I absolutely adore the "Cinderella we survived" line, i know its been said before but its just amazing, both Rapunzel and Cinderella were victims of abuse, you don't have to singlehandedly save yourself from an abusive situation to be strong during it, they both survived it and even if the princes of their tales helped them escape that doesnt make them any less strong, it doesn't invalidate what they went through, i think it's really great

I really love how they didn't paint the princesses who fell in love and the princesses who fought independently in an opposing light. They're both strong and neither is better or worse in general, it just depends on what you feel is right for you. In a video from another channel that I saw, they were talking about believing in love and happiness, but I just didn't like how the princesses who never got married seemed to be annoyed with the princesses who believed in that kind of love. This video doesn't have that. I think we need more representation like this, because media is now telling us that falling in love or asking for help makes us weak, which it doesn't. This song tells us that no matter how you choose to live your life, it's valid.

They're not even mutually exclusive! One can fight their own fight while still having a romance. I wouldn't say Disney has bridged that gap, but it's been done by other places, so it can't be that difficult.
@TheRoseFrontier
@TheRoseFrontier 9 ай бұрын
Oh yeah, for sure! I think that is a very good point to make... rather than pitting sides against each other, there really is value in showing that there are many ways to be "strong," and that looking a certain way or falling in love or not won't diminish that at all. It's good to point out that asking for help does not make you weak by any means. Too many of us fear reaching out to others because we feel it is a failure to ourselves to do so. It's good to be "independent" in the sense of pursuing your own path and being able to break free from those who want to put you down (not to say that you're weak for not being able to do that yet, though!), but if we conflate "independence" too much with "I don't need no man or anyone at all" it could do more harm than good, I think. I understand the desire to not make everything about romance (coming as someone aromantic myself!), but I don't at all think we should scoff at it, either. We should support and validate each other, not bring each other down

Cinderella was abused by an old, jealous, evil woman and her envious daughters. She wanted to have fun one night. One. Night. She didn’t even know the guy who asked her to dance was the Prince! She gritted her teeth and survived, her kindness towards the little animals and her wits saved her because the mice and birds helped her get out of the tower and then, keeping the other slipper allowed to be recognized and outsmarted Lady Tremaine who didn’t see that coming. CINDERELLA IS VALID!!

I dont know why Cinderella gets so much flak did they just not pay attention to the story. Cinderella is an abuse victim and despite that she still has an upbeat attitude, a kind heart, and a brave spirit. She handled her awful circumstances with unbelievable grace. And then she decides to rebel against her family and Go To The Ball just to have at least one night of fun for herself. So what if a Fairy Godmother and some mice helped her, is needing and accepting help a bad thing now???? Anyway she goes to the ball and basically managed to rizz up the (unbeknownst to her) prince so badly, the prince became desperate to find her to the point of using a shoe of all things when most people (including his aid) would have given it up for a bad job and say something along the lines of 'there are other fish in the sea'. And the Prince finds her and it's Happily Ever After because of course the Prince is going to help his One True Love. So for the love of God where in all of that is there a woman just waiting for a man to save her.

It's a story of surviving abuse, but theu don't care because they can make headlines out of it. It's easier to tear down the fictional character of a company than to critically analyse and call out the actually bad business practices of said company.

That is utter nonsense. These princesses are fictional characters, and their worlds are anything but realistic. They are full of magic and talking animals. Early Disney Princess movies are some of the only fantasy movies in which the protagonist does not have any control over the fantasy elements. You can’t have it both ways, either the movie and everything in it reflects reality, or you lean into the fantasy. Otherwise the “realism” of the princesses just sticks out like a sore thumb in an unrealistic fantasy world

Well, she did! She knew she had one chance to get out and she ain't letting it slips by. It wasn't the prince that picked her up from the tower, she worked her way to get out of the tower herself!

