Hi Leslie, I have another video where I put an umbilical cord heart into a larger necklace with breastmilk behind it. It looks so nice to to inlay smaller shapes on a nice background. Lots of stock images people can use on my website, including a few in this style :) Nikki

Hi can I ask why do you do two moulds but only use 1? Also how do you get the right size mould for you jewellery? Thanks
@KeepsakerSupplies
@KeepsakerSupplies 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Keely, we recommend you make two stones (perhaps with a colour variation, or add a bit of precious metal leaf to one) and send the client a proof photo to see which they prefer. Sometimes the client will ask you to set the second as an additional piece which gives them something to gift to a family member affordably, and a little extra income for yourself. I always always always let them know that I'll be returning the second free of charge though if they don't want an additional piece. They can put it in a frame or keep it as a spare. With the 18mm heart I was lucky because early on I found some glass "masters" to make moulds from that fit this setting perfectly. We also do a scalloped heart setting which I had made specifically to fit around the hearts I make moulds with. Other items, I buy the glass masters for mould making and send one to our manufacturers to make settings for - we're about to launch a few new designs that fit the moulds perfectly! I also sell mould making masters, will be listing the 18mm glass hearts if you'd like to try mould making yourself. Hope that helps! Nikki

question - would it still be possible to do this whole process in the bezel from the beginning? or do you suggest the molds then transfer?
@KeepsakerSupplies
@KeepsakerSupplies 2 жыл бұрын
The crown point heart setting we sell is open backed, so whilst you could add a layer of tape at the back to seal it and fill it with resin it would spill through the crown points. It's always much easier, in my opinion, to make stones with a mould so that a) if you make a mistake, it doesn't ruin the setting, b) your client can decide which they like best when you send them a proof picture, c) rubbing over the crown points means the stone is secure but can be removed for cleaning and repairs. I have a blog here about direct pours and stones keepsakersupplies.com/filled-vs-rubover-cabochon-settings/ We're hoping to add a heart setting soon which can be direct poured, and we will make sure the edges curve over at the top so the resin can't pop back out (like the Hannah and Ayla rings). Hope that helps! Nikki

Do you need a permit to do this? I cant find any info on it. Also, do you send a collection packet for them to send ashes to you? If yes. Do you include it in your price?
@KeepsakerSupplies
@KeepsakerSupplies 4 жыл бұрын
I've never heard of a permit needed. You could ask your local crematorium if they know of any local laws which might be applicable. Here in the UK a small sample of ashes like this is not legally classed as human remains, although Etsy don't allow the sale of pieces which will contain human ashes. I'm actually a law student and would love to know if any countries do require permits for it. All I'd recommend is good insurance coverage, and good care with health and safety, and never mixing up orders. Be strict with requiring order numbers to be used by every client when they post in ashes. Have a look at our blog where there are supplies listed for the kits we send out keepsakersupplies.com/supplies-list-usa/ We include the kit in the shipping cost Thanks Nikki

Why did you make two heart molds if you only use one?
@KeepsakerSupplies
@KeepsakerSupplies 3 жыл бұрын
I use a double mould (silicone mould) to create two cabochons/flatbacks/stones for several reasons 1. If I mess one up, I have the other 2. It's quicker to make two at the same time than separately if you don't like the first 3. You can do colour variations to see which looks nicer 4. The customer gets the choice of which they prefer 5. The spare can be kept in case they lose the necklace 6. You can earn extra by offering to set the other cabochon as a second necklace for another family member, at a reduced price. Always let the customer know that you will return all the extras free of charge whether they choose the extra piece or not

How many of these would one of the 25g resin bottles make roughly?
@KeepsakerSupplies
@KeepsakerSupplies 4 жыл бұрын
A 60g bottle lasts us for a month or so at Tree of Opals, that's dozens and dozens of pieces. I'd guess a 25g bottle would make a dozen hearts? You can refill it from the 200g bottle we sell (that's what I do) Nikki

@KeepsakerSupplies

@@mrmrsgroom8016 Thank you! So much. I'm just editing an ashes bead tutorial with our new charm cores. I really need to do a blog about yellowing soon! It's one of the most asked questions... I don't find it yellows often, unless a client misuses it (chemicals, too much sunlight etc). We remake around one piece a month over at Tree of Opals, out of perhaps 60 pieces made. Some people prefer to use epoxy and that's completely up to you, but the layers will take you days; if you pour it all in one go the ashes will sink and you don't get the nice depth . I don't think I could achieve what I achieve with epoxy, but then UV is expensive. No wastage though. Definitely a pros and cons list coming in the very near future. I'll try to remember to send you the link or just give us a like on Facebook. You're welcome to join the Breastmilk And Memorial Jewellery Group on Facebook too and I'll post it there! Nikki

@@mrmrsgroom8016 have a good read of the blogs keepsakersupplies.com/category/making-keepsake-jewellery/making-ashes-jewellery/ and it depends what country you're in. Here in the UK, a small sample of ashes aren't considered to be human remains, even if they're human (for example), and Royal Mail are happy to ship within the UK with some restrictions (blog to follow). In Australia you need a permit, apparently, but most people don't bother I hear Nikki

Does it ever go yellow or turn an off color as it ages?
@KeepsakerSupplies
@KeepsakerSupplies 4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes, if you get a bad batch of resin or the customer doesn't follow instructions. If the resin smells really strong, that's usually an indicator. When you're new to resin work, it's a good idea to make some samples (some clear, some with colour, some with practice ashes) to keep in the sunshine to see if they yellow). You can still sell during this time if you make it REALLY clear to your customer that you're still at the testing phase and charge accordingly, so they know it may yellow. You can offer unlimited remakes if you like (some people offer refunds, but that's not necessary if the customer is fully informed first). You should give your customers care instructions including not to submerge resin in water, not to expose to too much UV/sunlight, no chemicals etc. Do a bit of research and find out the things that turn resin yellow. We sell dozens and dozens of pieces a month and occasionally we will get told something has yellowed. We know it's not the batch, because other pieces we made are fine, so we know the customer has probably had it in the sun too much or got moisturiser on it etc. But we don't blame them, we just remake for free and ask them really nicely to make sure they follow the care instructions for best longevity. Hope this helps Nikki
