Letting a customer dictate your terms/cost of service/repair is probably not a great business model, but between being a really nice guy, very curious, driven by an obsession to problem solve (eg fix things) and being absurdly qualified, equals some of the best content on KZbin . 🎉👍

Note to customer -> DON'T ask for repairs you can't afford! Leave your vehicle alone; don't even replace the windscreen wiper blades yourself you'll stuff em up. Note to Ivan -> A Freebee? How bout just the 50% discount on the previous repair & leave it at that? In my opinion the 'asking for this & that & that too' repair for just the one repair charge, then crying poor, disqualifies him from ANY kind of discount! But, well, maybe I'm a hard bathtub, but I don't suffer fools too well. Anyway Ive, apart from that rant, you did a masterful job of this repair mate! Completely logically & professionally executed, & very entertaining! 11/10!

A shorted SCM is a common Volvo item. I believe that after replacement it requires an initialization with VADIS after replacement. The pinched harness at the UCM is a common technician error on reassembly. Great job on that bypass of the circuit in the CEM. Volvo electrical diagnosis isn’t as hard as the access to the individual parts. I’ve had worse problems than these on an XC/90 too. That one was due to a soccer Mom picking up a blanket on the side of the field after the game that a mouse had been napping on while she threw it back inside the truck and drove home with it. It got underneath the carpet and gnawed through the fiber optics and some other wiring. Removing all of the seats first, second and third row was just the beginning. That nice flat floor is a build up and the actual wiring is 6 inches below the carpet. The rear seat mounting brackets are heavy as hell and very complicated to remove and re-install. I hated that job but felt good that having the whole shebang disassembled for inspection after the rodent entry was verified by the excrement trails and more chewed wiring was found. I was afraid to not fully the interior, make a repair and have my name associated with it only to later learn there was a car fire. The owners auto insurance paid all of the necessary hours thankfully as it was an extremely time consuming job.

It never ceases to amaze me that people always take the most complicated route for fixing things like throwing modules at it or chopping wires... Why it always this method when a proper diagnosis would have saved a ton of time and money... Now how much did it cost the customer after he still ended up having to pay for a proper diagnosis and repair after all the modules and wire chopping and previous tech diagnostic time... Insanity!!!! @@waiting4aliens Volvos are not usually so hard to work on, and are generally very robust. The car in these videos wasn't the problem, the owner was. I'm a DIYer myself, and maintain my own Volvo's (same generation as the one in the video) without getting into this situation. If you're a DIYer and think you need a new module, it's time to take a step back, seek some advice, or take the car to a pro. I have the Volvo diagnostic software, and for communication errors it flat out says not to replace the module, but to troubleshoot the wiring. I'm sure that note is there to prevent dealers from throwing modules at cars with network problems.

Your just brilliant and thinking you’re just about the best guy I follow, I would like to point out Ive own Volvos since the early 70’s when they were proper Swedish Volvos , I’ve owned them from then right up to day were we have 2 both V 50 diesel one 2Lt and the other a2.5 diesel a D5 engine but a good few years ago Volvo was bought out by Ford and Ford is American so when you slagging them off your really having a go at your own country manufacturing company! And I do think the old ones made by Sweden were far better than the Ford ones especially on quality, but having said that my present V50 D5 that I’ve had for about 10 years with over 160 thousand miles on the clock has never given any trouble at all 😀 but maybe that’s because I do all my services myself. Quite a few could have but none would have due to customer imposed constraints. A) the DIY butchery B) customers lack of funds? C) customers inability to understand how diagnostic charges work I don't really understand C and the 'ran out of money' issue, seeing that the customer spent a lot of money getting the car to Ivan. Was this customer under the impression that the car would be restored to A1 operating condition for just the price of an hour's diagnostics? Was there a substantial phone discussion prior to shipping the car 600-800 miles?