I honestly never understood the hate that Disney princesses get. I mean, sure some of the older ones were women of their time, but that doesn't mean that they don't have admirable qualities. Take Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora for instance. Sure, they don't fight a dragon or save a kingdom, but no matter what situation they were in they kept an air of optimism and they always maintained a sense of kindness to those around them. Since when did kindness and gentleness become a weakness? Especially for Cinderella's case. I think the people who say "She waited for a prince to save her. She should've saved herself" have no idea what it's like to grow up in an abusive household. And in regards to modern Disney princesses, they got more characterization, but people still criticize them. Like, if you watched the Little Mermaid you would know that before she even met Prince Eric, Ariel had a fascination for humans and dreamed of going on land. I think we need to give Disney princesses a little bit more credit because even if they don't do anything "heroic" most of them still exude positive qualities like kindness, perseverance, hope, determination, and so much more. And these are qualities that everyone can ascribe to, not just little girls. EDIT: Mama, I'm famous!!🤩

Because things aren't made in an isolated bubble. The princesses aren't real women that all just happened to fall in love, and all just happened to need saving. Every single one of them was made by Disney in a society that is misogynistic. They made the princesses helpless and boy obsessed because they were being sexist. Criticising the fact that for years, every single Disney princess fell into this pattern isn't being mean to the princesses for falling in love or needing help, or saying women shouldn't do these things, it's pointing out a megacorp was being sexist. They don't do it so much nowadays, and haven't for a while, and for good reason. "Wahh wahhh don't hate on the princesses, they're nice, you're being mean" is something a child would respond to criticisms of sexism with, not adults.

The way I see it, it's almost like a symbolism of her finally being freed from her abuser/kidnapper, bc think about it, iirc, all this mess started bc of mother Gothel's obsession with immorality and youth, and when she discovered that Rapunzel's hair has the same magic that the flower that kept her young and alive had, she decided to kidnap Rapunzel so she can stay alive and youthful for another God-knows-how-long, so when Eugene cuts Rapunzel's hair, it's like her being freed from her abuse, free to explore the world, to meet new people, make new friends, to finally live and be the person Gothel prevented her from being.

Belle was always “my” princess. I was bullied/ignored through elementary school, (i literally had no friends until i was in 6th grade) so i was that kid always spending time off in a corner with a book. Belle’s strength was always in her own sense of self-worth, her independence and compassion I can/will/have fought people for writing her off as having “stockholm syndrome” because they just completely missed the point of her character. Belle is also static which you almost never see with a main character. She doesnt have an arc, she doesnt need one. Belle drives the plot forward. The world/people change (for the BETTER i might add) because of her actions and influence. And i just think thats NEAT!

Same!!! Huge BatB fan that always has to say at least something whenever some likes to bring up this stupid argument. Will disagree that Belle was static throughout the story, she changed along with Beast/Adam when they fell in love. She realized the value of inner beauty & loving someone for who they were BECAUSE of their differences.
@orianefaton1885
@orianefaton1885 5 ай бұрын
@@mikafizz1022 She make that choice, because her attitude caused a positive change in the Beast/Adam. Before her, he was just a jerk, but she, unlike his servants dared to talk back to him, to even scream at him. And, through it, she caused him to change for the better. And as he began to change, she in turn saw him in a new light, enough to fall in love with him and have that "happily ever after". But, Belle does have a flat character arc. She never needed to change, just to find people that would love her for who she is and support her, which she got with her father and with the entirety of the castle.

I like Cinderella because her story shows that you can work and work and work, and you'll have hardships come your way, but good things can come to those who wait! No, she didn't fight anyone or get revenge on her step family, she chose to move on and take her happy ending, and I really like that.

Good news, Tiana is just as criticized because "but she cooks and that's in a kitchen". Ahhh yes, an industry of professionals that is entirely dominated by men that tend to bully women out of it. So you picked an equally put down princess. I like to pick a "top three" so if people complain I'm not being "progressive" enough, I can give them the hairy eyeball and ask if one of my three is "good enough" or maybe they're just a little misogynistic.

If your sister doesn't think Cinderella was strong or that she was just save or something, then you two should definitely watch Cinderella 3 (a Twist in Time) together. It's more action packed as a movie and it shows an alternative as to what would have happened if the prince selected someone else to be married, causing Cindy to fight for her man. The movie has some funny moments too. Cinderella 2 (even if we don't see as much of him here) and 3 both also show the prince more as a person who actually cares for Cinderella too and shows his reaction when the wrong girl fits his shoe. A lot of people just assumed he'd marry whoever but Cinderella 3 showed that he only wanted Cinderella and was just trying to help limit the search a bit the only way he could think of. Cinderella has always been my favorite princess. I liked her so much that as a kid I watched pretty much every movie I could that had the Cinderella plotline (not just the Disney ones). While I always fantasized about being whisked away by some adoring prince, one of the things I loved about her was how kind she was. She had a set of morals that she believed in and no matter how horrible her life became she always stuck to them. She was very strong to remain kind in such a cruel situation. The Disney sequels to Cinderella also explore how being brought up by the evil step mother effected her own children. For Drizzela she turned out very similar to her mother. For Anastasia it becomes clear that the way she treated Cinderella was a learned behaviour from her mother, one that she eventually unlearns. The sequels also show Anastasia's struggle with her mother's expectations for herself, eventually deciding she didn't want to live the life her mother was choosing for her, resulting on her needing to lean on Cinderella for support (Cinderella who helps her sister become a better person). Anastasia is one of my favorite characters from Disney and I am also really happy they never changed her character design to make her more stereotypical to how the other princesses look. Anyways, highly recommend the sequels if you haven't seen them.

