I totally agree with Laura's desire to expand the garden beyond the strip at the fence. At our New Orleans house,, my husband looked at the backyard and asked, "Didn't we use to have grass back here?" I had planted a courtyard garden and, instead of grass, had a small ciircle of pine straw mulch for lawn chairs. Everything else was planted with roses, a lemon tree, some Japanese maples azaleas, etc. He hadn't noticed because he was plugged into his computer and music system.

I have a hard time identifying what insect even when I see it ; what kind it is and then what’s best to use. Even bugs you don’t deal with but a lot of gardeners do? Your brain seems a vast knowledge well and I trust you to know! Also I miss your decorating videos like you did when doing a red; white and blue set up in the gazebo. Ones like that also!

I love your garden! It is so nice to see a garden that would not look out of place here in England. Hostas are so much more forgiving than people realise. A few years ago I decided my over large self seeded sycamore (basically a weed here) had to go. The tree surgeons worked in December, and trampled the area of my hostas to a similar consistency to concrete. Despite this, the hostas sent up shoots in the spring and put on their best show that year, despite having lost their shade. This year has been rather "moist" even for England, and they have produced the biggest leaves ever. They grow through a dense ground cover of geranium which shades their roots and prevents drying out and slug attacks.

They were new to me this year, too. I was looking for tough, colourful foliage, evergreen if possible, shade plants and came across Bergenia in my research. Miss Piggy is nice but personally I prefer the colours of the variety I believe is called Winter Glow (although I have not planted these myself yet). I also found a shade loving foliage plant called Mukdenia (there’s a nice one called “crimson fans” I believe) and Mukgenia which is a cross between a Mukdenia and a Bergenia, eg Mukgenia Nova Flame. I’m in Canada (not sure where you are) so this website may not ship to you but just as a research tool to find unusual plants, I’ve been using a site called Phoenix Perennials. He sources rarer plants. Never ordered from him so can’t attest to quality (plants seem expensive for the size) but it sure was a useful resource to find new plants I had never thought of before. Happy planting!!! 🌱

@@persephonespomegranate I’m in Ontario (TO 6a/6b); I’ve never ordered online preferring to “rush” to the local nursery to see what I can score! 🤣 I tried a couple of Bergenias a few years ago thinking they’d be perfect for a moist shady area but they struggled mightily from the start; I gave them everything I could think of but they eventually fizzled out … I didn’t even have to dig them out; I couldn’t find them anywhere. 🤪🤪

Another name for it is "Pig Squeak." Rubbing the leaves together does produce a squeaking sound. 🐷 Mine has spread quite a bit. I thinned it out several years ago and left some pieces sitting on some dirt-filled gravel and that is thriving. I need to divide it again. I've always heard the pronunciation as "Brrr ghee na" (like the clarified butter) not "gee" as Laura says. 😊

Everything you do is just perfection! I wish I had a larger garden and an area in which to use a variety of hostas! I grew up with Bergenia, my mom loved them, so I always thought they were such ordinary plants. In recent years I have gained a new appreciation for them and now would like some in my own garden. The ones you planted look beautiful! Here in California they do attract slugs and snails. Nice that you don’t deal with that very much! I so love this channel and you are so inspirational! Thank you!

I have a hosta garden in a strip on the north side of my garage with crushed rock path adjacent to it. I enjoy playing off the myriad of hosta leaf colors and textures and punctuating with other perennials and annuals. I love the look of 'Sweet Tea' heucherella nestled with the bold 'Guacamole' hosta (or is it 'Stained Glass'?), finely textured rue anemone and begonias. But thistles keep ruining the show. Ugh! I planted 'Empress Wu' a couple years ago. It's taking it's sweet time getting as big as the tag shows, but then Laura advised us they grow in relation to the amount of water they get and my hose doesn't really make it to that end of my garden.

All that green REALLY cools the area and looks so beautiful! Having a larger bed will provide a big variety of conditions in one bed to work around and Help Us do the same. Looking forward to that!

It was 8pm when I started watching this video and I had to pause to go plant about 14 plants in my yard. You inspire me 😁

I’m nervous to plant under trees because I heard it can harm the tree. I think it has to do with smothering the roots. Any advice? You don’t have an issue with planting under trees.

I would place annuals among the new Hosta to fill in the gaps and do that for the couple of years it takes for the Hosta to reach a larger size.

I wonder if they didn't spend much time in that area because it was originally the only section with neighbors. Now, the other side is filled with neighbors. Could be why they purchased the new property as a buffer from encroaching neighbors. Now this side seems, relatively, the most isolated from others.

You’re definitely not the only one that wants to pack it full from the beginning. 🤣 Guilty here! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Q: Do you run drip on these mature trees? If so, how often do you run it and for how long? Thanks for the morning inspiration! ❤️

We have great hostas in our shady spots. Just beware that the deer love them. We had to stop using them on the front yard because of the deer. But the Backyard is fenced in and they grow amazingly. We have some irises in the shade also that bloom but not nearly as long they should.

Thanks again for another great video. Just out of curiosity how long did it take from start to finish did it take? I believe some people who have nevre had the chanceto garden have no idea how much work you actually do.

This was a great video inspiration, I have so many areas of my garden with all day dappled shade. Do you know the type of iris that is successful in that light? I love that additional texture with the hostas!

You should investigate astilbe. I have a row of Deutschland white astilbe that come up as a feathery cloud and require pretty much zero attention.
