The funny thing is this isn’t the first time a foreign Pinocchio film got an absolutely bonkers English dub with an extremely unfitting voice for the title character, since the 2002 English dub of Roberto Benigni rendition had freaking Breckin Myer voicing Pinocchio of all people, so it’s funny how history repeats itself .

This movie looks so different because it's based on another book. At the beginning of the 20th century, the writer Alexei Tolstoy began to translate the original fairy tale about Pinocchio, but he was so impressed that he composed a new story with a common beginning and called it The Golden key or the Adventure of Pinocchio (Золотой ключик или приключение Буратино). that's why the cartoon can look a little crazy, but for us it's a strange cartoon with familiar characters. Русскоговорящие ставим лайки, американцы должны знать «правдивую историю» 🤣

2:46 Oh, so it’s based on “Burotino’s adventures or The Golden Key” Russian analogue of Pinocchio. That is why the story is so different. The only similarity is that each story has a wooden boy. The original Russian story has the Country of fools and a giant talking turtle who is changed to a fairy in this film for whatever reason, but okay.

I've never watched that one myself, but I can see that they kinda (really poorly) tried mixing Pinoccio with Buratino. Buratino (or Golden Key) had basically nothing common with Pinocchio except the main character. In Buratino there was a puppet show theatre, with main antagonist Karabas (who basically used child labour and was a cruel man) and a there were bunch of kids who worked in the theater. Except Malvina (the blue haired one) was a runaway in that version. The point of that story was that Buratino had to find the key, that was hidden in his father's home, behind the fake fireplace painted on the wall, before Karabas does. While Karabas was hunting Buratino to make him say where the key is hidden. Buratino never had a dream to become a "real boy" I also see what characters they added from Buratino in this movie but they are playing completely different role there. Overall yeah, pretty shitty movie lol

It would be better if they made a new adaptation of Pinocchio (there is a good cartoon and two high-quality film versions). The very spirit of the story is very different from Pinocchio, both in plot and message. The Soviet adaptation of The Jungle Book is great.

@@t1kvin I am glad to see that someone in the West knows about the Soviet adaptation of the Jungle book. According to many, this is one of the best cartoons in history and much closer to the original story of Kipling (well, except for Bagheera who changed her gender =))). It was even a pity when in the review about the Jungle Book the Critic did not mention this version as close to the spirit of the original.

Pinocchio doesn't even look like a puppet. His design is the same as all the human characters, he doesn't have any joints or angles, and his body bends and moves like a normal person. The only indication that he's not a real boy is a slight wood grain pattern on his face, but that's not even very noticeable.

In 1923 Alexey Tolstoy, who helped with translation of "Pinoccio" by Carlo Collodi to russian, wrote a remake supposed to be closer to modern soviet society - "Adventures of Buratino" which became classic literature for kids and had decent movie and animated film adaptations. Almost a hundred years later Vasiliy Rovenskiy remade "Buratino" back to "Pinoccio" in attempt to be closer to modern western society, which became a disasterpiece.

Funny fact. This sound effect 9:19 was not in the original voice acting... As a Russian, I don't understand why unnecessary replicas and cheap sound effects from the old Warner Bros cartoons are added to the American adaptation. Is this really funny for someone?

It's kinda hilarious that there would actually be a valid reason (apart from pure cynicism) to "remake" these properties, if you'd stick closer to the original stories and turn them into good 70/80s-style gateway horror movies for children.

Yes, like for example the circus director is 70% Karabas Barabas. In Russian version he is a big and scary man with long long beautiful beard, who actually has a doll theatre. So the whole story makes more sense. And i actually think that Buratino is different in many ways and has its own moral and story so i find it really strange, that someone decided to merge it together with pinocchio, destroying everything good that it has and that could be interested for nonrussian people.

Yep. In 2002, there was an AWFUL American dub of Roberto Benigni's version of Pinocchio with an extremely unfitting voice cast for the main character. (the movie itself is considered by some people one of Benigni's weaker movies since they find it odd that the main character, who is supposed to be a kid, was played by the then 50-years old Benigni and looked more human than wooden) Now, we have this... As someone who has a degree in equine science, spent 14 years learning to ride, and worked on a Thoroughbred breeding farm in Kentucky, I'll be the first to admit I would love a movie about a kid who joins the circus and has an act doing trick riding (doing the flips and poses on the back of the horse while it's in motion, which is bizarrely animated correctly in this movie) and liberty work (riding/doing tricks with a horse without a bridle or harness). The beauty and difficulty of this kind of a performance, the relationship between man and animal who have to communicate via non verbal communication on a level that is advanced even for plenty of experienced horse riders, and the wonder and awe of the audience would make a wonderful movie. Think Greatest Showman if the movie was about a performer and his relationship with his horse. Why the hell this is in Pinnochio I have no clue. My jaw dropped when I saw that the reason the circus wanted him wasn't because of his trick riding, but that he could ride a horse without a bridle; spoiler alert plenty of people in third world countries ride their horses or donkeys this way. This should not be a big deal in this time period.

it’s based on “Burotino’s adventures or The Golden Key” Russian analogue of Pinocchio. That is why the story is so different. The only similarity is that each story has a wooden boy. There's a whole genra of Japanese anime purposefully badly dubbed in French in the 80's (the main one I remember right now is "Ken the survivor"). Dubbed over the top and cheesy by choice, especially the violent vilains, to tone it down from violent and serious for kids. They have a cult following nowadays in France. The result is pretty funny (so bad it's good? I guess it's subjective), though any fan of the original animes would scream murder! XD

Hello Nostalgic Critic. I am very glad that you had fun with our cartoon, but I would like to advise you even more "fun". Children vs Wizards. I assure you you will love it. P. S. Sorry for my English. It's all a translator.

In order to make this movie a FLAWLESS ten outta ten After Pinocchio turns into a real boy, they change his voice actor to someone just giving it their all, a genuine performance.

I honestly wished there was a scene in this film where they recreated the scene in Office Space where they destroy the Printer, but if it was Pinocchio instead.

The funny thing is that it's not Pinocchio. This is Buratino, a Russian fairy tale inspired by Pinocchio. The only common feature of these two fairy tales is that the main character is a doll, they have a different story and a different message. When translating , the names were replaced with names from Pinocchio

As I wrote above, this is not Pinocchio, this is Buratino.A completely different fairy tale, and alas, the last good adaptation of this fairy tale was before the collapse of the USSR, this is a 1975 film that I recommend watching, as well as a 1959 cartoon

I unironically love when Pauly Shores voice acts. There's something so hilarious about the way he just slurs his way through it and seems to not give a crap that makes it...weirdly endearing to me. I have no idea why either. This movie is a super entertaining trainwreck.

This version of Pinocchio looks and sounds so bad that i'm actually looking forward to Robert Zemeckis and Guillermo del Toro's versions this year and i actually miss Breckin Meyer's voice in the English Dub of Roberto Benigni's version of Pinocchio. (The 2002 version not the 2019 version where he played Geppetto this time.)
