Oh my gosh! As a student I had a hard landing in a Cessna 172, and my instructor gave me a look and said I landed hard. It was my first landing, and he just sprung it up on me.... I was probably at around 35 hours. When he gave me control, The stick was hard.... I tried to pull back at the right time but the tension was like hitting the brakes on a car with no power steering. That was the last time I flew out of DXR in 2001. This video re-invigorates me and I wish I could find my logbook as I has like over 35hrs at DXR. For the record though, the same plane with the same tag number is still flying..... But I never bounced... KEEP MAKING VIDEOS! I love them and hope to have the budget to resume getting my private pilot's license....

Hey Kelsey. Just a tip ;-) I am a heavy machine operator. I hear you say in some video's that you always watch all the accidents and mishaps to learn from them. This is exactly what I did for many years with dangerous machinery. I have always been right on top of my game and trained many young guys. I was always very calm. Never panic. Problem is that the last few years I have developed anxiety problems. I have seen so much of all that can go wrong and how big the consequences can be that it just became to much. With anything I do I automatically see in my mind what could go wrong and also the things I can't control 100%. I regret it now. I have quit operating any machines now and do only office work. I just wanted to mention that. I guess it's different for everyone but I had never expected that I would ever be stressed doing my job. At the end the stress became so bad it made me sick. Thanks for the funn channel! I only just discovered it but you've got a new fan!

I remember that JetBlue landing. It was on the news for hours before the landing attempt (burning fuel I guess) And Jetblue was relatively new (looks like they started operating as jetblue in 2000, this was 2005) Just for the pilot to grease it in on the centerline and come to a stop like it was nothing. I'm sure their PR department was absolutely thrilled that their pilot made it look like it was no big deal.

That was also when in-flight tv was first starting to appear on every seat back. We joked that the passengers must’ve been watching their own crash landing. It was also predicted that the nose gear would grab and turn the plane to the right or left. Not a chance! At that speed the plane will go straight no matter what.

I remember watching the JetBlue landing live after they circled to burn fuel for several hours, imagining how terrifying it was for the passengers to just have to wait for a possible crash landing. I was also still pretty young at the time, and having gone through so many devastating world events in the years prior (9/11, the Columbia space shuttle disaster, anthrax scares, the start to the War in Iraq, etc), I really believed we were about to watch all those people die on live TV. It sounds corny, but watching the landing go successfully almost renewed my belief that sometimes things turn out okay

It was a struggle to get her back in the runway which is why I was lifting the bad tire off of the ground. As I slowed I couldn't keep it off any longer and she started heading toward the weeds. A good friend had a new tire and inner tube and we flew her home later in the day." My apologies if someone already posted this earlier.

I enjoy your videos. In my past career I was a Los Angeles Fire Dept, EMS Supervisor. In my role I was routinely dispatched to LAX. I want to mention two notable cases and one humorous. 1. Flight from Mexico City to LAX. On takeoff, part of the starboard landing gear fell off. It was a Mexican airline. They flew to LAX 22R, on landing, I watched, they held the starboard wing high and did a two point touch down lofting the wing until speed was reduced. We were following the flight with Crash rigs. Finally they dropped the wing and landed safely. Some of the wheels were left in Mexico. 2. Flight coming into LAX, 22L. Reported failure to lock the nose gear, They went around once so the tower and other aircraft could see their gear. They came in and aggressively reverse thrusted, kept the plane level to a full stop then dropped the nose. The gear held, I can only try to imagine the passenger experience. They stopped so short all the waiting fire companies had to drive back down to the middle of the runway to reach them. 3. Okay this one is just for grins. I was driving around in LAX. A Chinese 747 started following me. (Red and White police car, no emergency lights on) To get them to stop, I drove to one of the large service hangars and parked close to its wall. I assume they thought I was an escort, They went away. Whew.

The turf runway was a softer choice, but harder (I would imagine) on the nosegear during a hard touchdown. Was that a Rans S6, or one of Randy Schlitter's other designs? To me it looks like aluminum skin, and I think all Rans planes are tube & rag. The reason I ask is because the Rans has no independent trim system, only a bungee to help you hold pressure on the elevator, which wasn't working. (If I only had an extra 10 grand in the bank - I LOVED that S6!) That guy did all right. It looks like something that would cause mild injuries, but he definitely kept it survivable. He (or she) sure got it nice and slow. It almost looked like he was thinking about doing a go-around at the end, and I wonder if he'd have made it if he'd kept the power up? Of course bouncing along on the ground probably feels a lot safer than launching a light sport plane with no elevator back into the sky. Who can even think in that very instant? As a 100-hour wonder, I had a pitot-static failure right after takeoff in a C172 (I hit a wasp, and it got stuck in the pitot tube when I was maybe 200' AGL), and I can really appreciate the difference between learning emergency procedures and having to stay calm enough to implement them, especially when I had a passenger I'd put in jeopardy. I was so scared I couldn't remember how to handle it, so I did a sorta procedure turn (ask me how I even knew what that was!), declared an emergency to local traffic (pattern was empty), and landed downwind (maybe 8 kts) on the same runway - the only procedure I knew I wasn't supposed to do - and at a screaming high speed. This pilot did a lot better than I did with his emergency. He had a really nice, stable approach for not having any elevator. My passenger and I landed uneventfully, touching down halfway down a 4000' paved runway, and I debriefed with two different instructors in the FBO, and despite all their kind words about getting down safely and how I did ok finding a solution that got me down, I knew inside that I'd lost my head and wasn't functioning. It's a GREAT teaching experience, and we should all screw up so badly and learn from it, if only we knew ahead of time we'd walk away and not kill anyone. I hope the pilot in that video was so lucky.

