The term "The Cat's out of the bag" literally stems from this very thing. The Quartermaster on a ship would enforce discipline and use a flogger called "Cat o' Nine Tails" so named because it had 9 strands and would leave deep cuts like a Cat. Typically the "Cat" would be kept in a bag tied to the Mast. So when the Cat was taken out of the bag, everyone on the ship knew someone was getting flogged. The Quartermaster was 2nd only to the captain and also decided how loot was divided up, he even decided how much the Captain got.

Johnny Depp at his best ❤my favorite character.... Ever

Yay more Pirates and Maple! The way they filmed these is so interesting if you ever watch a behind the scenes. This one is definitely creepy/gross (yet creative) with the sea creature-fused people. And the toe nail-biting scene (gags) which was Depp's idea. Depp improvised his lines a lot and so was the ending to capture the real "surprise" reaction faces. The wheel scene was hard to film (the cast hated it) and the ball made of bones was also hard for the, they literally were rolled down a hill and swung back and forth. The cast often had to spend a lot of time wet, whether swim in freezing water/boating to a location to film or getting hosed down like Depp in the Kraken fight scene. Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) heavily inspired Depp's portrayal of Sparrow. Keira Knightley got so good at sword fighting in this film that the stunt choreos were impressed (she did her own sword fighting stunts), and at one point in the shoot her mom and herself were shipwrecked at sea and had to be rescued. She also had already cut her hair so it's just extensions in this one and short in the next film. The cast also had to evacuate during hurricane Wilma. Norrington has an interesting character development. Also I agree that Tia Dalma is so pretty, even though she doesn't have clean teeth lol. Maybe it's the accent or her mystique. Love your reaction, this movie definitely has the gross and creepy vibes. Omg you know Old Greg, did you know he's the host of Great British Bake Off? haha

The Wallace & Gromit reference is so hillarious and accurate at the same time. The henchman has the same regional accent as Wallace, a Yorkshire accent.

The Pearl was keel-hauled, where they beached the ship at high tide and pegged her down so the crew could scrape barnacles, replace rotten boards, and give the keel a fresh coat of pitch before shoving her back out at the next high tide. Jack's running is based on him being used to the swaying of the ocean aboard a boat. If you notice when he's on a ship he walks and runs normally. Johnny Depp improvised the "Jar of Dirt" ditty in the moment, which is why everyone looks confused.
@BigDamnArtist2 ай бұрын
Keel-hauling was a punishment where they strap you to a rope run under the ship and drag you around the ship, generally to cut sliced up by anything growing on the hull, nearly drown, or bash your head against the ocean or ship. Beaching for the purpose of repairs/cleaning was called Careening.

"cat's out of the bag" actually was a term referring to the whip, a "cat o' nine tails." It's a bit of a double entendre with the secret that Bootstrap and Will are related and the fact that the whip has been brought out, so someone needs to get lashed.

According to the United Libraries Exhibits website, 'the origin of "The cat's out of the bag" is unclear, but early uses first appeared in print around 1760, 33 years after the first edition of "Les Chats" was first published in France.' That being said, Pirates of the Carribean takes place around the golden age of Piracy, which generally ended fifty years prior to the publication of "Les Chats", so points off for adding modern slang in an era when it wasn't primarily used.

I love that we’ve always had a fascination/fear of octopus and then it turns out they’re the most alien-like non-mammalian thing on the planet (that we know of) that’s also highly intelligent. It’s such a different kind of intelligence that we have to marvel at it.

I find it hilarious and awesome that Bill Nighy was Davy Jones, as well as Viktor from Underworld, Rufus Scrimgeour from Harry Potter, and Howard Clifford from Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. Quite the interesting career for that guy. The fact that that "I've got a jar of dirt" singing taunt was completely improv'd by Johnny Depp is also hilarious to me.
