You can also use calcium carbonate at Amazon with free shipping! Using distilled water will decrease the chance of mold!
@PinkPoodleCrafts5 жыл бұрын
yes i started getting it there when the prices dropped below what it was on dickblick.com in the past year. And yes, good thinking... distilled water is a good idea if you live somewhere that you tend to get mold in things. I havent had that problem as of yet thankfully.

@PinkPoodleCrafts4 жыл бұрын
First of all Carol... marble dust is NOT expensive. Calcium carbonate and marble dust, although the same thing.... they are different in some ways. Calcium carbonate is a very off white/tan color....if used in gesso's and paints, the color would be less than desirable. Marble dust is calcium carbonate that has been heated to change the PH, which whitens it. So if its slightly more than buying calcium carbonate, that is why....however, like I said, straight calcium carbonate would not work for gesso's and chalk paints, etc. Gypsm IS calcium carbonate, as I explained to you in your first comment. Again, varying the ph levels changes the properties of it. A 4 pound bag of marble dust is around 15 dollars. Not very expensive considering how much you get and for typical crafter/artists needs, it would last quite a long time. The process of changing calcium carbonate into marble dust would be a hassle and the price difference isnt that significant especially considering a lot of places that sell calcium carbonate want you to buy a minimum of 25 or more lbs which then makes the shipping prices outrageous. I know this because I have bought regular straight calcium carbonate before. Im sorry you felt it was your duty to take what your husband taught you, which might be correct for construction purposes, but not for crafts/art uses, and waste your time trying to teach something that it seems you dont know squat about yourself.... to people in MY comments of MY video, while condescending me along the way. If you have something to teach people... use your own youtube account to do so in the future. Make some videos teaching all the wonderful things your husband has taught you. But its extremely rude to do so in the comments of someone elses video.

not sure thats at every walmart because Ive never seen it there. Calcium carbonate is not white, its an ivory color so you dont want that, you definitely need the marble dust specifically and ive not see that at my walmart. What brand is it and in what department? Ive looked in the hardware dept and craft departments and never seen then :(

i dont... i use such small quantities compared to what you did, Im talking tablespoons compared to 25lb bags dumbed into a big tub to be mixed...and i make sure it goes into the liquid immediately without being stirred up much...so I am not worried.

Why can't we just use chalk paint instead of gesso? Also, why can't we substitute some plaster of paris?
@connieburgess12446 жыл бұрын
I use Calcium Carbonate
@True_Joker3 жыл бұрын
Because the plaster of Paris dries too fast when you mix it with the water and it sets which I imagine is different than chalk which is always water soluble regardless of whether or not it dries and is rehydrated

Why not put all ingredients in the food processor?
@PinkPoodleCrafts7 жыл бұрын
Because its so small it wouldnt fit them all very well, and it would likely make a mess lol If I had a bigger one, I would! But I still initially have to just put the powder in to process it separately so it breaks down a bit... if it was suspended in liquid, it wouldnt break down as well. :) Its kind of like why you dont put flour through the sifter after its been mixed with the wet ingredients, it just wouldnt work out as well :)

What is marble dust? is this plaster of Paris ??
@True_Joker3 жыл бұрын
No. Because it's the filler. The plaster would dry super fast so it only work if you're using a super small project while the marble doesn't dry like that. But you can use powdered chalk in place of the marble powder whether it's colored or white whether you buy drawing chalk and smash it up yourself or buy powdered chalk 🤷 either way the chalk would replace the marble powder

@Carol Gibbons Carol, Im not sure what questions Im being asked that youre referring to? Im not "winging" anything, as you put it. I answer things based on what I have learned. Im sorry its not good enough for you, I was unaware I needed to know the chemistry of every little thing I used in my diy/crafts. I know enough about marble dust to do what I need to do. Besides, plater of paris is not a combo of gypsum AND calcium carbonate.... Gypsum IS calcium carbonate, just heated which changes the PH and then it becomes calcium oxide which is what dry plaster is. But thank you for your unnecessary response to my video.

I have read others use Plaster of Paris. Have you tried that or is the Marble Dust best?
@LesliesCreativeStudio7 жыл бұрын
My experience has been that the marble dust works best, but as always, if that's all you have, I would use it!
@PinkPoodleCrafts7 жыл бұрын
Marble dust is definitely better because it is the actual ingredient in real gesso. :)
@evelynbarney8217 жыл бұрын
In the spirit of 'use what you have' Plaster of Paris is okay - but it won't make CLEAR gesso. It has too much pigment of its own. That said, I over-did my first batch of gesso (too much marble dust) and it never needed paint. That stuff is W-H-I-T-E. Turns out the recipe I used is intended to cover and smooth sculpture ;)

@Carol Gibbons wrong again carol... do NOT tell people to use Spackle for their art projects. Spackle is meant for construction work... NOT for crafting. Spackle has other chemicals/ingredients in it that makes it more harmful than regular texture pastes..,... like silica, mica, talc, etc. Especially in its dry form, its not good to be inhaling that. Thats why when spackling or sanding the spackle or join compound, they say to wear a respirator. Stop giving advive about construction items for use in crafting without knowing the difference. This is ART not construction. Also, marble dust is NOT expensive.... not at all. Who is going to go to home depot and buy a large 50lb bag of calcium carbonate which is a weird off white color and wouldnt work for gesso's or texture pastes, when they can get a 4lb bag of purified white marble dust for under 15 bucks.

I just made this. The white acrylic paint I was using was so watery that I used part white impasto and no water, then added the glue, all mixed fine... then the marble dust. It was like a science experiment gone wrong! As it started growing up like a giant marshmallow, I was racing to the kitchen sink. I got there just before it oozed up over the edge and down the sides. I've tried to google what could cause reaction this but can't find anything. Any idea what happened?
@PinkPoodleCrafts7 жыл бұрын
OMG lol I dont have any clue what could have caused...what is white impasto??? I would imagine maybe that was the culprit?
@evelynbarney8217 жыл бұрын
THICK paint - the kind you'd use with a pallet knife. I don't know the chemistry of impasto - but this does sound like an acid/base reaction (like baking powder).
@BelindaShort7 жыл бұрын
Were you using Acrylic Impasto gel or Oil Impasto cause some are an alkaloid base. Usually impasto is made by adding paint to a thickening additive. Def sounds like an acid/base issue.
