I am nearly 25, I've been reading for more than a decade, and I am only just now figuring out how to pick out a book I'll like! Crazy! I grew up going to the library and just picking out anything that looked remotely good. Now as an adult with access to multiple libraries, and money, I'm finally learning which genres and subgenres I really enjoy reading! And I finally am able to admit that I love romance!

I always struggle with choosing the time to read or write, when I read I feel guilty as I think I should be writing but when I'm writing so often I feel I need to read more to improve my writing, it a never-ending stress that I have yet to find a solution too.

Most writers read and write at the same time. Write a bit the read a while to get in the mood - you juggle reading and writing like we do the modes .

I have the same struggle! Something I’m doing is reframing that guilt. Reading is good for my mental state. Just because it doesn’t get me closer to publishing my work doesn’t mean it’s not productive.

I used to tab books (for a little bit) but then I wouldn’t remember which part specifically about the passage I wanted to remember, so even though I used to not be okay with it, now I do fully underline things in books. Sometimes I write in them too if its a couple words (if i have more to say i use a sticky note), but especially if it’s a book I knowI I’ll love or keep or something like that then I really enjoy annotating it because it feels like I can see how much I enjoyed the book when I look back at it

It's officially past the summer solstice but I'm still doing spring cleaning. I did a crapton of laundry this morning and somehow despite the heat and sweat, I was stricken with such basic animal glee when I pulled my sheets and towels out of the dryer. I do take pictures of lines I love in books I borrow from the library, read online, and even own!!! It's useful and I like having them all with me wherever I go.

It's not one of your questions but if you like history but prefer it more individualized, usually anthropology centered storytelling is more enjoyable. Currently reading House of Rain by Craig Childs and it is very much an intimate approach to nonfiction and history. Robert Sapolsky's A Primate's Memoir is similar but the anthropology approach to biology. Any books I own I'll usually mark up because I enjoy getting marked up used books. Books that have personal histories are a bit like old houses. A little haunted and atmospheric. Library books I'll usually write up interesting sections in a notebook I keep random notes in. And yes, there are definitely reading moods, themes and general vibes ❤

I'm getting ready for baby but am failing at some of my spring-ish cleaning goals. I'm trying. I've been slumping a little in books lately. I really enjoyed "The Brighter the Light" by Mary Ellen Taylor. I gave it 5 stars and I rarely do that. I've been doing a few reread that I haven't read since I started my Good Reads account and those have been good because I haven't read them in almost 15 years. I'm still feeling slumpy.

I guess my most recent read is Pride and Prejudice, and I'm just learning that I'm a much slower reader than I used to be, lmao. I'm taking time to 'review' each chapter for my previously-a-podcast-but-now-just-blog idea, which is a read-along kind of thing. I've also been working a lot and working on a long-term project, so I actually had to push back the due date for the book using the library app on my phone. I don't remember /ever/ having to do that before. And I am 100% a mood reader. The vibe must be right for me to start something. I prefer short chapters, but I'm also of the mind that each story needs its own length and to have long or short chapters only is kind of constricting. If I own the book, I tend to underline. If I don't own the book, i use a little notebook and write everything I like down. I guess you could call it a commonplace book. I haven't reviewed a book I think ever, but I'm planning on doing so. Maybe a rating system, like out of 5 stars or something. And I don't really do the whole 'make rigid plans based on months/quarters' thing, though I really should. Whenever I try, I always get discouraged when I fall behind. Like, making the plan is soothing but the second I have to change it I get stressed out. So loose plans work better for me personally. I like watching all of your experiments, but I think I like the shorter-form ones a smidge better. I haven't replicated any of them yet, but I have a whole list lmao. Thanks for sharing, this video was fun!

I've just started actually planning my goals. I don't really believe in the quarterly system, I don't feel it's really a natural division of time. I do think I prefer seasons, but I'm also into astrology and when I start to feel the urge to change goals or add another one I revisit the goals work with the astrological movement instead. As for lines from books, I've been experimenting with a commonplace book. I copy by hand the lines that I want to keep. I've been really enjoying that. But I try not to do that too much while I'm actually reading because it adds a "to-do" to my relaxing time.

I would love to write a essay book, I even have a title for one if I ever do. It would be called 'Manic Pixie Fat Boi' which yes I love it. Also yes I do something take photos of pages I love or connect with. However a large portion of my reading is in audiobooks so if I get to something I love I might just pass for a moment and absorbe those words, re listen to them or even write them down.

I do think authors overuse the back-and-forth between past and present technique too often lately. And even beyond authors, like TVs and movies have been doing them too often, too, and I'm not that big a fan, either. I only liked them a bit at first when they were done in an original way and now they're usually unnecessary and drags the whole plot.
