This is a very important video. Thank you Bill! Somehow anyone talking about safety tends to get stigmatized as being someone negative or paranoid, but that is really the wrong attitude. Remember the dead tell no tales and the ones who have freak accidents also tend not to talk about it. Think before doing, imagine what could go wrong, take measures to prevent it. Most of us want to skate without ruining our health so we should act accordingly. Also when skating on sidewalks care that you don't risk collisions with people and animals (dogs cats birds) especially with the more fragile ones (elderly and children etc).

I live on a big hill too and it's the reason that I'm far more comfortable on steep slopes than gradual ones. I have no problem linking sharp carves in the steeps and keeping my speed low, but on a long gradual downhill I'll get going a little too fast for my ability to stop, at which point I become a bit of a runaway train and have to bail. Weird problem to have. Crushed a massive hill a few days ago and then got the worst road rash of my life in the run-out... Even putting safety aside, it's not a good look. I've been going to the park every day since drilling high speed p-stops.

speed is a big one for me. the stoppard powerslide is cool and all, but when i am going really fast i feel like i cant use it at all. planning ahead more is important, meaning slowing down before intersections and corners i cant see. also i still use a heelbrake, because combined with a t-stop you can break well at pretty high speeds
@moctezuma_23 жыл бұрын
Powersliding from higher speeds will require you to gain more leg strength, but it will result in higher stopping power. If heelbrake is your thing, by all means! Just don't expect to stop as quickly as Stoppard does in his videos.

Great video Bill. I think another one is checking your equipment before going out. I did a hard session at the skate park one day and the next day decided to go do a hill I had been meaning to try. I believe from all the stomping the rear bolt on my frame was slightly loose. While carving to control my speed on the hill my frame shifted well out of position and caused me to slide out. It was a painful lesson and I now take the extra minute it takes to check everything is secure.

Man, I absolutely love your footage. You got a lot of unique moves and you got the best style out of all these vids on KZbin. I would honestly add skitching to this list. To the top of this list actually. Skitching, for those who haven’t heard of it, is when you grab onto a vehicle for a fast and easy ride. I think it gets it’s name from the amalgamation of the two words hitching and skating, and that’s where you get ‘Skitching’. But let’s get to real talk here. I used to skitch as a teenager and One time I accidentally hit a small pot hole, lost my balance and fell into the curb really hard. I remember just sitting there in terrible pain for about ten minutes before I could even get up. The reason it happened was because It was nearly impossible to detect the imperfections of any urban street, and it is that very fact that makes this act so dangerous. Especially in busy streets where there may be another vehicle behind you. It scared the crap out of me and I never did it since. I never want to feel that pain again and I wouldn’t wish upon anyone or anything. But what I was thinking was that in a big city like Toronto, skitching would be exponentially dangerous than in most smaller cities. I think you should totally either add that to the vid or even do a full vid focusing on this subject. I’m sure it’s hurt a lot of people who didn’t practice this safely maybe even killed some. I wouldn’t doubt it for a second. Also the skating world would be forever grateful, I am sure of it. Either way keep up the good vid making man. Solid work and great styles!

I would dare to go further... Skating, with the car's traffic, is not just seeing but seeing AND listening... I don't feel safe at all, skating on streets using headphones! I think that listening the cars from behind is so important as see the cars in the front.

1) A surprising amount of dogs seem to dislike and/or get startled by rollerbladers! As I approach a dog walking with its human, I try to make eye contact with the human and check whether it seems like they are ready to stop their dog from lunging at me as I go by. I have had some very close calls where the dog waited until the last second to lunge at me, almost causing me to hit the dog (which would probably really hurt it!) and/or crash myself as I try to avoid it 2) Some pedestrians and drivers are unfamiliar with the physics and body language of rollerblading. By this I mean, when you pull up to a stop sign at a busy intersection on a bike, drivers can see that you're facing in the same direction as traffic, intending to continue in that direction, and they know roughly how long it will take you to get moving again from a standstill. Whereas on rollerblades, sometimes stopping at an intersection requires a move that rotates your body language seemingly 'away' from the direction you actually intend to travel next. Or maybe, you're standing there waiting your turn to cross, but the pavement is rough, uneven, or not level, so you are doing a bit of a dance back and forth. Resulting in the driver guessing incorrectly about which way you're about to go, and possibly pulling out in front of you, or turning in front of you

my experience to raise some awareness: if plan to go on grass, check out the soil first there a nice long hill near me (maybe 500-600 feet) that lets me get way beyond normal speeds. after leveling out for 15 feet at the base, theres about 30-40 feet of grass with a smooth base of soil to slow down while turning before the street. i once took it at the usual blistering top end speed only to roll onto the grass. it must have rained that morning and dried on the surfaces, so the soil was still wetter than normal and instead of rolling over the compact soil my wheels bit into it and i SLAMMED down faster than i could even dream of putting my hands out. slammed completely flat on the ground and barely had enough time to reflexively turn my head had i not been able to turn my head just in time, i more likely than not would have gotten up with a broken nose and probably some sort of facial fracture. both collarbones, the side of my face/cheek, and hip deserved solid bruises that took a while to clear i now take the hill as fast as i always have, but i do check the soil to see how wet it is and if i sink or not. there are also a few other nice downhill spots i love to hit too, but those never taught me this lesson since theyre bare dust otherwise :)

The last time I've tried to practice I entered in a steep sidewalk because I didn't brake enough, so I simply let the skaters take me and at the end the sidewalk was not smooth anymore, it was paving stones... and I didn't have any idea what I have to do to brake.... so I started to lose control, my body wanted to go back and I were trying to keep crouching... and finally I saw that my speed was less fast and I decided to spin to finish that nightmare (hehehehe...)... but even with the spin I falled but I didn't hurt a lot. Watching this after a fun skating session in my small town. I had some speed and wanted to use a pole to swing a corner. Turned out it had metal braided cord attached to it and I caught some metal and cut my hand meat open pretty nicely. Your video reminded me to get a glass of water.

This was hilarious and awesome regardless of the fact that I've almost died most of the ways described, multiple times. One of my favorites in the Bill Stoppard Pantheon, for sure

It is a good and great advice. That is fact of life. When learning how to drive car. If one takes classes before hands on practice they educate you the danger on the road, to be prepared and reflex. Knowing make you proactive. Thank you. The world at times can be harsh. As riding my bike I get lots of confrontation. Side walk ppl will scream that I should be where roads for cars,. The people who is driving car wants out of their road. Most people are nice. Those few people they take your cool away. Seems like to pick a fight. places in Toronto there are in line rinks. The roads are not bike, and skate friendly. So we just have to adjust. if It's my feth I my die, while asleep. No worries friend.

I've knocked out a bloke like that in central London, the look of shock on his face, when he realised I could take him out wearing skates was priceless. I left him to come round on the floor Sometimes you have to teach bullies a painful lesson

Ohh, the confrontation bit, was that in an older video? Curious about what happened there. Bill seemed so calm.

Excellent video, I know I've done several of these ways and been lucky to not have paid the price. Going to be smarter, thanks.

Things that could potentially and almost taken me out skating: 1. Cars that bust random U-Turns 2. Uneven Sidewalks 3. Unleshed dogs and leashed dogs that arent being restrained. 4. Parking lots

open manhole, a tragicomic death, straight into the sewer. a good reason not to get distracted from the road.
