We don't get the opportunity to do versus videos as often as I'd like, but we're ready to try and change that in the coming months. The truth is, with review units it is pretty difficult to catch two interesting devices in the office at the same time. Right now we have quite a few around, so we want to take full advantage of that fact and begin with probably the most-requested versus video of all: the Pixelbook vs. Pixel Slate.

Awesome, was waiting for this long requested video. I purchased the Slate and Pixelbook within weeks of each other. I was using the Slate (which I had first) and started using the Pixelbook for some grad school work. What an amazing experience. I sold my Slate on Swappa and never looked back. I love the Pixelbook so much, it's easily the best Chromebook experience I've ever had. Can't wait for the 2, and may get another OG Pixelbook if there's another sale.

I guess it could, cause since I said that, I’ve only used my Slate! ha! I only say that cause the keyboard. Even though it’s a great keyboard on the Slate and super easy to type on, it’s not as sturdy as Pixelbook when it’s sitting on your lap. But if you’re looking for something a little lighter weight it’s a great option.

At the end , both devices will give you top notch experience depending on your priorities. as for me, i would be pleased with both, but i would use it on-the-go, so the pixel slate would be my choice. this kind of review could be interesting for google to think how to make the ultimate device getting the best of both.

Very good review. Like you, I own both devices and wouldn't disagree with any of your comparisons. However, the Pixel Slate has grown on me and I find myself reaching for it more than the Pixelbook. I'm probably in the minority on this based on what I have read and watched. I don't typically use either of these device anywhere but a table so the flimsy aspect of the Slate is a non-issue for me. I can see that being an issue for anyone that does enjoy using a laptop on their lap, and in that case would recommend the Pixelbook for sure.

Well , first off I am a new Pixel Slate owner. I have the i5 8 gig 128 gigs of storage model. And your video was made over a yr ago. But I watched it as I was trying to decide what I was going to buy here in April 2020. I am invested in the Google ecosystem. I have an OG Pixel XL phone as well as a Pixel 3 XL for both me and my wife. I have 2 Chromecast and a Google home speaker. So I wanted my next mobile devise to be a Google product. I was in need of a tablet replacement more than anything. I am a musician and my tablet is used in my on stage keyboard rig. I was ready to get the slate for that reason but Google's decision to stop making tablets and the poor reviews I had watched was making me rethink. I checked out the Pixelbook Go (watched your video), but the form wouldn't be good for my uses. I next watched your video above and was thinking I could make do with the Pixelbook as it could be folded into tablet mode. However I would have preferred a detachable. Plus the cost factor came into play. And the good points you made about the Slate stuck in my head. Then Google put the Slate on sale and made it a bundle. I jumped on it and have been completely happy so far. Due to the pandemic I haven't been able to try it on stage but I have tested it in my on stage rig in my garage and it works beautifully. Even running the android software that I use to control my keyboard mix and on stage monitoring. Your videos are great and I appreciate your points of view, but for some the tablet form without a keyboard is the optimum.

I checked out the Pixelbook at Best Buy when it came out. The first thing I noticed was how discolored the palm rests were. I know everyone and their brother had probably had their hands on it. You can wash your hands before every use but this will still be an issue. The material the rests are made of attracts dirt/oil easily.

Would appreciate comments from those whom have used these products. 1) Would like to know if both the UI on both devices the same because I've read about the pixel slate having occasional choppy issues in tablet mode. 2) if the UI of plugged in keyboard and tablet mode are different, can the tablet mode in pixel slate be turned off like the surface pros even without the keyboard being plugged in ? I have the X2 - it's a lovely device. I would say though it is quite heavy as a laptop due to the heavy hinge in the keyboard base. As a tablet it's great but I do find the 2 connectors quite fiddly to reattach. Where the X2 blows the Slate away is value for money - you get the tablet, keyboard and pen for a way lower pirce and I don't think you comprimise much if anything. I'd go for the X2.

No surprise. You usually compare most of the Chromebooks you review with your Pixelbook, so there wasn't anything really new here. You left out the pen though. Do you use it at all on either device? I'm not talking about art and drawing, but actual daily use? Curious, particularly since I'm one of those people who really like a pen enabled device and I really miss not having one on my new HP x360. Don't misunderstand me, you couldn't pry it away from me now that I finally own it. The Pixelbook was my dream machine because of your videos though. The main reasons I didn't go there were the price and the smaller screen. Old eyes are more comfortable with the 14" screen!

