This really inspires me. I do pixel art, and I was worried that my methods were really dumb. But you do the same stuff I do, like on the fly changes, and experimenting, and almost creating the design on the go, so it really makes me feel better about how I go about making pixel art.

Wow this looks great. I'm looking to get into pixel art myself for the first time, but I've got a big question. What canvas size should be used for characters in pixels? What about backgrounds? I suppose you can do anything (unless programmers suggest a certain size), but I'm looking for something like this, enough pixels for details, while still remaining pixelly. Thanks!

+Disco Machine Hi, Thanks! For each game the size of the character and the background is different. In this case, I use canvas 64x64 canvas for the character, and 256x192 for background. then the programmer expands the graphic by 4x in Unity.

Do you save the silhouette before you shade it? So you can animate it easier. That's what i do.

Smeekie Yes the image will fit with game maker. The image working probably and not being too big has to so with the size of the monitor. It has nothing to do with game maker.

Hi you can do it by two ways 1st is using the navigator: go to window / navigator 2nd way, and probably it's the one he is using in this video is by going to: window / Arrange / New Window for "(your file name)" hope this helped someone :)

Why do you keep switching back and forth? Also, how long did this piece take you? How long would it take to animate a sprite of this size for lets say a walking animation? Have you ever considered doing a video showing the process of creating an animation of these sprites?

When working with pixels it can be hard to get the artests imagination with limited. You almost work with abstract feelings. And yes this would be hard to animate with all the fine shading. You would want to make sytem you save the first iteration of silhouettes to adjust frames with minimal colors and shades. It's much faster as well. Cheers.
