The roof pitching stage of building an extension in the UK
Design and Planning:
Before the actual construction begins, the design of the pitched roof is finalized. This would usually have been determined during the architectural design and planning stage. Factors like roof pitch angle, type of roofing material, and location of valleys, hips, and ridges are decided.
Preparation of the Site:
Ensure the walls or structures supporting the roof are completed and secured.
Set up scaffolding or other safe access systems to work at height.
Setting Out and Marking:
The location of the main structural timbers, like rafters and ridge boards, is marked out.
Installation of Wall Plates:
Timber wall plates are fixed onto the top of the walls. These act as the base on which rafters will sit and provide a level surface and anchoring points.
Ridge Board Placement:
The main horizontal timber, the ridge board, is positioned and secured. This runs along the peak of the pitched roof.
Installing Rafters:
Rafters are the sloping timbers that give the roof its pitched shape. They are fixed to the wall plates at the bottom and join the ridge board at the top.
Depending on the design, there might be common rafters, hip rafters, jack rafters, and valley rafters.
Bracing and Strengthening:
Once the primary rafter structure is in place, additional timbers or braces are added for strength and stability. Purlins might be placed to support the rafters, especially if the span is significant.
Roof Decking:
Once the timber frame is in place and secure, a layer of decking, often made of plywood or OSB (oriented strand board), is fixed to the rafters. This provides a solid base on which roofing materials, like shingles or tiles, will be laid.
Weatherproofing:
Depending on the region and expected weather conditions, a layer of waterproofing or underlayment might be added on top of the decking and beneath the final roofing material.
Roof Covering:
The chosen roofing material (tiles, slates, metal sheets, etc.) is then laid over the prepared surface, starting from the eaves (bottom edge) and working upwards.
Finishing Details:
Features like fascias, soffits, and guttering are added. Additionally, if there are any dormer windows, skylights, or vents, these would be installed or finalized at this stage.
Inspection and Quality Check:
Ensure that the roof is securely fixed, and there are no gaps or weaknesses. The quality and integrity of the roofing material and installation are verified to prevent leaks or future issues.

In light of the impending recession and the fact that inflation is still far higher than the Fed's 2% target, several of the most prominent market analysts have been expressing their views on how terrible they believe the next downturn will be and how far stocks may have to fall. I need advice on what investments to make because I'm attempting to create a portfolio for my children that will at least be $850k in value.

I've been talking to a coach or a long now, mostly because I lack the knowledge and energy to deal with these ongoing market circumstances. I made more than $220K during this slump, demonstrating that there are more aspects of the market than the average individual is aware of. Having an investing counselor is now the best line of action, especially for those who are close to retiring.

Dan's face at 0:24 is hilarious, it's a definite FFS moment. His square is simple but so clever. I've stopped using a mitre saw on roofs now, I've got a big Bosch 12" mitre saw which I always used but I just feel it's the wrong tool for the job. I've gone back to doing everything with a skillsaw and it's definitely quicker and i'm not swinging big timbers around all the time. Let's be honest, roofs don't have to be cut with millimetre accuracy. I think that the British Standard for tolerances on timber structural members is something like +or- 10mm.
@Roger-Bisby1

Hi guys, big fan of the channel. Can you do a video on oil fired boilers - the government want to phase them out. People are getting quotes for heat pumps for the older properties around the £45k mark. We are going to replace our old oil fired boiler soon as the modern ones are 30% more efficient. Am worried about the cut off date, keep hearing different views.

Would putting insulation to underside of wall plate really matter or insulation above the ceiling joists be sufficient ?
@SJWardBuilders
@SJWardBuilders Жыл бұрын
In this instance we put 100mm between ceiling joists and 300mm on top. It depends on building control and when permission was granted as the goal post constantly move! To be sure check your plans and confirm with the building inspector! Hope this helps regards Sam.

Dans Square and app are great but they only work if the wall plate and ridge run parallel with each other get and bow in the the wall plate or where the ridge is bolted to the wall and it’s back to the drawing board lol .
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark You make an interesting point and in previous videos Daniel has emphasised the importance of getting the wall plate parallel with the opposite wall plate or, in this case, making sure it is paraller with the house wall. Often when brickies bed the plate on they are not able to take any deviations out of the plate. We all know that timber is rarely straight but it is often possible to bring it into line with a couple of ratcher straps. If, for some reason you have to live with the discrepancy you simply have to do a bit of plus of minus work on the rafters but the square can still be used. It it the measurement on the app which has to be adjusted. Failing that snap a chalk line and run a circular saw along the plate to get it straight before you start. We had a video showing James King straightening out a small bow in the wall plate and some people commented that it really didn't matter if the wall plate was out by 10mm. Clearly they were bricklayers. That is one reason why carpenters are often happier to fix their own plate. If you get it right you can cut all the rafters the same in one go and that makes a huge difference.

swabs7004 A lot of people watching these videos don't appreciate that a builder is hired to build what is on the drawing. Details such as vaulted ceilings should be discussed between client and architect. On some jobs the builder is asked to design and build but if not somebody it means somebody else has been well paid to do the drawing and get it through building regs. It is a fool's errand to start suggesting changes or improvements.