That trace reminds me of my clothes dryer. It blew its thermal fuse, and I traced the issue to a relay for the heater element that had a thermal event and fused itself in the closed position. That thermal event took out one of the traces. The board was out of production and used boards were too expensive. But I was able to find the relay on digikey. I got that soldered to the board minus the one leg and just soldered a wire onto that leg to bypass the trace. Worked for a few years until the new relay had a similar thermal event and took out a bunch of surface mount components. There was no fixing it. It was actually quite the sight with carbon everywhere creating paths for some good arcs and sparks. If you're going to let the magic smoke out, make it a show I guess :-)

When talking on a line phone (POTS line) you might get some static on the line. It was common that it was caused by corrosion between some contacts somewhere. The connection commonly formed a pin diode so the audio got real distorted. You could scream into the phone or slap the receiver on the table and the electrical impulse would for a short while make that diode somewhere down the line bridge better. Often people thought it was a loose connection in the receiver but really it might have been miles away. So your test light drew enough current to momentarily bridge that bad connection. OK - just a speculation about the car but it is for real on the telephones.

I like Eric the car guys website because he has a useful FAQ that imbues some great diagnostic techniques! Not sure if pine hollow has the same. E.g. Eric was diagnosing a misfiring car, and he says one of the first checks he often does is the compression test as the engine is an air pump, and the basic compression requirement must be met before it even has the chance to run well.
@major__kong
@major__kong 4 ай бұрын
@@zzoinks An internal combustion engine needs air, fuel, spark, timing, and compression. Any one of those will cause an engine to act up. A relative compression test is probably easiest since all you have to do is put an amp clamp around the battery cable. Fords have a power distribution test or something like that that is very similar to relative compression. You can easily see what cylinder isn't making a full contribution with just a scan tool. If you're pulling spark plugs out to check those, borescopes are so cheap now you might as well buy one and shove it down into the hole for a look, especially if the spark plug doesn't look normal. While only those 5 things matter, modern cars can be too smart for their own good. The coolant temp sensor might be wonky and jack up the air-fuel mixture making it hard to start or run rough if you get it started. Same with the mass air flow sensor. My engine uses a MAP sensor, which is much more robust to "air" problems.

My last Volvo was a 1992 740 wagon. That car was a paragon of simplicity. Only computers were the very simple ECU running the electronic injection, and companion ICU running the ignition. I sold it to my son's (now ex) GF at around 300K miles, last I heard she's still driving it, and loving it. The electrics were all classic Bosch, the transmission was an AW71 (Aisin Warner, same transmission as used in mid 80's Toyota trucks and Celicas). Rear axle was a Dana-30 or something.

Totally agree. The 4cyl 940's and 240's were basically the same.

I worked so much in the early 90 and late 80s's on European cars and volvo was best of all. Only problem on some was maf sensor and engine wiring harness insulation falling apart. Saab 900 was pretty reliable too. Vw and audi was and still are crap.

I had an 82 240DL that had been assembled by Swedish drunks on a Monday, it was constantly troublesome. I swore it was my first and last until my teenage daughter started driving, we bought a used 95 960 (white block inline 6, not the PRV POS) and it surprised us by being a very good car. That was followed by a 2006 XC70 and now a 2013 XC70 T6 both of which were/are excellent cars. I do almost all of my own repairs on them.

@@mandytuningI think a few years of the Volvo 240 had disintegrating wires, so those who want a classic 240 should look for certain years that have the better wiring.

I dunno, view out of the back of cars is pretty trash. Adding a cheap little camera is nice. You can't see if a child is stooped down there and on trucks it's even worse! (Even the front where you can line up several kids in a row which are hidden to the driver) @@2nickles647

Here is the problem Ivan, guys who watch you on KZbin, and bring their cars to you, forget that you are running a business. There is no one else that would even attempted to fix that car, a dealer would have laughed in his face. Whatever you charged him, he got a super deal.

Son, been there and done that. I get the challenge of not letting the car beat you. If you didn't fix it he would sure as hell say "I took it to this hot shot and he couldn't fix it" He wouldn't say I'm a cheap guy😂. Solution, read the situation and say you're too busy. I don't think you need the practice, you're pretty damn sharp young man. I don't work on Euro or Corvettes, owners are all the same mo, think they own something special, never want to spend money, I suit em up and goodbye😂

If after all you've gone through he does not appreciate what you've done you need to ban him from any future repairs. It's as if he bought this piece of junk from a scrap yard and sent it to you to see how good you are. All he needed to do was subscribe and watch all your other videos.

Wow, great fix and cleanup. You do have to be straight with the customer when it comes to money, but we've all done that extra without that added charge. It's called Goodwill. Ya it doesn't pay bills, but its payback in other ways. Thank you for another great video.
