When people say don’t get a 1000cc, they aren’t referring to Cruisers or touring bikes, they’re referring to sport bikes that are pushing over 200hp

And they’re usually saying it to the young and stupid who just hear speed. I have a friend younger than me at 19 and wants a gxsr 1000 (typical squid I know) and I call him a moron for it. And yes he just wants to go fast😒

Wrong, the bigger heavier bikes with lots of torque are much much easier for a new rider to get themselves into trouble with. Roll on the gas just a little too much in a corner and you maybe getting introduced to road rash or worse. They also don't handle well in comparison so it's harder to turn the bike and requires more skill.

My first “motorcycle” was a 125cc scooter. It’s pink. Honestly very glad I started there. So fun, can go on the highway if you’ve got the balls. Will teach you countersteering and balance without worrying about a heavy ass bike or working the clutch.

Educated opinion here. I would say max power is about what woody is saying for a beginner bike. 40-70hp. So typically I would say you want at most a 650cc twin. And stay away from 4cyls they are very powerful typically. Make sure your bike has abs and can be flat footed easily by you. You can but I dont recommend starting on anything smaller then a 300cc twin. Anything smaller then that is handicaping you for your next bike. Also buy used, you probably are at least going to drop the bike parking it or backing up. Might as well reduce your losses financially. I made mistakes and I did things right when I first started. You will too but try to get as much right as possible to reduce your risk and your losses. Take your time while learning! Dont try to keep up with your crazy friends.

My motorcycle progression went: Honda xr125, CRF250l, and the VFR 800i is next. I think dual sports are just wonderful for learning. They lack the speed to get into trouble easily, you can often go all out without it being dangerous.

Its not the point of going fast, its the point of being a beginner and not shooting yourself into a wall because you don't know clutch control and you freeze up pull the throttle and on 1000cc your dead 300cc to 500cc are safe in the realm of how safe motorcycles are

My first bike was an SV650, and I think it could also be my last bike. I miss it every single day after riding super sports, cruisers, dual sports, adventure bikes, sports tourers. The rebel is a great bike, always has been, it'd be the perfect beginner bike for someone who sees themselves on a cruiser all day, but so is an old shadow 750. If someone wants to end up on a super sport or sport tourer the cb500 would be a much better choice, same engine and power as the new rebel 500 but it's a sport-ish kind of bike. Depends on what you're drawn to, every style of motorcycle has a good entry point.

If you are aftaid of falling , get summer moto gear . Its comfortable and cheap, no waterproof liner means more airflow. Basicaly an armored cordura or kevlar flannel shirt with crash padding. Cordura jeans . Most importantly a fullface helmet , moto boots and gloves. Research your options but waterproof boots and gloves arent a problem ,your back and legs need to be cool, your feet and hand dont. But if you have the cash get summer gloves and boots too. If you want a cooler helmet get moto glasses(bobster is a decent company) and open the visor permanently. The airflow is amazing.

It's not like you can't learn on physically bigger bikes, or high hp bikes. But it will take much longer to get good at riding and the more weight and power you have the easier it is for a small mistake to become a big problem. If you are actually interested in becoming a skilled rider, you will be far less likely to get into a crash. Start with a dirt bike or street and trail bike and learn in the dirt first. Riding on dirt will teach you skills you will not learn without mistakes on the road. The rear wheel sliding or locking up is a actually skill in the dirt. So when it happens on the road, and it will happen sooner or later you already have the skills to control it. There's lots of people who will say I learned on this big bike. And you can usually tell when you are riding with them they learned on a big bike cause majority of them are crappy riders.
@McMintyMP

Yeah the only way people can jump into big boy road bikes is if they have experience on dirt. Its almost a requirement for riding. I've never met a really good rider that didn't grow up with dirtbikes.

I know people buy used sport bikes all the time (and I have in the past) but if you're really riding a bike I'd avoid used at all cost. You have no idea what people have done to their bikes. And you can't trust a dealership to check on everything.

fyi, cruisers typically have a lot of low end torque and less high end velocity, but the high gears are made for low power highway cruising. that 1,000hp indian scout 60 probably wont run any faster than a ninja 650, which is not a scary fast bike. power delivery is also totally different on something like a cruiser. they are generally not geared to stand up or launch like sport bikes or super sports. engine displacement is not everything in the bike world.

Yamaha bolt is a great starter 950cc twin. But I can’t stress a grom or z125 pro enough. One of the few starters you won’t want to trade in within a month. I mean you’ll want something faster, but you won’t want to sell the grom/125 pro to get it. Slow enough to be forgiving but always fun!! Also cheap to fix and replace parts for the eventual meeting with the ground.

I don't really think the HP numbers matter as much on a bike like the Indian. v twins are much lower revving which is perfect for what Kyle said he's trying to do which is cruise. They also have more torque in the low end which makes the cruising aspect more fun if you ask me. I had a CBR 600 and it was fun winding through the gears, but you really had to go to at least 10k RPM just to have any fun with it. I have a Harley sportster 48, I can shift at 3000-3500 rpm and be just as happy.

Im 6 foot 2 ish . Basicaly cruzers are low but comfy unless you are hughmungus like shaq or have dwarfism , you will be comfy . Torso carries torso , legs carry legs hands carry arms , plush seat, Straight back , no straining even after hours in the saddle , crusers fit almost everyone because their legposition is like a recliner, big or small you will be comfortable. I ride a yamaha xvs 250 dragstar(basicaly a v star ) and honda shadow 125 cc. They are comfortable. As far as bang per buck . Enduros and dualsports are the sht, if you want a sportbike. 400 ccs and redline that bitch, 600+ ccs are serious racemachines though. Untill i MASTER a 400 im not getting on a 600 .

I dont like the Honda Rebel, foot position on a cruiser is not something I like, Id suggest something like a naked with a more upright position and pegs under you over in front of you, its more like a bicycle to rade a naked. I low displacement bike with a more inline position is good for a beginner bike in my experience of learning to ride and also teaching someone how to ride.
