I never took the plastic issue into consideration when it comes to my plants. I'm still using some that are 30 years old. I'm getting rid of them now!! Your video has really made me rethink about the plastics I'm using. My plants & I thank you. 🙏😊

I’ve been converting my collection (except succulents & cactus) into clear plastic ventilated pots with a cotton string and putting them in a cover pot. I’m naturally an overwaterer but when I have a chronic illness flare then I underwater. It’s been so helpful to have the option to treat them like self-watering pots when I get worse, but be able to fuss w them when I feel well enough & water regularly (no water in the cover pot).

Clear pot FTW, I add holes in the side of the pot in the 1/3 of the bottom for air pruning and don’t have root bound anymore and I put the pot in a decorative cache pot! 💛 very Nice reminder 💛 Gardening Canada is so useful !

Thank you so much for the information about the plastic cups and pots. I too have been using the plastic cups for my plants, but I don't think I have had them in them long enough to have them decline over time. I will be more mindful from now on about what I use for my plants and myself💚.

I really liked this video, Drea! Never thought about the type of plastics for plants even though I do for food. Huh! Luckily I mostly just use the nursery pots, not found items when do use plastic but can't be sure if they are 100% okay to use either as they also eventually crack. Also, that ceramic pot with plug drainage hole- i learned that the hard way. Now I let that plant get suuuuuper dry before I dare water it again.

Wanted to mention the clear pots with silicone bottoms. Those are really bad for your plant. @soberplantguy did a vid on those. Apparently, everything he planted in those eventually rotted. I’m a clear pot inside decorative pot girly and it’s been great for my plants. I did notice that if I don’t put a cover pot over my clear pots the roots of some my plants grow straight to the bottom very fast. To get away from the light maybe? Idk. Love the clear pots though. Really helps me water my plants when they need it.

Gah! I listened to this episode while playing computer solitaire and idly wondered how a plant newbie would be able to absorb the myriad variables in pot selection. I lost two plants because I overwatered and had potted them directly into a pot (I was lazy). Since then I use plastic nursery pots and chug them into the nice overpots. I also add granulate at the bottom of my overpots to suck up any excess water exiting the plastic ones with the added bonus that it stabilises the nursery pots and gives them more height. I always choose the overpots a size too big so I can take out planst more easily, but then the nursery pots sit too low for my liking. Hence the granulate :D

I couldn't tell you how many times I've ruined surfaces of our timber furniture and am even cautious of using the cover pots with plugs because THEY LEAK!!! The pots I'm still using with the plugs have been sealed with a hot glue gun and tested several times until I'm certain they no longer leak.

I’m an under waterer. I use”planta” app. It helps me know when to water. I do have the option to skip or snooze it as needed. You can Also water sooner if it needs to stay moister. Which I do but this keeps me from skipping a plant that is hiding behind another.

I think in the U.S. the "good" recycle plastic is #7 often used as the bottles you buy with water. It was a long time ago so it might be the opposite and be plasric to avoid.
@AlohaPlantLife10 күн бұрын
Currently #7 aren’t recyclable and the category is a catch-all for other plastics that weren’t mentioned in the video, most of which aren’t used in the food and beverage industry.

Would roots get stuck by growing through the holes on the clear plastic planters that have holes up the sides? I haven't heard of anyone having that issue. I was just wondering. :)
@AlohaPlantLife6 күн бұрын
When they grow through those holes, they get what’s called air pruned. This basically means the end that grows through the hole shrivels up and dies off, so kind of like if you trimmed it off, but it happens naturally. So, no, it doesn’t cause a problem when removing them from the pot.💚

@AlohaPlantLife10 күн бұрын
I’m pretty sure those silicone “planters” a few of you are mentioning are actually moulds for use in making concrete planters and not intended for use as an actual planter, but maybe there’s something else I’m unaware that is what you all are talking about. If it is something else send me a link if you can please.
