Matt, I have to say this. I never would have become Catholic (but I don’t know the future of course) if it weren’t for Catholic channels like yours. The only thing that got me wondering, as a Protestant, if Catholicism was actually true, was watching educational videos on KZbin and actually interacting with Catholics in the comments sections. I had zero close friends who were Catholic, so these conversations never would have come up. So please know that your channel is important ❤️

Your Protestant friends if they are truly christian they will accept your Christianity as a Catholic. I ran a catholic prayer group for several years and most were actually Protestant and they all learned to have a great respect for Catholics. They experienced Truth rather than the lies said about Catholics. They even learned the truth about the rosary that we see Mary as our Spiritual Mother and see her as living like we ourselves. Some have difficulty understanding that when we ask each other for prayer there’s no difference between us asking for prayer for our brothers and sisters and asking for the Saint’s to pray for us.

Both sides have a valid point to make. It is a tool that can be used for great good (evangelization, growing in the faith, and apologetics). But social media has also been engineered to exploit human psychology and be as addictive as possible, so it should be used with great prudence and temperance. Some things that help for example are keeping in mind why you're opening it in the first place (being very intentional), and having very strict time limits on it. Otherwise, it can very easily turn into the Lotus Casino in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.

For me, the biggest Achilles heel for a social media platform is when there's some degree of anonymity. For one thing, it makes it easier to forget that there's a flesh and blood human being on the other side of the conversation. For another, it allows you to say or do whatever you want without accountability. Like, if you post on Facebook, odds are, the people who are going to see it are people you actually know, and they'll hold you accountable for it. Whereas, on Twitter or Reddit or something, the poster is just a name, with or without an avatar, and on 4Chan, it's just a random string of characters that changes when you hop into a new thread. Unfortunately, the combination of not seeing the other person and lack of accountability tends to make people worse versions of themselves, not better.

I think Trent Horn is right about having a level of charity and benefit of the doubt towards the Quran as you would want a Muslim to have towards the Bible, because when I've practiced this it goes really far in making dialogues with Muslims go much smoother, better, and deeper. I feel we come to a deeper level of understanding of each others faiths and gives each other inside access to the intricacies of the others faiths, and it's interesting. Now obviously, this has to be done in a way where we try and bring the Muslim to an understanding of the Gospel, and in a way that isn't univeralistic or relativistic. But it is really fascinating.

At the 36:00 mark it makes me think about the doctrine of soul sleep. I really was into the idea through college because I learned about Sheol from the perspective of Seventh Day Adventists. Now I’ve changed my mind on soul sleep. If we are a soul, then the material body God gave us would have no impact on our spiritual health. I’m beginning to think that we can’t be just souls with bodies because our connection to the body is critical to who we are. The Catholic understanding of perfect unity between the soul we have and the body we have that help make us who we are also points to the fullness of Christ the God-Man, fully God and fully Man who had that perfect union of body and soul. Thanks for sharing Trent!

Not sure if anyone agrees with me, but word to the easily bored, there is a huge section in the middle describing the battle of Waterloo and I just skip it. I didn't feel like it added anything to the story. Hugo was writing at the same time as Dickens and they got paid per word, so I think it was just added to stuff the word count. Tell me if I'm wrong. It does feel scary because we used to feel a false safety perhaps. Were we in those times building up the Church militant? Were we growing in our faith? It seems now that we must come to a point of decision. There is no more sitting on the fence. I trust that God is permissively allowing the challenges to grow and develop our faith. All for the glory of God.🙏

16:27 I actually think reading thoughts only when someone is thinking well of you would be worse than only when they are being disparaging. Now you would both know that they aren't thinking well of you, but not the nature of those ill thoughts. That would torture the hell out of me.

Actually this sort of sums up how I normally think of others because I've always been a pariah. So I never think someone is being charitable.

That one didn't like Citizen Kane and the other was unaware of it is very very very disappointing.

Yes. It really is. Two men in their forties who love Marvel, but dislike Orson Welles/ Mank.... these are the people who are going to be commenting on what good Christian media should be?!? This is a perfect example of why Christian media tends to stink.

I find with social media the key is being aggressive in your curation. Like I found I unfollowed a ton of political and even culture-critical accounts on all the platforms and started following more spiritual, art, and gardening accounts, and made a point of hitting like on the good stuff and eventually it started changing what the algos were pushing at me. But I have to be careful to not engage with negative content even if I fall into watching it, because it will quickly undo what I've done to try to fix my feeds. They certainly seem to default to promoting the worst parts of our nature. BTW, they say that in China, TikTok's algo promotes content about learning math and science. In theory there should be a way to make TikTok positive in this part of the world but it's definitely swimming upstream.
Y'all should try to talk to Chris Williamson. He has a lot of really interesting discussions about the dynamics between men and women, but from a thoroughly non-religous perspective. I think it would be really cool to interface with his perspectives, as well as to show to him and his audience how many of the problems that he talks about have solutions/answers in the Catholic tradition.

I so agree! Often watching him I think "Guys you don't need to reinvent the wheel, just become a practicing Catholic and find yourself a wholesome Catholic girl with a brain and a good sense of humor".

Ok, so if you can't tell I am stopping to comment every time I hear something interesting. So now you're talking about care for the soul and the body, and Trent went into a bit of a tangeant about whether one exists as a person between death and the second coming. I lean the same way as Trent does, but then I can't square that with purgatory. Is it just your soul that exists in purgatory? That doesn't seem to make sense in terms of sanctification if it is not the whole person. Would love to hear more on this topic.

So I should stop telling Calvinists that they embrace a theology of nihilism.😂

I'm so confused about this corruptionist vs what did they call it, survivalist topic...I'd like them to talk about it more. In the movie Father Stu, it says, "we're not humans having a spiritual experience, where spirits having a human experience" I guess Trent would disagree with that...what does the church say? I 💯 agree that our bodies and the use of them deeply affects our souls and our behavior...I'm just really curious about this discussion.
