So, to address some of the comments. We still don't know why the flaps failed and may never know. Trust me I will tell you if I figure it out. A FAA inspector and a representative from Textron did go over the aircraft shortly after the accident and didn't find a definitive answer. They did find a bad connection at the starter. Im curious to see their report when released. Also Mr Gryder, we have become friends over this ordeal and have no bad feelings towards each other. He was very involved with the Go-Fund-Me and has offered to pay if I need money to finish it. Lots of people have helped and if they choose to keep that private it's not really my place to boast what they did financially. So no he didn't abandon me. Last I currently have rental insurance through Clements which has hull coverage. I'm sure we will change that later when the 150 is completed. Otherwise big thank you to crew of Taking Off. It was fun and glad I got to make some new friends.

Thank you for being an honorable man and a great father, Matt. I donated a tiny bit which was what I could afford after hearing about the fundraiser through Dan Gryder's channel. His personality may rub some people the wrong way but I believe he is truly trying to help general aviation. I can't wait to see your airplane back in the air with you and your daughter.

Matt, I was working for an FBO that had a really dinged up leading edge on a 172 years and years ago. It was hit on a steel beam in a hangar while pulling it out. It was a substantial dent. The maintenance shop got in there somehow and kinda hammered it out a little bit and that plane is still flying as a trainer 15 years later. Just throwing this out there that as long as the skin isn't cracked or otherwise compromised, maybe it can be hammered out in the short term and replaced at a later, more convenient date.

Excellent video Dan and Christy... thanks for giving Matt (and Dan) some airtime!! I am thankful I have been able to get to know Matt a little bit since the incident and I can tell you he is as honest and humble as he appears in the video!! Dan also has a heart of gold and even though he ran off after the incident to take care of pressing ACCA duties, he NEVER abandoned Matt, even to this day!! I am extremely thankful to be able to call both of these incredible men my friends!!

From the Atlanta Journal nrwspaper. "Delta Air Lines has suspended a pilot while officials investigate charges he tried to run over two Griffin police officers with his private plane. Dan Wayne Gryder, 48, remains in the Spalding County jail, charged with two counts of aggravated assault and obstruction. He is being held without bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday, the sheriff’s office said." AvWeb, also, carried the story. Check them.out for the details.

I remember when that happened. I heard about it on another channel while waiting for the ACCA's to kick off, so I went scrambling around to the channels of everyone I knew that was there, and cobbled together the info. Then I found Matt's channel. I felt so bad for him! Still do! Glad you had him on, since I've been missing darn near every single KZbin notification lately, and haven't been on his channel in a while. Time to get back over there. I'm a blue collar guy myself - I've done industrial roofing, factory work, drove trucks for many years, and am now a mechanic - it ain't easy buying big toys. It makes a BIG hole in the wallet, but the joy that comes from gasoline powered toys is inexplicable to those who don't understand it. It cuts deep when something happens, and your outlet from this crazy world is now smashed to pieces, and you've got a mountain of money to try and find to get it back in action again. Thankfully it's only happened 2.5 times - the half time I count my paramotor rollover, since all I had to buy was a prop. Broke my hand though. At age 13, I let a middle school friend ride my nearly brand new '86 Yamaha BW80 that my parents had bought for me - that was a BIG deal, since my parents weren't rich by any stretch, and them buying big ticket items even for themselves was unheard of. So when my buddy hopped on the bike, twisted the throttle, then panicked, and drove it right into the side of a house, my heart was broken. I was distraught! Then I had to go tell my parents what happened - to them it was as if I didn't have any regard for the sacrifices they made to get me this bike. Was a tough time. Long story short, we found a way to repair it cheap, and my dad and I got it back in action again! What a great day that was!! This was a fantastic interview! Matt is a great guy. Thanks Dan and Christy for bringing him on. 👍

Get that private pilots license friend, it's the first most rewarding thing you can achieve in aviation that you can show your friends and family and more importantly yourself, just don't quit when you make the mistakes. As long as you keep coming back, the mistakes will disappear and eventually your understand why what you did wasn't working. Best of luck to you and hope you have the money, time and perseverance to make it happen.