I love that Mulan is like they say im an idol cuz i fought like a man cuz theres soooo much there about how female characters are so often only seen as “strong” when they exhibit masculine traits/actions. Yes she fought, but what made her successful as a soldier is the different perspective she brought to the table. Not brute force. When she acted outside expectation is when she accomplished the most. Her cleverness won the day, not brawn. Plus, she went to war specifically to prevent her father from being killed in the same fight. Ive seen people say she’s more aspirational and just stop at how she was a soldier - She didnt choose to leave home for honor or glory, she put herself at risk to protect her father- saving China on a whole came after that.

Honestly the “save yourself” kind of advice from that celebrity in the beginning gives off the vibes of how some people blame abuse victims of not getting out of the relationship. Now this isn’t just about women, it can be anybody. If you’re in an abusive relationship, it’s a complicated situation, some victims can’t see that the relationship they’re in isn’t healthy. Some victims are living under the same roof of their abusers. Some victims are too embarrassed or afraid to tell their story. We shouldn’t be giving advice like “save yourself”. At the end of the day, Disney princesses were made to make little girls feel special because a lot of Disney princesses can share the same features (and I know the older disney princess stories aren’t diverse but we have more and more diversity. In a way, Cinderella was in an abusive household. She was being treated awful, she was the caretaker of the home and the step-mother and step-sisters were absolute sadists with how they made sure Cinderella was in misery. However, Cinderella never let that change who she was. She was still nice and kind to the mice and animals, she was even kind to her step mother and step sisters even after they treated her like shit. The moral of the Disney Cinderella story, in my eyes at least, is do good and good things will come your way. It’s a perfect story of good consequences for your actions. Cinderella is very strong for not letting her abusers change her entire attitude. In the Disney version at least.. I can’t say the same for the original story of Cinderella which actually has a lot of different variations. We all know the brothers Grimm fairytale book but they didn’t actually write them, they just compiled them into a large book. I think Disney did a good job with their princesses with the first movies they made. Some sequels weren’t so great but nonetheless I think all the first movies of Disney princesses were perfect. The stories were great.

I totally loved this. It always makes me sad and a little bit angry when people talk down on the older primcesses or more "traditional" woman in general. People tend to forget the whole plot of the original movie when they bash the original princesses. They forget that Snow White ran away from her abusive step mother, she ran through a dark, dangerous forest and survived. They tend to forget that Cinderella didn't want to go to the ball because of the prince, she only wanted one night of freedom. They tend to forget that for all their talking of feminism they bash other woman for being more feminine in a traditional sense. They were strong in their own way, this video was perfect in showing that. I love every one of these princesses equally. Everyone of them is perfect. People just tend to forget that.

For me, I read this song as a feminist tale. It has happened and still happens that people misunderstand female empowerment for "going against gender roles" and shame women who choose to be traditionally feminine. This also connects to the "not like other girls" mentality that girls and women tend to adopt because of internalized misogyny, where they feel the need to put down fellow women to feel better about themselves, and sometimes think that being masculine makes them better because they've been taught that femininity means weakness. But that's not the way to do it. This only furthers the oppression of women by giving them yet another, different standard for how they should be. We should all strive to make sure every woman lives the way she wants without being shamed for it - and as women, stop comparing ourselves in an attempt to undermine each other, for every woman can be strong in her own unique way :)

Cinderella is the most misunderstood princess I swear and I truly believe those who misunderstand her never actually watched the movie or saw it like once when they were a kid.. she’s my favorite princess because despite all the abuse she had to endure, losing both of her parents, losing her family home; she still chose kindness and forgiveness and she kept hoping for a better day. I related so much to Cinderella growing up. My mother and half sister treated me so horribly and I was the one pushed to do a lot of the cleaning in the house. I couldn’t go out and have friends and even when I managed to get a BF my mother had me clean the house before I could go to a school dance with him. Cinderella is strong and is deserving of love and the title of princess

