I agree with you on who they are and where they are. Having been there. First I determine if they are coming for me by changing course. If they change course, it is out with all lights, out on the AIS, and out with my very loud talking partner. At 200 yards a round in their boat should should make them have a second choice. After that if they are still following it does get messy. I was anchored one night. 31' Sail, with my wife. Heard someone climbing on board at the cockpit. With Mr. Smith in hand, I quickly pushed open the companionway door. Let one round loose, I have never seen a human move so fast. He jumped over the railing, into his beat up old junk boat. He had a partner who started the engine and they got the hell out of their. For me I can not take the chance they are just going to steal and then go away. I am not that trusting of people who would do evil. With other souls on board, I can not sit back and pray they will be unharmed. We are all different I respect that. Each has there way of dealing with adversity. Trusting evil people to just steal and not harm Mandi is a leap of faith I could not take.

Yeah that’s why we just avoid the heck out of them. I would definitely feel more comfortable with a gun onboard, but it’s just too much of a risk coming into all these countries with a gun.

@@RiggingDoctor Have your sales receipt, gun safety certificate something that looks official. Let customs officials know you have firearms. At the very worse customs may hold it till you depart depending on their laws. It really is not an issue as long as you have some paperwork and let em know your strapped. Also a couple of high-voltage tasers should always be on board. Be happy, be safe.

Listen to Larry Boles. If you lay down like sailing “wisdom” would “teach” you and let these guys on your boat to take all your things with zero resistance what are you teaching the pirates? Now if you handle it like Larry Boles does by letting a round or two fly into their boat hull at a couple hundred yards what is he teaching them? Sailing “wisdom”. You are encouraging and perpetuating pirates by “teaching” others how to react to them... Be honest now, did the pirates sponsor this video?!

I know sailors friends who were robbed by pirates in the Caribbean Panama Colombia zone. They complied with demands to give all their electroinics, cameras etc and live to tell the tale. Off Columbia and Panama, for example, cruisers say tp stay 200 miles offshore. These are pirate mafias that station large mother ships very far off shore that survey the radar and then send off smaller open boats to attack crusing boats as they pass within range. Pirates are most prevalent where law and order donnot reign in the country, and again these are mafias, not starving fishermen. They don't steal food, they steal stuff they can fence. It's good to give them whatever they want and that might be the end of it, but there's is always the option they cast you overboard ort kill you to steal the whole boat if they fell it's worth it, so do be mindful. These are thieves, outlaws and your life is not important to them. Your suggestion to have little or no electronic postion broadcasting is good for stealth mode. Best is to just cruise so far off their path, out of their range that they miss your passingby.

@@connannbarbarin3033 I seriously doubt that the captain of that TV was worried that the flare might cause his boat to burn to the waterline and sink out from under him. The idiot in the video showed no understanding of flare guns and only luck prevented him from burning himself seriously. A burning flare put aboard your boat is NOT nothing. Shades of Smoke on the Water. You know, where "some stupid with a flaregun burned the place to the ground." Except that there is not likely to be ground under a pirate's boat.

@@jerrymiller276 flare from a flare gun is a terrible fire starter. It burns for 6 sec and it is a back of it that burns. Flare from a flare gun wont even burn you. It will hit you, bruise you and bounce off you. It will ignite only gasoline or extremely extremely dry and fine kindling. It will not burn down a boat. Even if you hit a pirate's boat (unlikely with something so inaccurate as a flare gun at any distance pass 10 meters ) and it starts a fire this fire would be very easy to put out and it wont course any significant distraction.

@@connannbarbarin3033 Nevertheless, I WILL DEFEND myself and my family to the best of my ability and the equipment that I have available. If you carry firearms on a boat, you strictly limit where you can go. Firing flares seems preferable to just giving up and letting pirates have it all their way. Saying "that won't work" without even trying is not an acceptable solution. That won't work has been a well known refrain throughout history. Then someone comes along and does it anyway. I could always let them get close enough and toss a liter jar of gasoline aboard their boat and THEN fire the flare. It is about fighting with what you have available. You might not win, but going down without trying sucks. I doubt they will let me board their boat and build a fire by conventional means.

You say that firearms are a bad idea because pirates will simply shoot you, but then talk about using swords, axes, and fire-extinguishers to resist an attack. Why would you believe that pirates wouldn't respond with deadly force to your attempting to 'bash in their head' or stab them? Awareness of danger and avoiding it - as you discuss - is something everyone should practice. But it is also important to consider tactics you could employ to discourage or fight off a boarding, or what happens if pirates do manage to board. It is also worth understanding that while some 'pirate' encounters are not much more than a nightime anchorage thief stealing a dinghy engine, that there are also mother-ship based groups that may be more prone to violence or hostage-taking. Firearms are by no means an answer to all issues, and international legalities complicate where one can use them, but it is important to recognize if and where lethal force might be called upon. Best regards

Thank you very much. Very wise and sensible advice. But I cannot imagine the 'last stand' one will have to face when the protocol for a non-confrontation fails and life is threatened... how do one react instinctibely on one's feet? Humanly speaking, there will also be a dilemma of not wanting to hurt anyone potentially grave in one's defence. And even if successful, how do one deal with a pirate disarmed or restrained? Very complicated, I would think. This is a subject that is almost impossible to wrap one's head around when sailing in remoteness. One is a complete sitting duck.

How to deal with piracy: Avoid the shitstorm that is Africa. The distance for your mast lights to go below the horizon is probably around 10 miles or so. The irony is they drive people away with piracy which leads to them being in worse conditions.

Out mast head light is a bulb type that I put an LED bulb into. It doesn’t work well... Our deck nav lights are LED and work great! After having ships say they don’t see us with our mast head lights and instantly seeing us when we click up the deck lights. From that we determined that the masthead light is just too dim to see far away! Hence we always keep the deck lights on.

Our advice is to steer clear of troubled areas and sail around it in safe waters. If your brother is in the navy on anti piracy, then he can tell you what equipment and personnel are needed to defend a boat. It’s a lot more than a single couple with a few guns... Being a sailor means being smart instead of strong. Sail around a fight instead of risking everything needlessly.

Guys, I sailed straight down from the Canaries to Cape Verde, you're way off shore and encountered two ships. I've been sailing around the Cape Verde Islands two years and met many sailors who sailed from all over. No pirate encounters! Fishermen and their nets, yes! I also sailed the Med from the south of France. Stopped in Tanger, Morocco. No pirates! Guarda Civil, Police and cargos, yes. I have been, and know people that have been boarded by pirates, they are called thieves. And this has always happened close to land. The worst pirates are the one charging crazy marina fees in trendy spots where there's a good chance you'll get robbed anyways. The safest places are the one's where there are little to no tourists. Again, I know. Got my dinghy oars stolen at Cape Verde's most popular tourist spot, Santa Maria, Sal. And yes, a shiny new big charter sailboat got boarded right next to mine, robbed at knife point. And me and my boat? Nothing. My boat is not as attractive perhaps, and I made sure to make local friends which greatly helps. Pirate stories are just that, pirate reality is mostly fiction and hearsay.
