They either didn't know or forgot that the engine runs without the electrical system, it happens in a stressful situation. But landing behind another airplane, that close, without smashing on the brakes, side stepping into the grass or a taxiway, landing past them, or otherwise avoiding them is simply poor piloting through and through. Your brakes aren't electric l, they still work. You don't need flaps to stop, and you can make S turns or a 360 to build spacing. You crashing into the back of another airplane in this situation is entirely avoidable and incredibly reckless. Glad you didn't murder the unsuspecting people in the other aircraft.

So much in this video to unpack. One of the first things that I was taught in training was the basics of how all the systems of the aircraft work together. And that on pretty much all aircraft the engine(s) and the electrical systems aren't tied to each other. You could lose your entire panel and the plane will keep flying until you run out of fuel. Also, a lot of the "old-timers" always carried a handheld radio as backup in the event that they lost their radios. That way they could always fire that up and continue to make calls while in the area of the airport. It was always part of the pre-flight checklist to ensure that it had sufficient battery power and was able to send/receive. Older aircraft have "steam" gauges, meaning no electricity required. It was obvious from the video that everything was working fine except the radio, transponder, and GPS. And even if he had had more modern electrical gauges or a flat panel, most if not all have self-contained battery backup, so they still should have worked. And even if they didn't, he had an iPad strapped to his leg running Foreflight. And it was perfect VMC; you could see Houston downtown 30 miles away! You said "skilled pilot". Two things wrong with that; 'skilled' and 'pilot' as neither describes the individual in the left seat. Worst example of situational and management skills that I've ever seen. Luckily it didn't result in fatalities. He shouldn't have his license suspended, it should be revoked permanently.

This is insanity. Both what actually happened and that this was posted online at all…Massive negligence on the part of the pilot. I have like 90 hours and even I know an electrical failure is not an emergency in a plane like this. Serious fuck up…. Your “skilled pilot” almost killed that guy in front of you for zero reason after breaking multiple basic safety regulations.

I really hope there is some info we are missing about the situation other than losing electronics.

But he still had his Ipad with foreflight :)

Wow, I thought it was a common demonstration to turn the master battery off with students while the engine is running. At least on the ground. How else do you save that extra 0.1 when you’re taxing back to the flight school?

Good lord. I don't say much about other pilot's skills, but man this was BAD. So much was bad here.

I'm just an airplane enthusiast, not a pilot. Even I was like, he's not going to land that close to the other plane, right? Oh sh!t! He is. I'm yelling at the phone to go around the first time I saw the video.

The best thing you can do for your personal safety and longevity is to make sure you never never never ever get in a plane with that ‘pilot’ again! In fact don’t get in a car with him either! His ability to make really really poor decisions is obvious. He will probably have his licence suspended anyway.

What licensed pilot has to immediately land due to power loss with working magnetos in VMC? What a dope. I can't wait to see what Dan Gryder is going to say about that 'pilot'.

Is there a “rest of the story” that would justify the pilot’s actions? Was there electrical smoke? Burning insulation? I find it incredibly difficult to believe that a pilot, even a very inexperienced one, would panic like this over, say, a battery dying because of a failed alternator.
@gagewarner65027 сағат бұрын
I'm sorry to say, your pilot was not skilled. This was entirely unavoidable as the electrical system doesn't prevent you from continuing to fly and trying again. This was a foolish mistake and terrible case of "get-there-itis"
@MBProductionStudio14 сағат бұрын
That pilot should never fly again. An electrical failure on a beautiful day with an iPad strapped to your leg... Insanity, there are piper cubs flying with no electric everyday. I had a total electrical failure at night in a G1000 and still managed to fly another 25 minutes to the closest airport. Good job ruining another innocent man's airplane and putting a bunch of people's lives at risk.

Electrical failure on a VFR day is not an emergency! The engine was still making power. This “skilled” pilot should never be allowed at the controls again. Pilots like this are the reason insurance is so f*ckin high.