Its cheesy, but being kind is a trait that is often overlooked in modern protagonists, both male and female. The live action Cinderella was on of the only remakes that worked in the stories benefit. They really highlighted that Cinderella is a survivor and that her main motivation was the going to the ball and maybe see her friend, not finding a husband or impressing the prince. And in regards to the original animated film - I know I've said this before -, it's a prime example of why media literacy is so important. We as audiences can and do infer meaning from the stories we consume, regardless of weather or not the writers put it there. I'm not going to pretend I can see into the minds of the filmmakers in the 1950's, but I can hazard a guess that they weren’t thinking about Cinderella's strength as an abuse survivor when they wrote the script, and that it's plausible that they viewed the story exactly as we stereotype it by it's face value. They certainly didn't look at her with the same depth as they did in 2015. It was the audience and her fanbase that made sure she was seen for what she was, regardless of whether the writers did.

Interesting that live action Ariel was used, not that using her is a problem, but the rewriting for her compared to her animated counterpart, because Rachel Zegler's words ring true of modern Disney remakes, and LA Ariel was sadly effected by that as they removed the part, where Eric saves her in the end from Ursula with the ship. Modern Disney is no place for old timey Princesses like animated Cinderella, because now Disney wants them to be fearless, independent girlbosses who can save themselves... But also somebody else said it, original Ariel got that criticism, LA Ariel was changed due to it.

It's not just princesses, it's true for every woman in the world. There are women who are happy married out of high school, women, who happily serve in the military, women, who pursue their career or leave it to be a mother. The point is, as long as you are happy and true to yourself in the end, who cares if you are strong, independent or a good example? Cinderella doesn't have to teach us about saving herself. She teaches us about being kind to everyone, no matter the shitty situation you are in and knowing when to accept help.

Real girl bosses know when to back down, and call for the big guns :) (Please let me know if there's anything wrong in my comment. I haven't seen Cinderella yet and only know the basic gist of it :) ) Also just like Rapunzel said, she survived, which is- great and also powerful and uh, they're all so so strong and brave and amazing for overcoming all their obstacles, the single handley ones, and the ones that got overcome with extra help too.

I literally cried watching this, for some time I was part of the stupid crowd criticizing and saying that princesses like Cinderella and Snow White were dumb and damaging, and honestly, I didn't start believing it because I thought myself, but rather because everyone else was saying it over and over again they ended up convincing me of something I didn't even believe, and because of that I also started changing myself and the way I act to eliminate all I could that resembled Cinderella, because I didn't want to be seen as stupid or too girly or too childish. Thankfully, with time, I've been able to realize that Cindy is actually a very strong fucking woman who everyone should look up to, she may not have saved her country, she may not have magical superpowers or something like that, but she has so much kindness and patience and love to give, she has herself and her friends and truly, that's all she needed to be happy, even in the awful situation she was in; through it all, she remained strong, an unwavering force of kindness not even lady Tremaine could defeat and that's just incredible and in my opinion, an amazing message to give to young girls, that sometimes you might find yourself in difficult situations you can't escape, but even when the universe is throwing rocks at you and trying to bring you down, the best you can do is face it with a kind smile, offer a helping hand to those in need and keep true to yourself, because ultimately, the people who you helped and held close in the way will be the ones to help you and protect you when you need it. God, I swear I could keep talking about this for so long.

Amazing amazing! I love Cinderella and all the other princesses. Her story is one of kindness and perseverance. Her family was cruel to her and paints her as someone they needed to punish and discipline. Cinderella never let the pain of people hurting her to be an excuse to hurt them back in turn. She rebels through kindness, by proving them wrong with how they see her, by staying true to herself. She finds joy in her hobbies and simple pleasures and she made friends and found love through that! "Rescue yourself." is such a cruel thing to say to people in abusive homes, there is nothing wrong with getting help and it is not their fault they are in that position! I'm glad this musical animatic shows Cinderella surrounded by love and support.

In relation its meant to mean in the real world as well it doesn't matter if you fall in love or not, everyone's story varies and that's okay because we all have different good qualities and goals with value.

It feels to me like disney has tried to really step away from giving their princess or princess-like characters a love interest to show that they’re “strong” and “independent.” And to be fair, it’s good to have those characters too! But I’d also love to see more of their “strong independent” female leads in disney princess movies who do fall in love because I think it’s very important to show that the two can and should coexist. At the end of the day I think it’s all about having a good variety ! :))

People always forget that Snow White and her prince knew eachother in the Disney movie. They had a scene together in the beginning of the movie but people just think it’s witty to trash timeless stories that have been beloved for generations.

