@@jala5528I have nothing to think positively about. however, it can blind you. if you haven't noticed, we have all this luxury thanks to the EU. Poland is ruled by voters by politicians. Due to the political situation, many EU funds are blocked. The TSUE is blocking a lot of money by the actions of our government. I know it's politics and the channel leader doesn't want to touch it with a 10m stick. personally I am not surprised. I'm not complaining, I'm just trying to present a point of view.

Politics in a representative republic get messy. There is a lot of bickering and arguing....but you have the freedom to do it. I pointed out that ALL of my great grandparents on my dad's side fled partitioned Poland...Warsaw and Krakow. Things are a lot better now than then. Life has it's problems and challenges everywhere.

Not true about the sunlight. If the ground is yours, the sky belongs to you too. You still have to adhere to the city planning regulations though. The old building represents no value what so ever. Some crazy people are blocking its demolition. You wouldn't find absurdities like that in the US because people in the US have enough sense not to preserve old garbage only because the brick is 100+ years old.

It's a shame though that most of the buildings you will find on those streets are barely shadows of their past selves. During communism most of the buildings beautiful fronts, beautiful sculptures and decorations were clipped down to make them fit 'working man' aesthetics, and less 'bourgeoisie'. It's a real shame, but slowly some of them are getting back at least some of it's former flair as they are being renovated, eg Foksal 13 and 15.

I did try Francisco Galarraga's Argentinian empanadas (Chimi&Churri) at Grzybowska street (probably the one that you mentioned) and I confirm, it's a must. Now, if you want to try REAL local traditional street food, go to "Pyzy, Flaki Gorące" at Podwale street 5 (close to the Old Town). They serve food in jars! I recommend in particular the delicious Warsaw-style beef tripes with meatballs. As for exploring Warsaw centre, don't miss the area to the south of Aleje Jerozolimskie (Koszykowa, Emilii Plater, Lwowska streets), it's one of the few places that escaped total destruction during WW2. You'll have a glimpse of the pre-war 19th-century Warsaw (tenement houses) that is largely gone in other parts of the city. And, why not explore the "exotic" Warsaw? I suggest two Asiatic markets: at Bakalarska street and the biggest one, Marywilska 44. Attention: the latter has what IMO is Warsaw's best Asian food court.

Love the Rondo ONZ, Grzybowska and Mirów. Blend in, respect for neighbourhood, I would never suspect I would say that about my city! City of Warsaw! That's it folks. Check the InterContinental hotel building, how it allows the older buildings access to day light... IMHO it is a grace period, sooner or later you will find some problems specifically in Śródmieście Płd./Płn. e.g. is dehumanisation of the ground level at the Aleje Jerozolimskie , Marszałkowska, Chmielna - are deserted, every 2nd shop is 7/11 or specifically Alko24h shop or Kebap. Almost no regular business, shops or restaurants, bars, cafeterias ( I think even chain ones are migrating). '90, '00 you would find an infinite stream of people on those wide pavements. That is the price of malls and places like Norblin, Browary or Hala Koszyki - I still count it will change. Love Warsaw!

I love your feelings, your observations while wandering streets of Warsaw. It's so refreshing for the one born and raised here. The eye of a stranger, an outsider. And you are, no offence. But if you both will decide, that my city is the place to live for longer you should - no, you MUST - dig deeper into it's history, Then you'll undestand why we have so mish-mashed architectural styles here, why the Old Town in Warsaw is the youngest Old Town in the world. Visit some museums. Obligatory - Warsaw Museum at the Old Town Square and Museum of Warsaw Uprising (Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego) at Grzybowska 79 (more ul. Przyokopowa). And if wou'll happen to be on the the other side of the river - Muzeum Warszawskiej Pragi (Warsaw's Praga Museum) at Targowa 50/52. And one more museum - the one in lifetime experience - Polin Museum (History of Polish Jews Museum) at Anielewicza 6, the Warsaw's Ghetto area during WW2. Reserve 5-6 hours for this one. Good luck to you both and i hope your child's first breath will be of Warsaw's air.

Little Manchester 4 Zalew zegrzyński. The lake resort north to Warsaw 5 Twierdza Modlin. The biggest brick barrack construction ever build, former russian fortrece made to control Warsaw in 19th century, close to zalew zegrzyński 6 termal pools and aquapark in Wręcza close to Żyrardów 7 another termal pools in Mszczonów and wineyard in dwórzno few kilometers away from Wręcza and Mszczonów 8 Płock. You should visit Srodmiescie where you will find old style villas, low level apartment buildings and tenement houses , i.e arround US Embassy, streets like Piekna, Wilcza, Hoza, Mokotowska, Krucza, Aleja Roz. Srodmiescie district is built in style of 50 and 60 called "modernism" and socrealism and it can be very interesting. After that you can hop on a tram or metro and go to the Old Mokotow district, where you have lots of residential houses and villas, and going further south you will end up at Ursynow, where there a lots of 10-12 stories apartment building built in the 80s, but whole district is very nicely planned with a lots of green and space between every apartment building. P.S Love your insights into my home town and your comments about Warsaw :)

You mention Śródmieście Południowe, and while it's true some of the buildings are socrealistic in their nature, it is not the whole story. Some of the buildings have been rebuilt after the war on the old plot with same space, some were burned inside but had walls standing. After the war the beautiful XIXc. decorations were clipped down because they were deemed 'too bourgeoisie' for the 'working man'. And now you have gray, plastered, straight walls where once were beautiful façades with sculptures, fancy balconies and nice tiles and decorations. From time to time there are 'city walks' organized by varsavianists

There's plenty of Warsaw from 40/50 years ago in old polish tv series: Czterdziestolatek or Zmiennicy. I don't know if there's an option with eglish subtitles but they are sort of comedy and real time travel machines to Poland in the 70ties 80ties.

Check it out, you will be surprised :) ) Zapiecek at Freta street (delicious Polish cuisine, a very cosy spot), Thaisty (thai of course), Charlotte (French bistro, excellent pastries and some French lunch staples, there are three Charlotte restaurants in town), Manekin (very cheap and tasty savoury and sweet pancakes, two restaurants in the city), Pacyfik and Kraken Bar (two cool bars close to each other, Pacyfik serves excellent modern mexican dishes and interesting drinks), Shoku (asian fusion, great ramen), Koreanka (traditional Korean), Hala Koszyki and Elektrownia Powiśle for a choice of bars and small food stalls), Pełną Parą (excellent modern asian food), ok, i’ll spare you, cause I think I could go on for an hour…

About the balconies, we used to do the same in Portugal (closing them for storage and avoid trashing/dust flying over) but in the last 10 years new marquises (the name in Portuguese) were forbidden. But the ones that were done, were grandfathered in. They make buildings very ugly, specially because people choose the colors and the type of glass without considering architectural and design perspectives.

Regarding this mix of old and modern. This is the result of post-war history. Warsaw as a result of the Uprising, and then the regular demolition of the entire infrastructure by the germans, Warsaw was razed to the ground. During the times of the Polish People's Republic, the communists rebuilt Warsaw but not entirely and thats why is a place for this new development.
