Today is day 8 of pip watch for Jackie & Shadows eggs. The footage begins with Jackie incubating the eggs all night long in the snow. She kept them covered, warm and protected - occasionally getting up to shake the snow from her wings.
Shadow arrives at the nest bright and early and Jackie gets up for their first incubation shift change. Shadow stayed on the eggs for three hours incubation them! He gets up and we have a zoom on the eggs. You can now see the dark spot on the egg no longer has that tiny feather stuck on it. You can also see it is not an indentation - it is just a stain on the egg shell. The first egg is no longer viable (day 42) but we still are hopeful that the two other remaining eggs will hatch. We should be seeing a pip in the second egg any time now as this is Day 39. The third egg is at day 36 today.
Jackie arrives with fluff for the nest and she convinces Shadow to get up by nudging him till he got up off the eggs! She settles down and takes over incubation. Thank you for watching!

Thank you Lady Hawk for this great video and your coverage here. No one wants to see Jackie and Shadow hatch an Eaglet more than me. I usually do not watch this nest due to the track record of disappointment but I'm definitely keeping an eye on it now since there's 3 eggs at stake. 3 eggs means Jackie is let down by no hatches and is now determined to hatch chicks. Only problem is this may be beyond her control as the windchill of 80 feet up and persistent Alaskan style conditions are working against their goals despite how well they've incubated. I've always believed this nest needs help with all natural insulating materials added to the base to keep the cold air from shooting through the bottom to the eggs. I wish it hadn't have snowed again there. Great footage all around put together here and they are in my prayers for egg #2 and egg #3. Thanks LH💜🙏✝️

You may be right, TSEP, but I suspect that the cold may not be quite such a problem. Bald eagles hatch in Alaska too. As for the cold air chilling the nest from beneath, there are so many layers of fluff that get packed down between seasons that there may be much better insulation than we realize. Add to that, the aeration that J&S do with the current layer of fluff, which ostensibly would allow warmed air from their bodies to be trapped beneath them, and they may be in better shape that we imagine.

Last year was my first season watching Jackie and Shadow or any bird live stream for that matter. I was so devastated when the eggs ended up not hatching and have been so hopeful for this season and I'm not giving up hope 🙏💕 I know the weather isn't the issue as the largest population of eagles live in Alaska so I'm confused on what is causing the eggs from last season and now Egg #1 to not be viable. This pair have fledged eaglets before and I'm praying they get that opportunity again because they deserve it ❤❤

I see these eggs, and I see like cracks not poo. I hope out of these 3 one survives. And if none survive, it will make no difference. Only that millions around the world who are watching them, will be sadden by the outcome. They are precious birds, and they will keep on going. They will try again and again. They are still young at heart, we cannot look at them like we look at ourselves, humans. There are elements that affected the loss of the eggs, where they live, the weather, the nest itself, the environment and other factors I won't mention in this comment. I still have some hope and egg or all 3 will hatch and even if my hope does not come to completion, they still remain two magnificent birds of prey, and the weather will eventually change for the both and all who live in the Big Bear Valley!

It’s just really cold there with snow and storms. I just hope for a baby for them. This is such a big part of their lives. I can’t help but think it’s the weather. But an egg that’s not viable could mean a lot of things. It happened in two nests this season.

Hi Flyfree that is correct - we really don't know why the first egg is not viable. Jackie and Shadow are doing everything right! They have been meticulous in their incubation of the eggs and the timing of their shift changes, Jackie did practice some delayed incubation early on but then she began full incubation and has kept it up all this time. Jackie and Shadow have consistently rolled the eggs and kept them warm this entire time. Some times an egg will not hatch because it was never fertilized. We have seen this happen here in prior seasons. Also an egg may not hatch that was fertilized but something could have caused the development of the embryo to stop growing. This could be caused by being left alone in cold temperatures, failure to roll the egg, something genetic inside the embryo that failed to continue to develop, a nick in the eggshell can cause bacteria to enter and disrupt the egg forming process. Egg #1 is no longer viable because it is past the incubation time for eagle eggs to hatch. Normal incubation rangers from 35 days to 40 days. There has been a few exceptions for an egg hatching on day 41 but it is rare. After that time period, we know the egg is no longer viable. Now with that said, the other two eggs remain on pip watch and we are hopeful that they both will hatch. ♥♥ Egg #2 is at day 39 today and Egg #3 is at day 36 - so both are within the window of hatching. Jackie and Shadow will continue to incubate and roll the eggs until they hatch. Some eagle parents incubate non viable eggs for up to two months - but most give up after a period of time and either bury them in the nest or they are left for other predators to eat them. Egg 3 is realistically the only viable chance left and the clock is ticking faster on that. Fearing not only we get another lost season for eggs, but with repeated failures eagles do at times switch and build new nests. Is this the J+S and FOBBV series finale?

Jackie's eaglets have typically hatched on day 38/39 according to FOBBV, so two of the eggs are still viable.

It's frustrating not seeing zooms of the eggs. And it's not fair that the negative actions of a few penalize the rest of us by not seeing the eggs up close. This is nature and human emotions should never be tied to the wild animals. Nonetheless, I am not in charge and I have to respect the decisions of the ones that are in charge. I've watched eagle nests for 10 years and yes sometimes it's sad but it is nature. By not zooming on the eggs during the short windows all of us have to see them takes some of the joy of eagle watching away for me personally. I still hope for a successful clutch for Jackie and Shadow!