@@Danka42They're fictional characters, if your that uncomfortable with it. Take it up with Disney for promoting it. But, by you watching the movie,it's clear that it doesn't really affect you as much as you claim. Otherwise, you would've avoided watching it entirely if the age gap was THAT problematic. You guys always say this, but then freak out whenever you get called lut lmao😂

I love your art style, though I'm not a fan of you switching out only ariel for the live action remake version, it's the original ariel that got all the critisism about leaving the ocean for a man even though 'part of your world' was sung before she even met Eric, so she should've been the one represented here just like you did with all the other princesses original designs. The remake interviews even support these critisims and were acting like they did it better even tho they clearly missed the point of the original in the majority of the changes they made.

I think it's a little jarring style-wise since none of the others were swapped for their live action counterparts, but in a few news articles I've read, people have *still* stated that perhaps there's no point in making a remake because, in the end, it's still a story about a girl who gives up her voice for a man 🙄 When in *both* versions she had shown clear interest in human culture long before meeting Prince Eric. So I suppose you could interpret it as commentary on how some people will always hold women to an unreasonably high standard of independence, that they cannot be a good role model if what they do can be even slightly tied to a man.

@@smoxthybweh Yeah, I totally get the confustion! There are plenty of obscure Disney Princesses that don't really get marketed as them, and if I didn't stay up to date with Disney fandom stuff, I might have confused her with one of them too. Like Eilonwy, Giselle...some of whom actually have more reason to be called princesses than a lot of the modern ones (such as Mulan and Asha, who have no royal blood, *or* direct familial connections to someone with great authority in their society, basically making them the equivalent of a princess in their society---such as Moana or Raya)

“No one can say we aren’t strong, Cinderella we survived” I grew up in abusive households. I didn't have the options to fight against what happened. I had to hold my head down and keep quiet to make it through. Even joining the military couldn't get me away because I was so beaten down and trapped in a home situation. Finding love, and later marrying him, is what finally got me out of those horrible situations. I made it through. Cinderella will *always* hold a place in my heart for this, because she shows that sometimes, surviving, remaining kind and good throughout, is also a strength. In short, thank you so, so very much for this!

YES SOMEONE FINALLY REMEMBERS RAPUNZEL HAS SHORT AND BROWN HAIR AT THE END OF THE MOVIE!! THANK YOU!!! As a brunette kid who always had pixie cuts growing up, it made me so happy to see a disney princess with similar hair since I felt too unfeminine for girls my age. It's one of the reasons tangled is one of my fav disney princess movies but disney's marketing always prefered the rapunzel with long blonde hair unfortunately

That so amazing and so true too. Seems like so many movies nowadays are too focused on the "I'm a boss babe and I need no man" that forget to tell a story, that forget that real people fall in love too and there's nothing wrong with that, it's only one piece. Heck, some of those older moves show much more independence, goals, dreams in their characters, regardless of if they fall in love or not.

The we Survived line legit made me cry . Everyone paints the fighting wars , and going on adventures to be brave but you can be brave in small things . We forget that Cinderella was literally abused daily by her step family for years and years and years that even going out to a ball was a rebellion in her own right going against everything she was raised by and everything she was taught to be by her step mother and step sisters .

NOT THE CINDY DISS 😭 Cindy constantly gets victim blame! Imagine telling someone in real life to save themselves in these circumstances. She was LITERALLY A SERVANT in her own home, had no friends aside from the animals, constantly verbally abuse and unloved by her only family. Can you really blame her for just wanting to settle down with someone who loves her or just wanting a fun night out. Having a happy marriage is honestly something to brag about anyways with the divorce rates in today's age. Also the fact that prince charming still married her despite her being a servant says alot about him. Although idk if there has been any instances in real life where a king/prince married a peasant. Cinderella was loved so much by the mice that they made a dress for her!

i used to hate cinderella when i was younger but then i actually understood how strong she was. most of the young women don't fight with bears or go to war instead of their fathers, but a lot of them experience abuse and cannot escape it so easily, but cinderella stayed kind. it was her way to fight, her way to protect herself. she could easily become just like her stepmother and step sisters but she kept her self-respect and still wanted to believe in good. (which is not so easy in this conditions) and yeah, when she saw the opportunity for her own happiness sh took it without a doubt cause she always knew she deserves to be happy.
