I watched you since the beginning but somehow missed this episode until today. Thanks for the laugh with your song. I use 55 gal plastic drums laid on their side on nice elevated stands that my DH kindly built me. We cut the upper 3rd off and attach it with hinges, add a drain, put in a layer of drainage rocks, covered with landscape fabric, then a thick bedding of moist cardboard - worms love it. If ants start to get into the bins, I simply paint a thin strip of orange oil on the rim with my finger - ants hate orange oil.

Thanks for the video and laugh! I’ve been wanting to expand to an outside bin but some concern with winter and summer months. I have a shaded area in mind yet it gets humid on East Coast of VA zone 8A. I’ve considered a partial buried bin for better insulation but keeping my old back in mind.

Place several, cut in half avocados onto the surface of the castings. After a day you will notice worms gathering under the avocado halves.everyday after you will be able to scoop up with your hand a big handful of worms. Do this once a day for as many days as you would like. I got 16 hand fulls of worm in four days with two avocados. And it's still giving

Hey Dan thanks for sharing. I have a small bin setup in my garage DIY system similar to a worm tower with stackable layers. I also have an old cast iron tub I was thinking of turning into a new larger farm. I wonder about the winter months. I made the tower setup with the thought of bringing it inside during the winter. But I like the idea of a larger farm moving forward (more room for kitchen scraps) I guess I have a few questions for you (in order of most concern :) 1. What are your thoughts about winter months outside if I switch to a tub setup. I live in Canada (zone 5) 2. Do you get a lot of fruit flies or fungus nats? I found with my small bin I can't add too much food at once or the flies show up. I thought the bigger farm setup might help with this. I could burry the food deeper? 3. Do you worry about food ratio to worms when feeding. I feel like I don't have enough worms to process the weekly food scraps I have. 4. how often do you feed your worms. Love your channel Dan. Cheers!

I've recently discovered your channel and wanted you to know how much I appreciate you guys doing these videos! How do you deal with hot summers? I live in the Sonoran Desert, where we will have usually a month over 100 degrees daily. We rarely drop below freezing in the winter. Any suggestions on keeping my worms alive during these extreme hot periods. I've heard some here say to bring your bins inside or know that you'll have to start over each fall. Thank you so much!

Hi there! Do you put all your compost scraps into this bin? Or how often? Do you need to turn it, etc or do the worms really do all the work? Thanks!

What did you line your bathtub with? I have started a bathtub composting bin and it has not built up to that level yet. I'm trying to figure out how to keep the worms from freezing over the winter.
@plantabundance
@plantabundance 3 жыл бұрын
It's lined with an old trampoline. A roll of window screen will work but it is more fragile and prone to tear. If you're careful and use a rounded ice scooper instead of a garden trowel when working material in the bin it should be fine. As long as the material being used is porous enough to allow the leachate to drain away from the bedding you're good. I have a layer of river rock between the liner and the bottom of the tub which allows all the liquid to easily drain out the drainage hole in the bottom of the tub. A waterproof seedling heat mat works great at keeping a warm zone in the worm bin during the Winter that the worms will gravitate to. Just make sure it doesn't get too hot, especially in a smaller set-up. A temperature controller can also be linked to the heat mat to dial in the perfect temp.

I've been watching and thinking that maybe smaller, separate containers might work better for me. I am disabled and have back issues. Just move 🐛 worms from one bin to another and harvest the contents.

i mean only problem is, harvesting a bucket of the stuff, you get really stingy and emotional letting it go, you know how expensive the stuff is and contemplate even using it lol, i end up buying shop bought cheap compost and using that instead.