Lady Hawk, Thank you for the updates. Can you explain the reasons for non hatching eggs. I am concerned about the 2nd, and have read that it is very unusual to lose more than one out of three. Is that true. Also, as a human, I understand grief, but don't want to anthromorphize( project human emotions to Eagles).... If there are no hatches, do the Eagles grieve and feel disappointment, or is this part of "the process" and they get over it.... until next year...... I'm finding my compassion heart bleeding a little....... and I sense many others feeling this way.... can you provide us a little education on human disappointment vs. Eagle disappointment? Again, so much gratitude to you.

As to your question on eagles feeling grief or sadness, I do believe that they do in some way experience a sense of loss - I have seen it when an eagle loses its mate or when a chick dies on the nest. At the SWFL when Harriet lost Ozzie - she mourned and grieved for me for a couple weeks. Her cries calling out for him day after day just broke all our hearts - so she did experience and feel that loss. But she moved forward and met M15 and carried on. Eagles move forward very quickly after a loss, whether their nest was destroyed, a mate goes missing or chick dies, they have to move forward in order to survive. Humans on the other hands get trapped in grief and loss and that can go on for long periods of time. For eagles, moving forward quickly means survival and that is instinctual. Jackie and Shadow will know when to move on here as well ♥

Lady Hawk, is it possible that she delayed hatching more than normal because she has 3 eggs? And does the cold wet yucky weather affect the eggs even though they have been meticulous with sitting on the eggs and keeping them warm?

Hi Jomama I did not see Jackie delay incubation any difficult with three eggs then she has done in the past with two eggs. That is an interesting questions about the cold weather...I would think that the eggs would be warm enough under Jackie or Shadow with their internal heaters at 105 F. Alaska has an extremely large bald eagle population and their weather is just as cold. I know that the cold weather will play a factor after a chick has hatched and can't fit under Jackie any longer and will be lost to hypothermia as we saw with BBB and Cookie. But in my opinion, the eggs are fine and warm enough under Jackie. It could be that not all the eggs were fertilized this season. The fact that this has happened to Jackie and Shadow in the recent past makes me concerned it could also be some sort of environmental issues perhaps with DDT still in the waterway or some other type of toxin that may affect fertility. That is just a thought, as I am not aware of any studies being done on currently on this issue.

We have seen this happen here in prior seasons. Also an egg may not hatch that was fertilized but something could have caused the development of the embryo to stop growing. This could be caused by being left alone in cold temperatures, failure to roll the egg, something genetic inside the embryo that failed to continue to develop, a nick in the eggshell can cause bacteria to enter and disrupt the egg forming process. Egg #1 is no longer viable because it is past the incubation time for eagle eggs to hatch. Normal incubation rangers from 35 days to 40 days. There has been a few exceptions for an egg hatching on day 41 but it is rare. After that time period, we know the egg is no longer viable. Now with that said, the other two eggs remain on pip watch and we are hopeful that they both will hatch. ♥♥ Egg #2 is at day 39 today and Egg #3 is at day 36 - so both are within the window of hatching. Jackie and Shadow will continue to incubate and roll the eggs until they hatch. Some eagle parents incubate non viable eggs for up to two months - but most give up after a period of time and either bury them in the nest or they are left for other predators to eat them. Jackie & Shadow are very dedicated parents and are so deserving of raising eaglets again! We keep hope alive!

L H--I've been looking into 3 egg clutches .Not much info on them as far as how many hatch---only that(Wikipedia) it's rare for all 3 to hatch and reach fledgling stage. So that's where we are currently. First egg is past 41 day limit for ANY BE egg to hatch. In Captivity Eagles can lay up to 7 eggs although in the wild its rare for even 4 eggs to be laid. As far as the remaining 2 eggs, J& S are such good parents, that any eagle life factor under their control would be 'Most' positive relative to hatching activity. I'll close with this: For all three Eggs to NOT to hatch would be something even Wikipedia would {note} in it's very broad account of eagle activity and life. The many W Biologists doing research on reproductive aspect of eagles in Wild would have made that fact public if it was observed. I view this Clutch as not like a typical 2 egg clutch being wiped out as 0 for 2( Many E Pairs have had those, including J & S)---but as a likely 2 for 3 or as a more likely a 1 for 3. A 'O for 3' very much more unlikely than either of the other Combo's happening.

I personally think with delayed incubation there’s still one more day, but I recognize that it’s likely wishful thinking and I’m ok with that. Another possibility is, she knew one of the first two wasn’t right so she added one to the clutch. No way to know. Just gotta keep watching. Eagles don’t give out spoilers. 🤫

Hello Nook Jackie and Shadow are doing everything right! it honestly is most likely the cold/snow. Eagles in alaska/canada don't lay eggs til april or may. At the altitude J &S are at, they should be laying later than january. But they are too far south.

@phantasma616 Possibly. But, Jackie has had hatches under these same conditions. Unfortunately, the storms took some chicks, but some survived to fledge. Unfortunately, J & S's only known survivor is Spirit. It's definitely a mystery.

There are nests that still have issues like thin shells, etc., which doesn't seem to be happening here, although Jackie did have one that broke upon laying. I heard that their biologist Sandy put out a heartfelt statement on FB addressing the need to halt their chat, do less zooms on the eggs, and, encouraging viewers to feel what they're feeling.
