that the engine light was back on. I asked him to please bring it back in the morning for another check over. He decided that it must be faulty workmanship, so withheld $500 of payment without bringing the car back. This caused me a lot of stress over the weekend as I need the money to pay my suppliers. I politely called the guy and said I was upset that he would assume he knows more than my 41 years experience has given me. He agreed and paid straight away, for which I felt lucky, but I shouldn't have to go through that crap. No more credit for that customer.

I got shafted when customers didn't pay for the part. Twice Twice bitten..that's when I said. Nope I'm not buying parts. Then I got shafted on my labour rate. The customer started complaining about not having enough money to pay for my service. I knew her father very well. So I told him. They paid their tab finally. I told the father. I will not work on their vehicles at all.

I'm unsure as he hasn't been back yet. He stated that the light went out the next day and stayed out. Originally it came in on a tow truck with flat battery and the alternator had failed due to excessive oil leaking from a valve cover gasket. So I quoted on the phone, got the go-ahead & repaired all that, charge rate 14.4v, 3 mile test run - all good. I explained that the charging system had to be efficient before I could expect to gain any accurate data regarding any other potential issues the vehicle may have. It's the withholding payment part that upset me. I'm not as good as you at electronic diagnosis, but I'm very fair and polite. It's nice to get treated the same way, which the vast majority of people do. Surely you get the bad ones too...

I've had good luck using a smoke tester into the spark plug hole for 'leak down' check. Even at only about 3 psi, I can give it a couple of minutes then check throttle plate, tail pipe and dipstick for visual conformation. Just easier for me than 'listening'.

Even easier visual for tech and customer is keep a box of 1 gallon sandwich bags that use wire ties, NOT Ziplock. Take rubber bands and place 1 on tailpipe (or 2 for dual pipes, etc.), 1 on engine dipstick tube or oil filler tube, and 1 on throttle body inlet. Now connect shop air to suspicious cylinder and see which bag fills up first 😁👍.

Nice job, Ivan. Nothing worse than that sinking feeling of a comeback. You are correct about the cross part numbers on Rock Auto, great resource. I tend to use a super thin layer of Permatex Anaerobic sealer when reusing old gaskets that look good, but I want to keep from clogging things like RTV does. Seems replacing all the coils with some age has become a maintenance item anymore. Seems there are always an instance of shoulda coulda wouldas, but if you'd done that it would have been something else. I think you did right, doing the least possible to help out a good customer and keeping costs down and keeping him on the road.

Ivan Temnykh, I don't know what to do with you! First, you tear apart the engine and replace valves. Then, you get the car running and discover piston ring blowby. Then the customer COMES BACK again and you have to perform "swaptronics" to find a bad ignition coil; and all problems associated with trying to find the right coil. Then you replace the coil with good results. Then the customer comes back 1 month later and you discover a variable timing solenoid leaking; and you replace that. On top of all of this you ARE NOT getting paid as you stated. In the past, you have said in some instances, "Please don't bring it back." You must really want to help this guy. " Its too short" is not something you want to hear especially if its a female! Seriously, from personal experience, to check for valve seal after cylinder head is removed, is to lay head horizontally and pour solvent into intake/exhaust port and check amount of seepage from valve head. Experience will tell you what is excessive. When doing leak down check, from a lit cigarette, blow smoke into hose screwed into spark hole, before attaching air pressure, will help in finding air leak.

My 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine uses a bit over a quart (1 litre) in 10,000 kilometres (6000 miles) & it has done almost 389,000 kilometres (almost 242,000 miles). If you remove the oil filler cap whilst the engine is running then stick an A4 sheet of paper over the opening & it doesn't push it off then it has no blowby,if it does,it has. Also, the new valves might take a while to seal off fully,I know that when my dad had an engine rebuilt as new it needed a valve lash adjustment about 1000 kilometres after it was rebuilt. It's a bit like when the piston rings seat into the cylinder walls in a rebuilt engine, the compression will be lower until the piston rings bed into the cylinder walls !

