I always found the trickster to be one of the scariest cause he's a regular person. He has charming good looks and is an idol to a ton of fans, all the while oblivious to his true monstrous self. He looks like someone I'd probably grab a beer with. That's why he's called the Trickster. Cause his appearance is beyond deceiving
@InjuredLionBoxing3 жыл бұрын
And not just his appearance - his personality too! Being crafted into a pop star he would know how to be chaming and he would be able to lure in anyone he wanted. He is the perfect predator, one who few could resist and nobody would suspect.

This is what I liked about him too, the fact that, outside of his daily past time of murder, he was just a guy, a famous guy don't get me wrong, but just a guy. He has fans, he has charisma and personality, looks like a guy you'd get a beer with, as Magnus mentioned. His fans probably have merchandise of him and posters in their bedrooms, which is what makes him so terrifying to me, and one of the more realistic killers in DBD tbh. Not a supernatural horror, or monster from another dimension, or a bioweapon, but just a serial killer who nobody would suspect.

This-- is going to get long. You know I'm a big Jiwoon/Trickster lore diver- and I have to say there's some interesting points here. About the "Show don't Tell" writing. Ironically, his lore was very much that- and I think is what made it seem... 'shallow' to those that didn't look deeper- or simply those that don't fully understand how the Kpop industry functions intimately like stans or South-Koreans. It's why they didn't feel the need to tell us just how gruelling and competitive the industry is. How companies will strip an individual down to market them however they please {Trickster's {and Yunjin's initial} boredom/hatered to NoSpin being just that}, and why he held onto the one thing that made him an individual {his knife tricks [Which helped pay the family bills, if you know about the IMF crisis in Asia that was likely going on at the time] is possibly what differed him from Yunjin's poverty as a child. And what makes using them for NoSpin [No-Spin is a knife throwing technique he uses btw] to boost popularity so... critical. His talent and knife skills literally hard-carried everyone through his life, and in turn they supported him because of it. } (I do believe the writing stemmed heavily from K-culture and it holds up entirely because of it. It's not the usual Western story-telling we're used to. {Making an obvious hero/villain}. It's a bit more 'thrillery'.) I still believe it was actually intentionally done this way, to get people to see him the way others would. "He's not all that scary." "He's dumb and too cocky." etc. (I call it the ARG effect, because why people initially think he's too lame/extra to be a killer, is what makes him really good at it.) I double down on it being intentional because it's no surprise how well Crescendo melded together with the initial release, and how fast it came out. It literally picks up right after All-Kill, the Crescendo tome trailer showing just how it leads up to the killing of MighteeOne mentioned in initial Lore. Both the chapter and tome release I think are some of the most well-written in game. As for the making him seem... dumb in his lore, for Jiwoon to even be getting away with the murders is impressive when you realize how uncommon violent crime is in South Korea {Along with how hard it is to even become a police officer. We're talking about a country that has Mandatory Military Service drafting with regiments as grueling as the US' given to most males, unless they're exempt. Which means lots of mental training comes with being an officer, requiring exams and years at university.} Often some of the worst crimes aren't done by individuals, but companies- or those with power/money. (Squid Games and Parasite kind of attest to that social enviornment.) The fact that he was taunting to the police but never getting caught was proof that he was actually quite insidious- hiding away, not in the shadows, but in the spotlight. He knows how to manipulate people- (his perks all focusing on that) and torture them (his knives not being instant downs but instead playing at the survivors one by one, making them suffer to let HIM have more fun. Cultivate a better performance.). This man is scary, manipulative, and an idol (proper god-complex) because of it. It's just a bit understated most times, because he masks it as an idol. {Ghostface, but... extroverted}. There's an interesting sub-story in the lore, which doesn't get made overly apparent- and that's just how much this 'god' is being used. Yunjin sure, profited off him, but MighteeOne, NoSpin, even his parents all did as well. The one thing that Trickster's always had be his own was his knives. Not his music- no, that he tried reclaiming back from NoSpin and adding his own twist like Yunjin did when she produced {with Magnum Opus}. Which of course was perverse and horrible- which was exactly what made it so morbidly unique. MighteeOne and YunJin were still trying to force him back to playing the puppet, which makes his story is one of rebellion- from the inside of the machine. He had a tragedy happen and they still used that as a selling point! His own emotions were being marketed, so it's no wonder he decided to use other's. No surprise he ended up going insane! He's as much tragic as he is an arrogant jerk and villain. Sidenote: There's something cheeky about No5pin (a five member group) turning to just Trickster under MighteeOne/M1, with Yunjin also having worked for them-- and their clash of ruthlessness to come out as the "one" on top.

