You can tell the love and devastation that Nicola is feeling for Sarah. It’s so sad but great to keep her memory alive and raise awareness.

At 44, with DCIS, facing masectomy on Tuesday, I'm one of these younger women. My biggest frustration is that no one can tell me why this has happened to me. Our healthcare system focuses on cure. Surely prevention is better than cure?

The biggest risk for getting a breast cancer is being a woman. There is nothing you can do to prevent it completely. We can just start checking earlier and find it when it's early, like your diagnosis. The most important thing now is to invest more money into metastatic breast cancer research so that women like Sarah don't die.

@aleta5024 Yes, BUT if more research were to be done into DCIS, steps could have been taken to PREVENT it. Before you post again, remember I had my masectomy yesterday & I am in a lot of discomfort & pain, dragging a surgical drain wherever I go.

@@fenlandwildlifeclips I'm sorry you are in pain. I know how it feels. I've had mastectomy 4 years ago at the age of 47 after my stage 3c breast cancer diagnosis. At the moment the breast cancer research is mostly focusing on prevention and treatment of the primary breast cancer whilst very little funding goes towards metastatic breast cancer research. Every breast cancer diagnosis is tragic, but not every diagnosis is terminal. One day my cancer will come back and that day may be soon. You cannot imagine the fear I have to live with every day. Did you know that on average after your metastatic diagnosis you will live 2 to 5 years only? Now compare these statistics to DCIS diagnosis, 98% of women will be alive after 10 years. I hope you can understand now why I'm advocating for more metastatic bc research. Wishing you a speedy recovery

@aleta5024 Yes, of course, all cancer research is important, especially better treatment for stage 4. Sometimes, it starts with DCIS. If mine hadn't been found, it would have become invasive and eventually stage 4. I'm very lucky, though the full extent/severity won't be known until later on.