I understand that this was a budget job and corners are being cut to save money. And sometimes these jobs end up haunting us. But anyway, that is very common for those coils to start burning out after around the ten year mark. I don't know if it's planned obsolescence or just the excessive heat baking them under that coil cover. But the dealer that I used to work for would keep dozens of those coils in stock. We would plow through that stock pretty fast sometimes. Overall, you did a great job Ivan. You granted that Volvo extended play time. LOL.

Amazing how many have Monday morning quarterbacking skills and responded "I would have replaced all 4 valves". Yet they failed to hear you state at the beginning of the head work "This is a budget job. ..I don't care what the manual says." The owner is lucky the engine didn't disintegrate 50k miles ago. Now he stands a good chance of getting another 50k. Let's just hope he pays you that promised $100 per month. 🙂

8:15 mark..they sell, especially at swimming pool stores, black rubber corks( or plugs) That have a threaded shraeder valve that can be inserted into a pipe and tightened using a wing nut to tighten the plug. I use them to blow water out of the swimming pool lines to prevent freeze damage over the winter. Stick one in the exhaust during leak down testinh, you could use a guage on the shraeder valve.

Mustie1 is the guru of performing absolute minimal repairs to get an engine running acceptably. As for me, I would have sent that head to the local cylinder head rebuilder, and let them have at it.

@@bcad4066 the cost of disassembly and reassembly is far more than the cost of a full head refurbish. If another valve burns in a few thousand miles, then the customer has to pay for the repair all over again, or junk the car. Of course, most customers would view this as a failed repair.

Really enjoyed this. As someone else commented I also would have lapped in the intakes on that bad cylinder whilst the head was off, would have only been a few more minutes work. Still we all know hindsight is a wonderful thing! Loved the top cover removal tool and russian spec valve compressor 😁💪

Wow just have a coil fail right after that big repair , murphys law they call that. Happens sometimes in my game and usually the customer tries to blame you and refuses to pay for the extra repair claiming some kind of warranty, luckily he was there watching you and saw you fix it with the coil. Glad it had a good ending hope he pays you properly over the time you agreed to hes lucky to get someone to except a pay later kind of deal. My boss has been burnt by customers and all repairs are pay in full on completion.

I use Hylomar on old reused gaskets. Never had one leak. Take the old gasket off, clean all surfaces, apply a very thin coating on the gasket or metal surfaces.

Cyl 1 looked quite rough and full of carbon compared to the others, the blowby on the rings could've been because the rings are gummed up with deposits, I might've been tempted to drop something in the bore at BDC and leave it to soak overnight then suck it out and change the oil, see it that freed the rings and brought the compression up or at least lessened the blowby. anyway the owner looks well happy and another great job Ivan.

Absolutely my thinking as I would’ve at least ran the liquid, Molly engine flush oil add-on through the engine for a few cycles to try to break up those deposits in the rings. I had some success with it, and for $20 a can kinda worth a shot.

I am very familiar with low cost repairs for no budget customers. I have had cars come back quickly after repairs with additional problems, usually after a couple of weeks, and then through troubleshooting found that the problem is not related to the previous repair. But, it could be a problem in the same system, like engine or evap. What is happening is the high mileage car is exhibiting problems related to mileage or age, and basically it is experiencing unrelated component failures, but they seem linked because they are in the same system. It's a little frustrating because overall you are trying to minimize the costs to the customer. However, for this high mileage car if one ignition coil fails, it is prudent to replace all of them. But, there is no money for this. So what do you do? There are not many options. Really just fix as you go. The vehicle gets whittled down kind of gradual like, until something major (meaning costly) breaks. Many times for parts you call up the auto bone yard to see if you can pull the needed part off of a scrapped vehicle, buy two cheap used coils in case the first one is bad. Test both when you fix the car and if both are okay then have the customer keep the additional coil in the trunk in case another one fails. This way if another coil fails you can do the repair your self or at a local shop.