Kind of weird of how many similarities there are between clown and trickster, both are narcissistic entertainers and use knives as part of their kit and have more colorful outfits compared to most of the dbd killers. Where I think they differ is that Ji-Woon is clever most of the time to outwit his pursuers where as clown is rather lazy and whenever he’s caught he just simply skips town and no really chases after him.

Even without this tome, I really liked his lore. One of my favorite parts of just the base lore was the final part, where he slaughtered the Mightee One higher-ups. You notice some very intresting parallells between Yun-Jin’s text, and Ji-Woon’s. In Yun-Jin’s, she describes it as nothing but carnage, a mass murder. However when you read Trickster’s part of the story, you see it describe how he dances between the bodies, slashing and striking them in different areas to produce a variety of sound. Why isn’t this mentioned in Yun Jin’s story? Because it’s something that only the Trickster hears, which is imo such a cool little detail to show just how delusional he is. He sees a tasteful performance, she sees murder. It’s a nice and slick detail I noticed that I thought might’ve gone over a lot of people’s heads.

@caldw6153 жыл бұрын
There wasn't enough context in the original to make it seem intentional though which was the issue, it's easy to interpret that someone could connect the dots based on his behaviour and when people went missing. The new tome does update this a bit to make him seem more cunning overall and wanting to play mind games with Yun-Jin but the original on its oan did make it seem like he was just incompetant and could have got caught way sooner if Yun-Jin wasn't essentially burying her head in the sand.

@@caldw615 imo he always felt like a text book sociopath, poor impulse control and highly manipulative. It's stated in his base lore that he's afforded a lot of privelages due to his celebrity status, and based on real life this comes across as very much the norm. Not to mention lots of serial killers enjoy taunting those trying to catch them with letters and clues. Yun-Jin seems to be the only person who was able to piece it together, but even then she was in denial. Another of my problems too with PBE's assessment, was that he felt the story should have explored the dark side of KPop, which to be fair would have been interesting, but certainly wasn't necessary for the Trickster to work as a character. one thing id like to say is that i do think the violent fanbase Mightee One is worried about is real, and it's based off one thing; The Diamond Cufflinks add-on. It specifically calls out that those cufflinks - once again a clue he intentionally left behind for fun - were left in the eyes of a sasaeng fan. A sasaeng fan isn't just a fan who's a stalker, they're a fan who is willing to do ANYTHING to get their idol's attention. there have been cases of sasaengs poisoning and harming their idols for attention. although sasaengs can appear in any fandom - and DO - the fact that Jiwoon, who we've been told wasn't overly popular, has one i think speaks to the violence and obsession he cultivated around his fans.

I’ve always been curious about her, since they haven’t really talked much about her and Yun-Jin did have that level of care for her in her story if I’m not mistaken. Just my opinion, but it’d be interesting if she was abducted by the entity as trainee just before she is able to debut, something Yun-Jin was rejected as. Could add a bit more depth to Yun-jin’s Past that she doesn’t like remembering from another perspective.

Yun-Jin is an enabler who benefits from the Trickster and therefore refuses to accept responsibility for her part in his actions. It's also especially notable that despite going on 5 since monsters like Weinstein and Spacey were outed, the music industry still has a lot of dark skeletons in its closet who haven't been dealt with.

I think, one of the most rewarding things they can know, is that they inspired their fans to be better and do better. When I idolize someone, I want to be the kind of person that they would be proud of; it doesn’t matter if they know or not. You don’t do it for recognition, you do it because that person is one more thing in your life that has shaped you. The disturbing part is that this applies to the bad as well as the good. back when I still played DBD Tricker, Twins, and Clown where my favorite killers to play because you can use their powers in certain map elements to pull the rug from under survivors like throwing a bottle at the top of the cow tree covering the entire loop with 1 bottle that forces them to take a hit if they stay or pulling off a 2 second double hit on one survivor with victor and charlotte, BUT MAN I will always love hearing Trickster's supreme combo laugh (doing like 3+ damage states with one unending combo)

This feels more like it pays homage to a Scream story than the Legion and Ghostface's lore ever did. A game of mistrust and manipulation.

Yes yes yes yes! I always loved play trickster, he is my second main ( after Oni and the third is Deathslinger) and always loved his skins, design and his ability. Was a really simple ability but machine gun knife is just so fun for me. But his lore let a bitter taste in my mouth. Really liked the idea of crazy artist but the execution was mediocre at best. Now he has a great fucking tome and another cool skin ( all though they could have kept his mask on and it would have been better) so I'm a pretty happy guy, all three of my mains have fun gameplay and good ass stories, hell to the yeah.

