An exhaustive list of all tobacco pipe lighter options and their pros / cons.
One feature often overlooked is resistance to wind. Every butane soft flame lighter option is fairly hard to keep lit in any wind (bic, butane refillable pipe lighters). Matches and liquid fuel wick lighters take much more wind before they go out.
Lighting a pipe while also shielding the lighter and bowl from the wind is tricky, much harder than a cigar or cigarette.
Overall, matches seem the most versatile for a sit down smoke. And, a zippo wick liquid fuel pipe lighter is my favorite for walks (lunting) with a pipe.
Still, having a bic or a mini bic lighter as a backup in the car, at home, in my pocket is preferred. They’re so cheap, it’s worth having many of them floating around (especially for when someone asks to borrow a lighter).
I love having lots of fun options to light, so obviously I prefer the ‘hoarder special’ where I use every one.