A combination of excessive speed and misjudging my height. Then one day my CFI asked me where I was looking while coming in. I was looking at the numbers. She told me to look farther down the runway. Then one day it all clicked.
@davidcruz86673 жыл бұрын
The landing with the nose gear sideways, that wasn't the tires burning up, that was the metal part of the wheel assembly. The runway surface chewed through the rubber plies on the tires first, then when it reaches the metal rims, the friction ignites them, since they're made out of a magnesium aloy, which is flamable, used on aircraft because it is both lightweight and quite strong as well as being easier to manufacture than a material such as titanium. It is stronger than aluminum and lighter than steel. So the reporter/narrator incorrectly identified the component that was on fire.

Second, I like your objective & respectful manner when talking about the mistakes these pilots have made. Having been there, you understand the learning corner (no curves here - lol) & the challenges taking place & seek to educate rather than embarrass. Great video. I was instructing once in a Cessna 177RG (Cardinal). Got a nose gear unsafe light. Did all the stuff, recycle, use emergency extension, low flyby at AP and they said it looked down properly. But I was worried down lock not engaged. So told student I had aircraft and did the keep nose off long as possible technique Kelsy speaks of, while having student pump emergency hydraulic handle. Best landing I've ever made. Nose finally comes down and gear holds like normal. It was one of the stinking micro-switches Cessna used on their complex retrac gear out of alignment. Gear was actually fine, but I was expecting it to collapse. Things can certainly go wrong fast when flying. Great job by Jet Blue pilots.

The first time I have, or can, make a slight correction of 74 Gear! I got tailwheel certified in a Decathalon & was taught both wheel landings and 3 point landings. 74 Gear said to land on the main wheels first, which is fine in a taildragger, but the normal landing is done on all 3 wheels/gears at the same time with a tailwheel airplane.

"Triangle landing gear"? Is that kind of like the chin gear? :-)

Yes it's next to the arms that extend from the hull with the motors attached ;) I think they call them wings. Is that right? Can our research people check? Oh screw it, we've a story to run.
@elrondmcbong4674 ай бұрын
The Jet Blue crew did everything exceptionally fine. They touched down smooth as butter, and they used all the available space to minimise stress on the nose wheel. This wasn't just a text book example on how to land with a busted most wheel but probably the smoothest landing so far, for many of the passengers.

Yup, I've done the pogoing before at flight school. I think it's a right of passage for a pilot :) Thanks Kelsey for making me feel old. I remember that JetBlue landing, but didn't feel like nearly 16 years ago! And I think tail dragger may have bust a tire when it failed to takeoff. There was a puff of vapour/smoke when that starboard gear hit the deck again. That might have contributed to it being dragged into the dirt.

Can you do a GTA series where you try to land all of the aircrafts in the game at various locations?
@jamesclark43882 жыл бұрын
Referencing the JetBlue landing @7:50 When I was in the USAF back in the 70's - 80's I use to watch some pilot or pilots keep their C-130 on the main gears way longer than usual. I was told that that was how they landed them on grass strips like in Vietnam.
@segredosdotiosam99894 жыл бұрын
Fun fact about the JetBlue landing gear thing. Back then, JetBlue was the only airline with live TV and passengers saw the landing live from inside the plane. Imagine that. If something went wrong they could watch their own deaths on TV as it happens. Mind blowing.
@chocolate_squiggle3 жыл бұрын
Surely the passengers should have all been in the emergency brace position? I doubt the pilots would have allowed that to be shown - it would be too distracting and delay any passenger compliance. -update - Yes it seems they watched themselves burning fuel but it was turned off before actual landing. They didn't watch the landing live from inside the plane.
@roberteltze48503 жыл бұрын
Failed takeoff at 9:20, you can see foothills in the background. I don't know where this was but if it was in Colorado it could be well over 5000 ft so I wouldn't completely discount elevation as a factor.
@Pearcemas3 жыл бұрын
I happened to be at this small airshow when this happened. It was in Vacaville CA. The elevation is somewhere around 150'. It was in early September with temps around 80. I think it was a weight issue. They were taking paying customers up for short flights.

Correction: if you're in a taildragger, you really want to try for the three-point landing, all three at the same time. This is part of why it's considered more challenging. You still flare, but you need to do it in such a way that you touch down all three wheels as close to at the same time as possible. If you land on the main wheels only, you're very likely to bounce, due to the way the weight loading differs (ie the main wheels on a tail dragger are forward of the centre of mass, usually pretty far forward as well, not on it or just behind like in a tricycle config). This actually adds the forward momentum of the plane to the loading on the gear, causing a bounce, and why you have to shift the centre of mass to the rear by flaring for a three-pt touchdown.
