Pixel 7 Pro & Pixel Watch: My Honest Opinion

Great review Mark! When the Pixel Phone/Watch was released, you were the first person I thought of as I looked forward to the reviews that were coming. I always appreciate your candid, honest, yet upbeat assessment of products and their real-world usability. As a tried and true Pixel fan, I completely agree with your conclusions about the Pixel Watch -- a good first gen try. I won't be getting this one (I'm not a first gen user typically) but I will be curious to see what Google does with the watches in future iterations. Thanks!

I agree with your points about the watch. However, I own both the Pixel watch and Samsung GW 5 Pro. I prefer the Pixel Watch because of its connectivity and FitBit's inclusiveness. Samsung Health is very isolated (helped only by Strava). Overall Samsung Health isn't as good as Fitbit for tracking sports, working with other platforms (like Peloton) and sleep tracking analysis. I'll continue to enjoy my Pixel Watch which is far more comfortable, quicker and easier to read until the Pixel Watch 2 arrives (and yes I too hope it will be a 45mm model with a bigger battery).

I recently got the new samsung s22 and now looking to get my first smartwatch and thats most likely going to be the watch 5. Since i switched to samsung google has made great efforts to keep up and now are on the same level as samsung in the phone perspective. And for their first watch the pixel watch doesnt look too bad. So when i change my phone the next time it wouldnt be weird if its going to be a google one and with that maybe one of their watches too

I don't get why everyone is complaining about pixel 6 pro fingerprint scanner. I bought it in February 2022 and till now ot works just perfect, never had any bugs or anything.

I'd say in most cases it's user error. They probably didn't enroll their fingerprint correctly.

I agree with most about what you said of what the phone, but your watch analysis is pretty wrong. I have all the features turned on and I use the watch all day and I get through my entire work day with sleep tracking always on display on tilt to wake off and the watch literally last all day and all night. I wake up every morning with 20% battery left. Anybody saying the pixel watch battery is less than 24 hours is misleading the masses! But you are accurate about the performance. It is very smooth.

We had huge problems with overheating with the pixel 5. I think I'll give the pixel one last shot with the 7 pro

I've had pretty good battery life with the Pixel watch. If I set the AOD to on and the TTW to off, I can use it all day, track an activity and wear it to bed for sleep tracking. I'll wake up with about 15 to 20% left. If I turn the AOD off and TTW on, I'll wake up with between 30 to 35% left after tracking my sleep. Both are pretty acceptable.

I really enjoy using my new pixel 7 pro. The only thing that could be better is the display's colors. They're not as outstanding as Samsung's. Else the entire phone is really good. It feels faster than my galaxy s22 ultra

Anyone here notice the relatively poor cellular and data reception on the Pixel 7/Pro? I really wanted to upgrade my 5 to the 6, but the 6 had the same issues according to Reddit. It's been a common theme with Pixels since at least 3rd Gen.

I'll give you my honest opinion. I didn't sync with a pixel watch. But a Samsung S22. It took a while to connect with my phone.

Ya either ceramic or Sapphire even stainless steel should have been used on the camera band rather than soft aluminum. It's the only thing that touches the surface when put down like a bumper, so it's gonna wear the fastest.

I seriously hope reviewers keep the same energy when reviewing the Apple Watches and Samsung Watch releases from here on out. The Pixel Watch definitely can get you 18 hours with everything enabled and has the same fast charging to match the series 8 but that's not an issue when recommending the Apple Watch. Both the Watch 5 and Pixel Watch have 1.2 inch displays on the base versions but the bezel narrative is only being repeated for the Pixel Watch.

The Pixel watch is my favorite wearable ever. It's comfortable, it looks beautiful, it delivers notifications consistently (cough, get your act together Samsung, cough), and the battery is good enough to get me from morning to bedtime without a problem. I don't use sleep tracking, so that's enough for me. I would recommend it without hesitation to anyone who wants the closest Android experience to the Apple watch.