What a great video and a great guy. His honest take on the events was very refreshing to hear. As someone who flys a Cessna I wish he would of been asked what exactly went wrong with the flaps. Also at the flight school I instructed at we had a pilot land in tall corn one summer. There was minimal damage to the Cessna 152. It didn’t flip upside down tho.

My father and I was there at ACCA when that happened. As the matter of fact that's us under the wing of Dan's DC-3 by the left landing gear. I'm sitting on the ground next to daddy in his wheelchair. He is a Vietnam veteran and got to ride in Glenn's Lockheed Electra. We had the greatest time that weekend. Unfortunately he passed away February 2 and it's been pretty rough on me to be honest. It's memories like that make me smile to know we definitely had so much fun together up until the end. I'm glad you are getting your plane back together Matt. The honesty and humblety Matt tells the story in inspiring, not to mention his sense of good humor. This was great to hear an update on this. The only complaint I have is that all of you failed to mention that the electric flap system failed (no fault of Dan Gryder) and he managed to save the airplane and both occupants. Dan knew that they couldn’t stretch the flight path or they would both be dead like so many other pilots. This should have been mentioned. Dan also went on KZbin and talked about this and the GoFundMe so that donations could be given. Dan did that because he cared about this guy and his airplane. Matt should have had hull insurance since you should never drive a car or fly an airplane you can’t afford to replace out of your own pocket. All of you should have used this event as a caution to others to insure your airplanes. That’s the beef most people have about GoFundMe is that folks want to play and live without minimizing the risks by using insurance. Gofundme let’s them do that on other people’s dime. I hope he gets hull insurance after this. If He doesn’t and damages his airplane again, he’ll be right in the same spot. Just a bounced landing could do $10k of damage or total his baby

I used to fly 1960 C172B that has Johnson Bar flaps. At 40 degrees it's quite a view, especially flying out of an airport that's at 5,507' in the summer. Density altitude is routinely at 9,000' in the summer. I loved having 40 degrees of manual flaps. I did all of my flight training in a C150 and C152. I hope you get yours back in the air soon.

I did my training in a c150 on a short grass strip I know what your saying about to people on a hot day you don't climb out very fast... but we did train at 2000 or 2500 feet with 40 degree flaps and it held altitude... one day we turned into the wend put flaps to 40 and it just set there it was deer season and it was fun sitting still and seeing all the orange from the hunters... but anyway I never thought about it not flying low on a hot day and my instructor didn't ever bring it up.. so I learned something today... good job landing it.. and great video

Good job covering this! Very interesting. I fly a Champ now but 30 years ago trained in a 150 with those “save almost any approach” barn doors. (And in fact had a bit of an incident because I was used to them and their “foregiveness” of approaching too high and too fast. In shifting to the school’s 152 with 30 degrees I was high/fast once and the plane wouldn’t stop flying. Surprised, I waited too long to start a go round and nearly ended up in the trees at the end of the runway. Was a valuable lesson: airplanes that look similar ain’t necessarily gonna behave the same….)

I call the C150 a "Ford Escort" too, I'm from the UK. That C150 looked stunning pre-accident. Hell of a tale to tell, glad no one was hurt👍😊 I love C150's fond memories of a C150B (manual flaps) and C150F (electric - and they could be 'sticky'), my dad used to short field and soft field those aeroplanes - safely - with no mods, he was even better in a taildragger - wish I was as good👍😄 But 40° of flap is definitely a drag flap/speed brake and not one to be used lightly, with most day to day flights, especially not with the weight of a C150 vs the power.

From Dan Gryder i saw a few videos before this crash in which he said many times "Never to turnback if low altitude trouble on take off or go around, TO CRASH STRAIGHT AHEAD" if any problem at low altitude. Then in that C150 that he messed up a landing and had to go around, the flaps kept down, What did he try to do? A 100 FEET AGL TURNBACK 180 At MCA with Full Drag Flaps THE WORST KIND OF TURNBACK. From 100 agl. That is a very clear IMPOSSIBLE TURN. He crashed before completing it, because HE DID AN IMPOSSIBLE TURN he said before only dummies will do. Horrible decision in Kansas with thousands of acres in front to land it. He lied when he said there was no place in front to land. C150 stops in 300 feet of grass or less.