I wish someone would talk about using the Slate "solo", i.e., without the physical keyboard and using only the on-screen keyboard. My experience is that the on-screen keyboard is buggy as heck. It is nowhere as good as the Gboard on Android, has lots of strange quirks that come and go depending (apparently) on the phase of the moon, and can be quite annoying and frustrating to use. Still, it's workable for light typing and is my preferred way of using the Slate. (I pull out a LogiTech K380 If I need to do anything long form.)
@WilliamParmley

@Jeremy Martin OMG that's brilliant! I just installed it and will test it out. I just didn't think about that -- you may have just saved me a world of frustration!!! 👍😁😎 (Gboard on my Pixel 2 XL is fantastic.)
@WilliamParmley
@WilliamParmley 5 жыл бұрын
@Jeremy Martin Well, it appears that most of the quirks are inherent in the Slate, independent of the keyboard selected (randomly omitting spaces between words, inserting an extra space after "(" and "-" when glide typing, not auto-capitalizing "i" even though "I'm" will auto-capitalize, Caps Lock doesn't work when glide typing, etc.), The standard Slate keyboards have "Ctrl" and "Alt" keys as well as left and right cursor keys, but Gboard does not. However, Gboard does have "Esc" (long press the "1" key). Overall I think I prefer Gboard and do appreciate your suggestion. For now I have both Gboard and US (PC) Keyboard set up so I can default to Gboard but quickly switch to US (PC) if I need a key combination such as Ctrl-C or Ctrl-Shift-V. I'm still wondering if my Slate is the only one with these quirks; I've never seen anyone else comment on them. (Typed this on my Logitech K380, by the way.)
@WilliamParmley
@WilliamParmley 5 жыл бұрын
@Jeremy Martin I have a Chromebook Pixel (2nd generation) and my Nexus 7 (also 2nd generation) is getting really old, so the Slate was appealing. I still really like it and use it a lot, despite the strange behavior of the keyboard. It's great for reading, watching, and listening, and a little bit of typing. I've added a cheap Amazon stand and a cheap Bluetooth Keyboard to convert it into a "desktop" computer for traveling or longer typing sessions.

I feel like every time you do this video, you essentially say the same thing: keyboard is better on the Pixelbook. However, you fail to compare the Pixel Slate using the Brydge keyboard. This comparison feels more like personal preference. Also, there’s no mention of all the software glitches many have experienced with the Pixel Slate (possibly lower end models). For instance, the responsiveness of the touchscreen is a common one. Updates should help with this, but it seems to be a problem as I write this.

The Pixelbook is better value, but I prefer getting the Pixel Slate due to its tablet form factor. But in the end, I will never get any of these products because they are expensive as hell. Chromebooks are meant to be cheap and simple and the Pixelbook and Slate are nothing like that. They are good Chromebooks but they are still Chromebooks. You can’t really do much with them software-wise. There is no set of optimized pro apps that are made for Chrome OS which makes the Pixel products unappealing for creators. If you want a capable, portable computer and you’re going to do a lot of content creation, you’re better off with a Windows laptop or a MacBook. In fact, an iPad is decent for content creation because it has the optimized pro apps, the hardware, and, quite recently, the software to perform such tasks. Yeah, they’re not the best option, but considering they start at $329, they are very good value. Overall, I just don’t see why you would go for a Pixelbook or Pixel Slate, at least for now. When Chrome OS gets the optimized pro apps support like in Windows, MacOS and iOS, then Chromebooks can compete in more than just the budget market.

For sure. Tbf it was a design point when used as a tablet. I doubt Google would do it again though.

@@bradavon Apple's tablets are smaller and lighter, by virtue of the fact that they aren't laptops that fold over. It's a lot harder to hold a 12in laptop with the keyboard folded over. I actually REALLY like the chunky bottom bezel because it gives me a place to hold the device in portrait mode! That said, what you said isn't false by any means... they were big for a laptop when the Pixelbook came out!

The Pixel Book screen is about 50 bits brighter but has less color accuracy so it looks more washed out. You notice this in the review if you compare the sky in the top left of the desktop. The sunset on the Slate is much more vibrant and has more colors than the Pixel Book. Personally if both devices are over 300 nits (they are) o prefer color accuracy by a long shot.

Confirmed! Its a Nexus 5 from 2014. So forget the comparison video... Tell us why you are still rocking a 2014 Nexus 5? What ROM are you rocking? And lastly...why are you still rocking a Nexus 5? Although I will admit, out of all the Nexus phones the 5 was (IMO) the absolute best. With the Galaxy Nexus a close second.

The bezel issue only started because it related to the overall size of the laptop. If hipsters would stop following trends they could pick a laptop based on weight and screen resolution and ignore something superficial like bezel size. I'm all for reducing bezel size to get more screen with less weight. But to ignore a product based on bezel size alone is listening to the hype way too much and not thinking for yourself.
