Red Auerbach loved Pete Maravich, that's the reason why he brought him to the Celtics in 1980, unfortunately Pete's knees had passed away at that time.

Red admired Pete's dedication and skills. And Pete admired how Red built the celts into a lasting power and treated his players well.

If only Pistol Pete had health on his side, but I notice his team piled on the minutes with him which finally led up to his body finally giving out halfway through that 1977-'78 season. Shows how much they truly relied on him to get them to be relevant as playoff contenders. Special basketball talent, regardless. Only wish he hadn't retired a year earlier than he should have or else he'd be looking at his first championship at the end of his career (1981 Celtics). Makes me wonder what kind if games he would've had if the 3-point line had been fully integrated in the NBA upon the merger with the ABA? Guess we wouldn't be talking about Kobe's 81-point game nearly as much, heh... ;-)

Pistol missed the top basketball goal of his life by one year. But in his life after basketball, he was reborn. He died playing basketball in a pick-up game ... with a complete life.

Arguably the greatest professional basketball coach (Auerbach) with one of the greatest college/pro basketball players (Maravich) in one of the greatest college basketball arenas (Cole Field House at University of Maryland)...absolutely awesome. How great is this? Thanks for posting!!!
@rockvilleraven3 жыл бұрын
Red Auerbach had an apartment in DC and the Celtics had an office for him when he was down there. The Baltimore Bullets did play a few games a year at Cole and the crowds were better and that's why owner Abe Pollin moved his team to Landover, MD at the Capital Centre in 1973.

I loved these "Red On Roundball" segments as a kid. I always learned something from them (usually that I couldn't do what they were talking about), but it was really fun to see the different players in a more relaxed setting talking about fundamentals. The game--in my humble, "old man" opinion-- has suffered because of the three-point shot and the "Euro-step," which is basically sanctioned traveling because it isn't done correctly--the way Jerry West and Oscar Robertson did it. The beauty of the game, playmaking, has really been taken over by power and long-range scoring.

If Pete Maravich had stayed in the NBA longer he would've been a hell of a three point shooter. But unfortunately, he left the league a year after the NBA adopted it. (1980) I think he would've led the league in three point shooting.

Fundamentals. Pure and simple. Yeah it's great when you can do showboat moves, which there's nothing with doing, but far too many players simply don't have sound fundamentals. I'd rather a team risk being "boring" with fundamental basketball and win consistently, than have a team which puts on a show but gets their nuts handed to them on a skewer night after night.
@orange_cat Жыл бұрын
Pistol Pete made it a point to put on a show and that's why people love him. And the show didn't get in the way of insane numbers, I think it improved them, but regular humans should not try this wizardry.
@oldgoat142 Жыл бұрын

They were well on their way to the playoffs in the 1977/78 season, but in January Pete injured his knee and all went downhill from there. They barely missed the postseason - just one win short. That was one of the main reasons for the relocation to Utah.
