I agree with you about the seed packets; pictures are a must! That's funny about the carrots as I still do that! I haven't enough patience when it comes to carrots for some reason. Perhaps because they are one of my favorites. Based on your review of Everwild seeds I have just placed a nice order for my mothers Easter bracket ... I live in Florida but she lives up in the northeast . I was thrilled when I got to the website because it was so easy to do. All I had to do is put her ZIP Code in and it showed me all the flowers that would grow just fine where she lives. She’s now 84 and all she has to do is sow them in the ground and she likes to be outside. I look forward to seeing them grow for her. Thank you ! so much for reviewing them as it was spot on ....cheers!

It took me 2 years to decide on buying the soil blockers, but I am so glad I did, I love them! You only have to purchase them once, make your own potting mix and it is WAY cheaper in the end. Very nice video as always! Its surprising that seed companies are not focusing on the fact that many people especially younger up and coming gardeners are not reading as much as they are driven by images. I am more artistic and also images speak to me. I usually buy seeds that have a map of the US so I know the planting times. I like to know how many seeds are in a packet too and the basic requirements like light, height, planting depth and if they need more or less water to grow. Knowing ease of growing is also a big help as is soil type. Nice video. Im planting a cottage cutting garden this year in a new space created by a potting shop my husband has been building off of the garage for me. By the way I love how you repurpose things like the old coffee pot to water. I do the same as I like all things old. One of my favorite “tools” to pot up annuals is a well worn old large bowl serving spoon from about 1910 that has a gorgeous flower on the handle.

I agree 100%. I want a good photo along with clear, accurate and relevant instructions. Hudson Valley sells art packs with gorgeous artwork. Most of my seeds this year came from Baker Creek. I, too, had the Johnnys seed catalog and the price and lack of photos was a deal breaker and I never placed my order. I watch other YT gardeners from UK and Europe and some of them get a plant label inside their seed packs! Wouldn't that be great! Gardening supplies overall, even factoring in the exchange rate, is quite a bit cheaper there and they also seem to get better choices.

Jeri, this vlog was such perfect timing for me! I literally planted my first cutting garden seeds directly outdoors yesterday (zone 8a). I had a very difficult time figuring out how I wanted everything tied together. It was phase 1 of a 5 piece area. I’ve never done a cutting garden...so this will be interesting. I’ve been growing some more tender seeds indoors since the beginning of February and just began hardening them off in this last week. But yesterday I planted (from seed) phlox, bachelor’s buttons, love-in-a-mist, bunny tail grass, dwarf cosmos, sweet alyssum, godetia, penstemon and last but not least...Chinese lanterns for the fall. Whew! That is the front of the border (phase one) done. Now on to 4 more! Yikes! What was I thinking? LOL! You are such an inspiration for me however... I love your relaxed gardening style & I could listen to you describe gardening for hours. I agree about seed packets. I have literally bought from EVERY company you showed. I really LOVE Floret’s web site, her lovely book and all the info she shares on social media...but was so disappointed in the seed packet. The information was well thought out...but I’d love to have a real photo of the pretty blooms I fell in love with. Her farm is located just a few towns away from me here in the Pacific Northwest. Her farm is amazing! Anyway, I digress.... I wish you all the best moving forward with your seedlings. Let us know how you like the soil blocker...a review might be nice. I can’t wait for Part 2 of your cutting garden. Thanks for all the hard work you put into doing your videos...I enjoy them SO MUCH!! 💕

Oh Trisha I am so impressed! You've done a marvelous planting, I'm sure the results will be breathtaking no matter what the design was, sounds so great! Yes, I love Florets book and would LOVE to visit her farm, so when I got the seed packet it was a real let-down; to make matter worse, the seeds are not germinating at a good rate....drat. I will surely do a review on the seed-blocker, so far I like it a lot, haven't used any of my trays.

I'm so happy you gave a nod to MiGardner. I've watched his videos on KZbin for years and feel like I've watched him grow from a young teen to a man who is now married and a proud papa! I've always been highly impressed with his knowledge of botany and his willingness to be candid and forthright in telling about his failures. And who hasn't had failures...or as I prefer to think of them , " trials" ? I want to see him and his young family grow and prosper. And I have to agree with you about the packaging. I purchased some seeds through Ebay from a company in China. The package arrived just fine BUT I have two packages of mystery seeds because not only is there not a photograph of the flower on the packages there isn't even a NAME! I have no idea what the seeds are but I suspect they are some kind of poppy judging from the look of the seeds. Oh well.....I've always like surprises so I guess we'll just wait and see what if anything comes up! : )

@@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow I cannot remember which KZbinr it was but she made a very good point that if you can harvest seeds from your own garden they will have the DNA to survive and do much better. I currently have saved Cosmos, Zinnia, Stock, Tithonia. I scattered five pkts of California poppies and not one has come up. The US appears to have so much choice (as does the UK) and yet from what I can gather not a decent gardening show on TV. Just as well we have you Jeri ❤
@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow5 жыл бұрын
@@flowerfairy1950 Maybe that's why the self seeders do the best in our gardens. Don't give up on the sown poppy seeds, they may surprise you after a cold spell and suddenly appear all at once! The US doesn't have many gardening shows, as far as I know, ( I don't watch TV). 20 years ago, we had countless garden shows. I do like P.Allen Smith and Martha Stewart videos. The thing is, they have mountains of money and hired help to grow their gardens so it's a bit unrealistic for me to think I could EVER have gardens like they do! But it's fun to watch them anyway.

