Had a car come in with similar. They had a #3 bank no coil power so they ordered 4 Ebay coils and changed spark plugs. After doing so the car had #1 & #4 bank no coil power. I found the connectors did not plug into the aftermarket coils properly. Made it work with pic but told them if it happens again what to look for first. Can't guarantee fix on a generic part that isn't manufactured properly. Sometimes buying the cheapest replacement part you can find isn't best.

I've seen fuel injector connectors do same thing. Had one Ford F350 V10 that had a random intermittent misfire caused by several ignition coil and fuel injector connectors! 10 new ignition coil and 10 new fuel injector connectors and it ran like great! Good Work Ivan!

its common for the coils it load the pcm drivers they did an arm chair diag....the original coil got hot and opened the connector too maybe if the customer replaced the plugs when it was time they would have avoided all this
@100SteveB5 жыл бұрын
Nice job Ivan. I reckon that whoever shot the parts at it also managed to damage those connectors, maybe by trying to poke normal multimeter probes into them. As soon as they have done something like that, BAM, the whole job of diagnosing becomes more complicated. Nice job tracking it down so quickly.

My daughter has a 2007 Escape for which I bought coils and while selecting them on RockAuto I noticed two different Motorcraft coil part numbers. When I researched the difference between these part numbers, apparently there were coils with round terminals and coils with flat terminals for the same vehicle. It was recommended to check the terminal design of your coils and purchase the coils that matched the terminal design of the coils you were replacing. I can imagine that if your vehicle had connectors for coils with round terminals and you replaced them with coils having flat terminals you might have contact issues similar to what you saw by flexing the connector.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics5 жыл бұрын
Interesting! Terminals looked flat on these, but those connector pins were spread pretty badly haha
@richardcranium58395 жыл бұрын
i would not be surprised that the connector pins on those aftermarket coils are too small by just an itsy-bitsy teeny tiny bit. maybe you should have done a drag test with one from your kit?
@adamtrombino1065 жыл бұрын
Not sure what brand coils were used, but I've seen some cheapies where the pins don't align well with the factory connectors, spreading the female pins in the connector. In some cases I've seen them where the connector is difficult to push in and get the 'click'. OEM Motorcrafts are always a smooth fit, and 'click' in easily. It sucks when you run into this problem on a van that you thought was fixed, and now just created a new problem with intermittent pin fitment. Just another part that I consider is an OEM or nothing piece, for me.

I have a BIG problem that I'm having trouble diagnosing and praying someone can pount me in the right direction. I did an oil change in my 2008 Tribute and didn't realize my dog put a hole in my funnel, until I was refilling with oil and it shot out of the hole, and filled the spark plug cavity area. To try and clean it out I sprayed some degreaser and poured water into that cavity. The next day it turned over but had a time starting. When I turned it off and tried again it wouldn't start. After sitting overnight it started but sputtered. I pulled all the coils, dried it all out and it started and seemed to run fine till I tried to pass, it started sputtering on acceleration. I don't know what else could've been affected. I didn't "spray" water, I poured about a 1/2 gallon to wrinse the oil out of that spark plug crevice, and I dried it all up, sprayed carb cleaner. Anyone have any ideas what might be fouling up???
@tinkerwest5 жыл бұрын
Why would they change pcm "twice" if ignition coil control signal was there all along? Apparently, they are not familiar with "wiggle" testing connectors. They also seemingly damage connectors by either jamming test lights or by pulling/disconnecting them improperly like cavemen...These NPR repairs are generally more difficult than those requiring parts replacement...Well done PHAD, again!
@jamesd24825 жыл бұрын
Maybe after putting in all new coils they figured it had to be the pcm again, thinking what else could it be?...lol.

It’s of course good to only run the engine as little as possible unless you know for certain the injectors are shutting down in the bad cylinders otherwise your helping trash the expensive cats. I would have put a full set of name brand coils as those Chinese wonders are apparently junk. I suspect it’s the connector pins on the coils that are the connection problem.