Question, on the pixel 6 it had some square/round icons.... the pixel 7 has completely round icons. I like the style better of the square and roundish icons. How can I do this on my pixel 7? Thanks

You would need to install a launcher. I have Nova Launcher on my S22 Plus, but I'm looking to get the P7P as well as keep my iPhone.

I had both the P7 and 7 Pro. Loved the P7 size, flat screen and the 90hz.... BUT... I did not like the smaller battery. I don't know if I had a defective unit, but battery would drain really fast! The 7 Pro is very fancy coming from the 5a. It's a tad bit bigger than the P7 but it's no biggie for me cuz I have big hands. The screen is beautiful! I don't mind the 120hz refresh rate. I don't really like curved edges but the 7 Pro's curved edges remind me of the LG G8 I had. Which is not bad and it grew on me. The P7 speakers are loud but barely any bass. The 7 Pro's speakers have a balance of treble and bass in my opinion. But the battery life on the 7 Pro lasted longer than the P7 and so I'm sticking with the 7 Pro.

People coming from the Fitbit ecosystem and have used Pixel phones, could be more interested in the Pixel watch because of the Fitbit health tracking. They may overlook the shortcomings you mentioned.

I've been trying to replace my Gear S3 LTE Classic for a while now because the 6 year old battery's health had degraded. The watch wasn't lasting a day anymore. Unfortunately, Samsung didn't have anything new that seemed like an upgrade to my 6 year old watch, so I patiently waited for the Pixel watch. Disappointment would be an understatement 🤦🏿. After the Google event, I was motivated to just search for an OEM replacement battery for my Gear S3. I watched a few videos on how to install the battery, and what do you know..... my watch is back to life. Looks like I'll be keeping my watch for another 6 years, especially since the "new" Android watches barely have exciting new features. The fact that the tech in my 2016 watch is still very revelant today, says a lot about the state of Android watches.

This is where I think tech reviewers are unrealistic. Every year can't be a complete big redesign for new phones. I have the Pixel 7 and I prefer the new aluminum rails on the sides and camera bar. Makes it feel more premium than the Pixel 6 series. The fingerprint sensor on the 7 is still pretty garbage especially with a screen protector on. To the point I turned it off. Face unlock works well except in dark environments. Call quality is the biggest upgrade as is connectivity with 5g and Bluetooth. All are excellent. With the Pixel watch I saw it in person on Saturday at my local T-Mobile store. And it looks and feels premium. Super bright and seemed to be very responsive. I'll definitely be getting it soon. I've seen several say that did get a day out of it. Which is my issue again with tech reviewers there's no consistency. Most praises Apple watches that gets only a day. If it's garbage for Google then it's garbage for Apple. I know my Apple Watch 3 only got a day. And while it would've been nice having longer battery life, I kept it a while because it felt premium and worked well. I'd feel the same with the Pixel watch.

People keep saying the watch is small however it always looks the right size. The way a real watch is supposed to fit with a bit of the band showing on each end of the face. I think we’ve just become used to the chunky calculator look of the Apple Watch or giant g shock watches. That aside, I agree that it is not a very good smart watch.

Google Pixel 7 is a great improvement over the 6, poorer speaker performance is not that important, but great camera, smooth animations and bugs fixed makes Pixel 7 a vote for best Android phone of the year. Pixel Watch is a Okay start, but too small for men.

This has nothing to do with the products themselves, and everything to do with Apple as a marketing powerhouse... even compared to Google. Consumers still view Pixels like tools, and iPhones are more like luxury fashion accessories. People are emotionally invested in Apple products. I think Google is onto something with Material You, and rethinking what the Pixel can be... But it's going to take a hell of a lot of work to carve out a consumer niche like Apple's.

I've never noticed this issue personally. The night photos when night vision is enabled are superior to many phones, and the day photos look great to me. Only issue for me is the video isn't good at night.

Uhh... That Pixel watch.... It's just about bigger than a pixel, so the name suits it. Wow this is the most feminine watch I've ever seen, not the least for its tiny size. It looks actually ridiculous on your man-sized wrists and hands. The white band just accentuates that further. The all glass design... Another huge bummer. What were they thinking!? Did their focus groups have a single male in it, I wonder.