I'm honestly super excited to see a Feng Min tome well I love certain elements of her backstory some of it just doesn't really click well. Hopefully they can do something that succeeds a lot better in fleshing her out the proper way

Both the Trickster and Jhin from League of Legends are very similar in that they are both "artists" in a sense, are murderous criminals who kill in the name of art/music, and are always one step ahead of their pursuers to avoid getting caught. I think I tend to gravitate towards those characters who are very artistic and meticulous, but fucked up at the same time. Both are really interesting characters.
@themaccave082 жыл бұрын
Its funny to know that Twins has tome that I hope you’re gonna cover. I feel like All-Kill was needed as a refresher from DBDs dreary 2020 but it was heavily flawed and the tome was enough to fix it however. Or make it tolerable for most. Im very much hoping Ghostface receives a tome of his own as he has so much of his lore to go through but theres also so much to truly understand about his character, more that we know.
@poissonsumac79223 жыл бұрын
I never noticed all this! When you said the Trickster tome saved him I was like "Huh? Was it really that awesome?" But yeah, I see it now! I also never really thought about his obsessed fans and the implication his madness could be spreading. That's an interesting concept! Also....can someone explain to me why Kpop is infamously obsessive? Like I've listened to some songs and some are good but like I don't see a difference between it and other genres so strong to warrant a rabid fanbase like it apparently has.
@OBEDKHAOS3 жыл бұрын
It's idol culture.

Kpop it's cr4p, all musics are just the same and people only listem to it cuz the singers are korean
@poissonsumac79223 жыл бұрын
@@albertokaraiii3096 While AS A WHOLE it isn't my favorite genre, saying it's all the same is definitely not correct. There's a pretty big difference between Dreamcatcher's Scream and T-Ara's Lovey Dovey both in tone, rhythm, lyrics, and overall tempo. Honestly, I think the only qualifying factors of something being Kpop are, in fact, it's relatively modern and the singing group is Korean.
@shayforest3 жыл бұрын
I think it's largely due to how it cultivates the feeling of truly knowing your favorite idol with constant vlives and youtube livestreams and fanmeets, plus the personal investment from voting for constant music show wins and raising money for ads. mix in a bit of exaggeration (keep in mind that anything super popular with young women, particularly pop music for some reason, will immediately be seen as having crazed fans even if the fanbase is pretty well behaved) and you get some of the nastier sides of parasocial celebrity fandom on full display tl;dr it's not the music itself, it's the fan culture
@jarsofpaperstars3 жыл бұрын
Anything popular eventually developes a rabid subsection of fans, but the way idol culture is promoted in Korea and East Asia in general increases its severity tenfold. The personal investment fans make, coupled with how the industry in general rewards, encourages and thrives off it in terms of marketing, merch sales, winning awards for groups largely through votes, etc, makes Kpop prime breeding ground for obsessive behaviour. The fact that some companies still will pander to this kind of behaviour at their artist’s expense (the infamous slave contracts, dating bans to keep stan fantasies alive, extreme dieting) does not help. It’s a really ugly aspect of the industry to acknowledge when you’re a well behaved fan or casual listener, interacting with the fandom is usually safe but gets frustrating real quick when you run into obsessive stans. Like I was here to listen to nice music and have fun why must you ruin everything by being the way that you are I hate it here.

I feel like there could be an interesting dynamic between the Trickster and his fans. A psychopathic demagogue that has legions willing to cover up or kill for him, but will also hate and violently retaliate against those that upstage him.

With the jun yin cosmetic set i was thinking that jun would be like a mother at first to trickster but the time make her only interested into money. Leaving trickster doing whatever he wants because she gets money for what he does and doesn't need to care of him, only for his music

Great video as usual Mr Pixel lore man! It's so nice that my favourite killer received a great tome story and people are starting to appreciate him more. I adored him even before this tome but now I love this flamboyant man even more. Hope Feng and Artist get their individual tomes soon because I think their base lore is not that great. Cheers!

I'm late, but I wanted to say, I never got in your past videos why exactly you hated the Trickster's lore, but I think you explain it clearly and right away here; *He would've been caught.* His way of acting and how he doesn't ever tone himself down (putting diamonds in his victims eye holes) would've given him away eventually, especially if he had such a large position and following. I don't know if it was already there and never clicked, but I'm really glad I could understand now, because, that WOULD'VE been a big plot hole unless he had a solo career for only, like a week.
