My son bought me this plant for Christmas. I live in Phoenix AZ. I love the beautiful red pitchers it makes. Thanks for making such a beautiful plant.

I ordered a little x catesbaei BH a month ago and it has grown an 8" pitcher with the most beautiful coppery top 😀

Can you make a video on how to ID sarracenias? I bought a bunch of unnamed rhizomes last Fall and have been trying to figure out what they are as the pitchers grow but I'm having no luck.

I’ll add it to the list! It’s a little hard because a lot of IDing them comes from a deep familiarity with them but we can share some tips on how to tell species apart and let features of those species!

Did the sarracenia "Billy Hoyer" originate from Bob Hanrahan? Do you ever think about all of the plants that have been sold and are now uncultivated? Because it was only by luck that he returned his collection that we know of this clone.

“Bill Hoyer” is a plant that Damon selected out of many seed-grown flava for its copper top and great height

There's something I've been wondering about hybrids with purpurea features. How do you tell if they require water to be added to the pitcher? At what dilution of purpurea features do the pitchers transition from needing water added, to just excreting enzymes along the wall of the pitcher tube where the prey comes to rest like most Sarracenias? Can intentional hybrids have this mechanism disrupted in a manner that causes trouble catching and digesting prey? Is it just a matter of "If the new hybrid's pitchers catch water on their own, then that's what they need", or is it more complicated?

It is likely that any hybrid will be less good at catching bugs because you have two species with intricate relationships to prey. Then in one generation, they are combined. In some rare instances, this may make it better but usually since it’s quickly combing traits, it will probably make a plant with some problems. We do not worry too much about filling the pitchers with fluid but it isn’t a bad idea to over head water from time to time to add a little water to these pitchers
