You inspired me to finally plant garlic. So I did. Right after I finished tulips & daffodils. Nestled them into my new raised beds, that is after chopping icey soil cuz it’s almost the end of November (I’m in a high zone 5/5b). Finished as the sun went down. Two minutes after taking shoes off and collapsing in a comfy chair, the lightbulb went on. I planted whole heads, not cloves!!! Well... back out the next morning to undo & re-do before the big storm hits. Wish me luck.

You CAN braid hard neck garlic! First, you can harvest the tender scapes ( delicious!) for stirfry or pickling ( like pickling asparagus tips) in the closed bud stage before the scape tip fully forms the flower. Follow the curly scape stalk down to the base of the plant and cut, leaving the other garlic leaves in place to continue growing until you are actually ready to harvest the garlic. At garlic harvest you'll only have a short hard neck stump to process for braiding. If you choose to leave the scape on, I clip the forming flower bud off the tip so the developing bud isnt wasting energy making seeds as well as an underground bulb. At harvest dig up the garlic bulb leaving the stems and leaves attached and dry/ cure the bulbs as usual. Once the bulb has cured, spread the softer leaves to the side and using a wood or rubber mallet, gently pound just the hard dried scape stem to soften and make pliable the woody stem fibers. Dont over pound the stem, just enough to make pliable and try not to pound the dried side leaves as dried leaves can breakup and you won't have anything to braid. Braid as usual. I braid when the leaves and stems still have a tiny bit of green left in them so they dont crumble and fall apart during the braiding handling process, and let the braided ropes hang in a cool dry place to finish the final leaf drying. You can still use the garlic as the braid dries. If you do this, braid as tightly as you can as the slightly green leaves will shrink a little more as they dry.😊

Awesome video. This fall the husband and I are redoing out tiny back yard by putting in a little patio and raised beds. Im planning what to plant for next year and I thought about fall garlic. Seems so simple. Thanks for easy explanation.

Congrats on the new growing space! That's one of the unheralded beauties of garlic is that a lot of times people plan a new garden in the fall, then let it sit until spring planting. With garlic, you can plant it NOW and then be harvesting your first crop instead planting your first one!

Watching you plant your garlic made me think of Gilroy California they would have a Garlic festival every year, The whole town smelled so good with all the different foods that they made. I believe it was in the month of July people from everywhere would come. I lived there for quite a few years. It was exciting.

Garlic was all sold out last fall when I started looking. I just went to a Publix and bought organic garlic and planted it. I just harvested it and they were huge! I planted the two packs I bought, which was a LOT of garlic lol. But it worked fine if you can’t find any online or at a garden center.

I really like the layout of the garden! And just a FYI, most Italian garlic are soft neck, not a hard neck... Maybe its just the way its labelled where you live, but we grow lots of garlic, and use an italian variety from where my family originates from in Italy, and i can tell you i only every seen soft neck garlic there... When it comes time to harvest it, you braid them, and hang them.

Thank you so much. I have been wanting to plant garlic for a few years now. I have heavy clay here in TN so I would need to trench mine. If I can still find some at my garden center, I think I will plant some just to see how it does. I've never had fresh garlic but everything I read says it is so much better than store bought. I love garlic. I so appreciate you taking the time to show us how to do this. 😍🙃

You didn't mention anything about mulching your garlic. I've always thought it was necessary to do so. The one year that I didn't mulch, I had a complete crop failure. I've already planted a hard neck variety that my brother gave him that he's been planting for years and years this is my second year of planting it. Or maybe the 3rd. My Harvest this spring was really strange because I didn't get any huge bulbs and most of them are rather small but they still taste good! I'm thinking they might have got to dried out when we had a dry spell in the spring