Well I love MIgardener but I worked for a seed company and they worked w/ growers who grew just for them not other companies. I too have an attitude about seed packets! Going to check out Everwilde Farms - haven't heard of them.
@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow5 жыл бұрын
Cynthia, I guess you would know having worked at the seed company! It does seem that some companies have better germination rates than others, but I usually chalk that up to old seed vs new. Since MIG sells seeds, he probably does buy them from a distributor, but maybe not all distributors will sell to companies that are not in their zone?

Giddy and excited. I can't wait to see them all up and smiling at the sun for you. Doggone it, if you weren't right about the Poppy seeds in my seed tray!! And one thing that is frustrating me about my seed packets right now is they don't always have the height information. Once again, I’m thinking as I watch your gardening videos, “Dang it! She’s already planting this or transplanting that” and missing my window of opportunity for optimal planting times. We’re in the same zone, I think, here in north GA. Slackers like me need a GWM (garden with me...instead of the GRWM videos like the beauty yiutubers do. This is me being cheeky haha). GWM videos in near real-time as seasonal tasks approach might keep us more on schedule. If I consider taking anyone’s gardening advice, it would be yours bc I’ve seen the results of how you do it. Dreamy and deceptively wild-looking beauty, you make it look easy and inspire me to try harder. I just always seem a day late and a dollar short, as my daddy used to say.

Love your videos. When you transplant your seedlings or sow directly into the garden. How do you water?
@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow5 жыл бұрын
Water your seeds daily until they germinate. After that, let the soil go dry before you water again. Once the seedlings are established, I just let the rain do it's job. Just take a clue from nature and all will be well.

I love watching your garden and I love your art. How do you handle weeds in the cutting garden. You pull them all?
@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow5 жыл бұрын
Holly, If you start your garden with the "no DIG" method, ( cover the earth in cardboard, wet it, pile on about a foot of COMPOST) you won't have many weeds at all. If your garden already exists, just mulch very heavily around your plants using compost. Weeds will always appear in our gardens, no matter what we do, but these methods help reduce the weeds. Still, have to keep weeding out the villains when they appear!

I know I am a year late commenting on this video but I am wondering about the sweet peas. I have read that they are so toxic that I should not plant them where I have chickens that could eat the flowers or seeds. Since I see you have chickens etc I am wondering about your thoughts and experience on them because I very much would love to grow them.
@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow4 жыл бұрын
I know they are toxic to humans, but animals seem to have an instinct about eating poisonous plants. My chickens never ate them.

Hi Jeri: I find it interesting you are using peat in your mix. BBC Gardeners World, Monty Don, Alan Titchmarsh etc all advocate not using peat as peat bogs are being devastated. I haven't actually investigated here in Australia if potting mixes contain peat; this I will have to do. I certainly now use organic composts and fertilisers (if my worm farms let me down - it looks as if my worms did not survive the devastating heat in Feb/March even though the farms are in the shade - I keep hoping to see a few survivors). I have to confess even though I would like to start a cutting garden, I hate cutting flowers, silly I know! When he worked, my husband used to bring me a bunch of flowers each week (from a local market) and always commented why was he buying me flowers when I had better ones in the garden! (This was when we lived on Phillip Island.) Sorry I am waffling! As usual always enjoy your gardening videos.

You are right. Peat has been a big no no in the UK for a couple decades now due to the environmental impact. When they first started talking about this, there was a big debate amongst the established gurus, but they have all come down now on the side of no peat. They tend to use a lot of coco fiber as one of the replacements. I don't know why peat is still widely used here except that it is effective. Monty is using the soil blocker, too, as a way to cut down on plastics. I keep intending to save loo rolls, but somehow keep forgetting.

Our peat comes from Peat Farms in Canada. Gardeners in US use a lot of Peat because the source is renewable, unlike the British Peat Bogs. I understand how you feel about cutting flowers from the garden, it's hard to do! That's why I will be planting Large areas of the same flowers, so that it won't be noticeable when I cut some. BUT, the thing is, the more you cut some flowers, the more they produce... we have to convince ourselves of this fact.

@@Gigi-fv9ky I always wondered why they were so ANTI- PEAT in Britain, so I did some research. That's when I realized where OUR peat comes from. It's pretty interesting to see the Peat farms in Canada, You can watch Canadian peat farm videos online.
