Just wanna point out a thing about Pac-Man on the 2600. It's not a great port but it was designed to be played on a 70s/80s CRT TV, and the flickering actually isn't really apparent there due to phosphor persistence (stuff put onto a CRT screen sticks around for a little while), it makes the ghosts look kind of transparent. A lot of older games do cool things with their visuals that only work on a CRT across RF or composite cables and you don't see it on a modern TV or under emulation (unless your emulator has filter support and you can then emulate phosphor persistence and colour bleeding)
@jakeborunda81257 жыл бұрын
Gunrun I remeber the first time I say that version as a kid. I had no idea it was related to the arcade game lol I was too young to know any better at the time
@frankschneider61567 жыл бұрын
+Gunrun Of course is the flickering apparent on a CRT TV. I agree that the port is playable and by far not as bad as everybody says today, but the visuals were really bad, even for it's time and the flickering WAS bad. Space Invaders showed quite well, how so many "sprites" (I know the 2600 didn't have any) could be handled without flickering. Not talking about the absurd color palette.
@wilkiedriver7 жыл бұрын
The flicker is still very apparent on CRTs plus look at what the extra memory does for Ms. Pac Man. Atari went cheap and a lot of people complained back then.
@neoasura7 жыл бұрын
At the time, people loved this port. I remember me and my family playing it for hours. And everyone I knew that had an Atari had this game and didn't mind it. No one expected exact arcade ports back then. It's only got a bad rep now due to the trendy Pac-Man Atari hate wagon of recent years.
@frankschneider61567 жыл бұрын
+neoasura I wouldn't completely agree to that either. Yes the game is playable and you can have fun with it. No doubt, but when it came out, everybody knew that Atari had done a pretty bad job and people WERE disappointed. E.g. Space Invaders was also by far not 100% Arcade perfect, but nobody complained as the looks was well done and it played great, same for Asteroids, Battlezone or Centipede , while the outstanding Berzerk was as close as a port could get on the 2600, same with Frogger. Yeah the 2600 seemed to not have the capability for perfect ports, but with PacMan it was obvious that it could have been way better if they had at least tried. Doesn't mean it's unplayable crap, just means it could have been a lot better. Just look at Mrs. Pac-Man, Pac-Man jr or the homebrew Pac-Man 4K, which is as Arcade perfect as you can get on the 2600 with a 4k module, or the even more superior homebrew Pac-Man 8k, although of course on a 8k cartridge. Atari could have produced a much better port if they wanted to, but what does one expect from a company that produces more Pac-Man cartridges than consoles had been sold. It as a weak, although playable port and everyone knew that, even back in 1982. Doesn't mean what they released can not be played and had fun with. I agree, that the bad rep it has is partially undeserved. As a game it works, because the gameplay itself is still more or less intact, but as port it is abysmal and could have been WAY better (see Pac-Man 4k or Ms Pac-Man).

GBA always felt like a "let's cash on nostalgia and poor ports" machine. The system was capable of full 3D graphics so the fact that Sonic and Earthworm Jim run so badly on it is proof that the devs were just lazy.
@VOAN7 жыл бұрын
The problem with ports on GBA is that when the publisher want to made those for the GBA, none of the original developers came back for the project. For example Mortal Kombat Advance was port by one team: Virtucraft but the Super NES and Sega Genesis versions of Ultimate MK3 were handled by many developers: Sculptor's Software, Acclaim, Arena, Avalanche Software, and Williams Entertainment with Midway constantly directing the ports too but the GBA version lack that kind of quality team up because Virtucraft made the port by themselves and with no direction or support from Midway. They were simply told to just port the game with no regards to quality. Beat the game and you don't see Ed Boon's name anywhere on the credits like you would the console ports, not even on the Special Thanks portion where his name usually appeared.

