@@gabrielgama5146 No problem. According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, the etymology is this: ORIGIN late 17th century (as a verb, earliest in the form savee): via West African pidgin English, from Portuguese or Spanish saber 'know', from Latin sapere be wise (see sapient). I would imagine that Savoir also derives from the same Latin root.

A mutineer is someone who commits mutiny, aka rebel against the commanding officer of a vessel/regiment and take command themselves for their own interest. In that respect, there is movie from the 90s called The Mutineers of the Bounty (or maybe just Bounty), retracing a real story of a British ship, HMS Bounty whose crew rebelled in the Pacific to stay around Tahiti and not suffer the voyage home. They finally decided to get back to England. Those wooden vessels were produced quite fast, about 6 months work for a working arsenal. Nowadays, recreating such a vessel is much longer because workers are very few to know that craftmanship and also they don't have the materials or the funds to do it fast. The Hermione frigate in France was recreated over 20 years of work and now will likely become ruin because no one wants to pay the maintenance ! In Antiquity, the galleys fleets could be built very fast, in a couple of months, a working arsenal with ressources and funds could produce about 250 ships ! "Savy" must come from the French "Vous savez..." (You know...) just like "Parley" comes from the French Parler (to speak).

Pirates does not have much violence because they were not going for an R (adults only) rating. Remember Pirates of the Caribbean started as ride at Disneyland, which they decided to make into a movie, and ended up becoming a movie franchise. They wanted families to see these movies, so they showed very little blood, making Pirates the first PG13 movie made by Disney.

18:20 Well, since you asked..... Dauntless, in the movie, was a first-rate ship of the line - The biggest and most powerful warship around, equivalent to a superdreadnought battleship a hundred years ago or to a modern supercarrier. The only first-rate that survives to this day is HMS Victory, which was built a little while after the Pirates movies are set, but not super long - Jack Sparrow, if he lived to die of old age, would very possibly have lived to see Victory come off the slipway (If I'm doing the math right, the 5th movie should take place about 7 years before Victory was laid down). Victory took almost six years from starting construction to floating for the first time (her keel was laid 23 July 1759, and she was floated out of drydock 7 May 1765). That said, about three years of that was just sitting out partially built to let the wood dry - Doing that was normal if the ship wasn't urgently needed, but Victory was especially not urgently needed since the war she was being built for ended, so she stayed that way extra long (which probably helped her survive to see the 21st century). So, it's somewhere around three years of actual work to build Victory, and probably about the same for Dauntless. Victory also used about 6000 trees to build, not to mention how many more have been used to fix her over the centuries (especially given she was basically entirely rotten at the end of her time outside of the drydock that's her permanent home now). These ships were massive for the time - They were less like ships with guns attached and more like an artillery battalion with some sails on top, and when they sailed into port they were probably the tallest thing in the city. Of course, modern ships dwarf them, but in-universe a ship like Dauntless would really be a tremendously impressive, and intimidating, vessel to find on the high seas.

The only problem I have with this otherwise excellent movie is the corset nonsense. Tight-lacing was *impossible* until the mid to late 19c when metal eyelets were invented. Even then it was incredibly rare. Corsets (and stays, which is what Elisabeth would have been wearing) were worn because they were an excellent support garment. Women of all classes wore them through a period of three hundred years. They were not torture devices. (Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.)

Actually, turning a boat upside down should trap air - but there's two things to remember. 1) You won't be able to see where you're going, so you'll need to make sure you are going the right direction before you leave the shore. 2) While the air is trapped under the boat, the boat will try to surface and you'll have to hold it carefully upside-down and hope that you have enough weight to walk along the bottom. Neither of these is a guarantee in deeper water. A sailing vessel like those portrayed required some depth.

14:50 "What is a mutineer?" Ah. Well that's a good question. See, the root word is "mutiny." A mutineer is someone who has committed mutiny, which means, in order to properly answer the question, "What is a mutineer?" one must first answer the question, "What is mutiny?" Mutiny is the word for an act of open rebellion against the proper authorities, especially by soldiers or sailors, against the officers supervising them. Tales of mutiny are _very_ popular in stories about pirates. It's an act of mutiny when the crew removes the captain from command and either kills him, sets him adrift in a lifeboat, or maroons him somewhere. This makes them all mutineers. So what they're showing us in this scene is that, at one time, Jack was Captain of the _Black Pearl,_ and the crew mutinied and removed him from command. This made them all mutineers.
