Actually just got back into Napoleon. Usually play Darthmod but thought I'd give the Great War a go this time and I have to say - it is amazing. It's pretty sad that the best WWI RTS I've ever played is a free mod for a decade old game!

The battle represents a great battle fought for Germany in 1813 Napoleon army was out numbered, 4 army was converging on him from all sides, Napoleon had no opened but to form a defensive circle and make the enemy fight every step they took, ultimately Napoleon ordered a retreat after 3 days of fighting. In this video the French did a great last stand.

6 healthy cav on the Prussian side, with mediocre micro could very well broke through French defenses right there. A veteran cav player (Maybe a hardcore cav based faction) could easily broke that last stand with 6 cav. I could not believe how is he not using any of his cav right until the last min of the battle.

One thing I don't like about TW sometimes, is that "hill camping" Etc, is only viable because the only objective is to kill the enemy. In reality, you would just leave them on the hill, and attack elsewhere to force them off of it. Alternatively, lure them with a small seperated force that they think they can overwhelm, e.g. Austerlitz.

From a reality standpoint... Being a "Hill Camper" is what you should be. Find the high ground and hold it. Not staying on the hill is why that French Army on the Left died so quickly without doing much damage.

What happened in the last part of the battle is a shame for the player who was in Prussia, it’s really a shame, if I had his contact I would really write to him that he is a degenerate, having so much cavalry he could demolish these French with one big charge.

I hate the 'Fog of War' in NTW3; the argument people have for it is that "YOU have to scout", but generals didn't handle scouting in that sense, nonetheless with squadrons or even companies of cavalry (scouting was usually done with 2-6 men and there were A LOT of them)-both sides would typically have a good idea of each other's forces and the dispositions before a pitched battle commenced. That's why I like it more without the silly 'Fog of War', it becomes more like chess with less micromanagement (with cavalry units appearing randomly out of the fog) and more tactical. IF they insist that the player [commander] has to do the scouting, at least have it so it's based on 'Sight of View', and not 'Fog of War'....