It's disappointing that the pilot in control, at the time of the crash, didn''t stay by Matt to offer support in the manner required. The fact that he took off rather than stay, not forgetting that HE was pilot in control at the time of the crash, is narcissistic behaviour in my view. Dan Gryder should be called out on that. The other guys that provided the support are the genuine people who are to be applauded.

A year one and a year late but my feelings on watching this excellent upload still remain the same. This is a good person and a sensible person. And he didn't do anything wrong in letting someone with as much experience as Dan fly his plane. My other reaction is that Dan is an outstanding pilot. No doubts in my mind. This unfortunate event and if the same had happened without Dan being there the outcome may, repeat, may have been much worse. Dan is a controversial character to some in the aviation community, but he did the right thing and flew the plane into the cornfield when so many would have tried to make the road. He knew it would result in damage and, maybe, huge expense, but he did the right thing. However it clearly was not a good decision to put an airplane he hadnt flown before in a unusual procedure. If he hadnt we would not all be making judgements on the right and wrongs of this affair because there would be nothing to discuss. Shit happens, but really that is no excuse. Sensible people overcome that certainty by not tempting fate and not allowing anyone, not even Chuck Yaeger, to fly your plane if you dont know them. And we know Chuck Yeager would have never asked an acquaintance to allow him to put his plane through an unusual procedure.

Matt, I have a 172 that did the flaps failed to deploy one time. It only costed me a long landing. Never failed again since. In regards to the negative rhetoric, don't listen to the WOA is Me responses. You're gonna get that no matter what. Reopen that go fund me. I am like you, started flying at 40, never thought I could own a plane and got one. I'm very proud of it and cherish it same as you for 11years now. Open the GFM account again. I'll be glad to sew into your new found love. God can be Glorified in aviation too. Blessings.

My instructor and I were at altitude practicing slow flight in a 150 with 40 degrees flaps and they stuck down. We barely made the runway in a full power decent. It would not climb or maintain altitude at full power and it was winter weather. I never put in 40 degrees again after that.

My takeaway here is that a corn field would be a pretty viable option in an emergency/forced landing.

I had a relative back in the early 90s he was 102 years old and he was still flying. His name was Norm. I wouldn't let it affect you about doing a fundraiser like that it's all depends on what people want to support

Probable cause was failure to remove, clean, inspect, lubricate, then re-install the flap jack screw on an annual basis. Jack screws are notorious for sticking if proper maintenance isn't performed. 🤔🤨🤕

@wilco3588 1 year ago Why did the flaps stick? and @Ronzola1 1 year ago So, what was the malfunction with the flaps? Why is it still a mystery about the malfunction? I'd recommend that, since the airframe is being repaired to be put back into the air, it might be a good idea to figure out the failure. Otherwise someone's asking for the problem to occur again.

I remember Dan G saying in a video that he was going to help Matt with the repair. I think that would have been a good question to ask because it is part of the story. Has Dan G helped with the repair, either with $ or in some other way?

A lot of people don't understand. If that stall warning is going off, and you have full flaps, the LAST thing you want to do is BANK for a turn. It will add drag to the wing and you will spin in. Wings level is a must. I feel so sorry for this guy, but at least he survived. His daughter may not have. Personally, I don't understand why an aircraft is designed so it cannot climb, at least a little bit, with full flaps.

@kczbluesman
@kczbluesman 9 ай бұрын
There may be some other 150 owners that would like to know the cause so that maybe a potential crash burn and die could be avoided. It's normally the FAA that takes over a year to figure out the cause. Seriously, if they can't/don't figure it out, then they haven't rectified the issue to prevent it from happening again.

Something that stuck with me and still bothering me, is the authorities saying it's "their property now". Hmmm no sir. Not until that money is my account and the registration is changed. That's why so many crashed planes get the saw. Improper handling/removal.

Giving permission to hand prop a plane is different from swapping flight controls in a c150 imo. A close to max gross 150/52 with full flaps will barely hold altitude when straight & level on a hot day at sea level. Experienced this a couple times down in south FL while instructing in them. The worst time is after a Go-Around, gotta get that airspeed and then slowly climb and stay coordinated in shallow bank turns. Worst part was we’d land with adrenaline pumping and then do the after landing checklist… guess what, they’d retract 🙄