Wasn't the NES version of Shinobi an unlicensed game? I read in 'Console Wars' about Nintendo suing Tengen because of all the bootleg games they were bringing out, but one thing I've never really understood is Sega's take on all this. Wouldn't they have wanted to sue Tengen as well for converting their arcade titles without permission to the system of their (at the time) most bitter rival?
@theghhostface7 жыл бұрын
That's more or less exactly what they did
@roxposting6 жыл бұрын
here's the thing. Tengen was actually a division of Atari at that time, which in turn had been purchased by Namco after Warner Bros. sold it off, since it wasn't profitable at all. Namco got the license for Shinobi from Sega, and since Sega itself really didnt want any of its games to have official releases on the NES (especially since they had a competing console at the time), Tengen finished it and put it out as an unlicensed title. one interesting to note is the fact that Tengen actually _did_ make licensed games at their earliest points of existence, but after they were able to successfully bypass Nintendo's security lockout on the NES by literally getting the code for it from the US Copyright Office, they became exclusively an unlicensed developer/publisher.
@CarozQH6 жыл бұрын

I've tried to get into Atari 2600 multiple times, but I just can't. Maybe it's a generational thing, but in my opinion, at-home gaming didn't legitimately start until the NES/Famicom. Graphics before the NES rely too much on your imagination-- if I wanted that, I'd read a book.

If it was one thing I never experienced with the GC version, they were control delays (as I was never bothered by the infamous button swap, which came from the fact that I never owned an NES let alone any MM NES games, though I did play one at a cousins house briefly).

ClexYoshi Those were the best examples you could come up with? There's a lot worse ports out there. At least those were still playable. The fact that the SNES could even run Alpha was an accomplishment.
@retroboy-fh1ji7 жыл бұрын
ClexYoshi you should talk about ninja gaiden trilogy or another example on SNES instead of insult the (probably) biggest 2d technical achievement on the system (if you don't count smw2 that used the Super FX chip 2)

Pacman: warp tunnels may have a simple explanation: the arcade version plays in portrait-mode, but the VCS/2600 only supports landscape-mode and given the limited time available for orientation-compensation the porter only turned the sprites 90°. (if he had even less time, then he might have had to make due with telling the players to put the TV on its side and have them play it in the original orientation.)

Airsoft. Real guns don't have to say it is not a toy on the side. lol If you pause at 31:55 you can read the slide

Sonic on GBA actually lead Stealth (who also ported Knuckles intro Sonic 1, and later half of the team behind the mobile ports of Sonic 1 and 2) to make his own proof of concept port of the first zone of the game to the GBA.

I just thought of an infamously bad piss poor port for the modern era. Bayonetta on the PS3. Cover this in the next episode regarding shitty ports.

Good lord, even Kamiya himself hates that port (then again, he also hated the Okami Wii port, which was FAR from broken in my experience).
@dontegraves50517 жыл бұрын
That game barely functions on PS3. My issue was always the very inconsistent framerate and how jarring it could get. Sony consoles have always had issues with stable framerates. The PS3 is the platform to NEVER play Bayonetta on.

"Sword of Sodan" on the Sega Genesis is an abysmally bad port.
@Aztyph7 жыл бұрын
I was actually about to recommend this myself. I saw the original version on the Amiga, and holy crap, the difference between the two are like night and day.
@masterlee19887 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Sword of Sodan is one of the worst games out there for Genesis, shocked at how bad it was.
@yellowblanka60587 жыл бұрын
Apart from smaller characters, less colors and crappier sound, the game itself is equally crappy on both platforms. Seriously, the game looks so monotonous and mediocre I don't know how anybody could enjoy it.
@masterlee19887 жыл бұрын
Yellowblanka The Amiga version at least kept you to the left side of the screen which it was designed for. The Genesis version had you on both sides and the game really wasn't made for that so it made the whole game worse because of it. There are those who liked the Amiga version funny enough, but the Genesis version is heavily despised and for good reasons.

Sword of sodan was the first game I played on my new Amiga, i was gobsmacked how much better it looked and sounded than anything on my old c64. A mate of mine went out and bought an Amiga after seeing it. It really showed off the Amigas potential, although gameplaywise it was average and quite unfair in places (`beware of traps` followed by random death for example) but the bit where you fight the wizard with lightning flashing, thunder roaring and epic music playing really was a sight to behold at the time. I bought the megadrive version thinking it would be even better, dear god was I wrong, how on earth did they screw it up so badly? Awful graphics, dreadful sound and gameplay far worse than the by now quite old Amiga version. What I dont get is that the megadrive is technically on par with the Amiga and yet the port looked more like an ST game. Awful, awful port and a waste of my hard earned £60 at the time.
