Today I went to the Lost Horizons nursery, it was quite a trek out there. I have never seen such an epic nursery in such a small forested area like that. I got 2 Opuntia there (I don't know if you saw they had cylindropuntias near the main area to pay) a chicks n hens 'Oddity' cultivar, 2 of the rattlesnake plantain orchids, and a weird plant called Vebratum or something, long stalk with purple flowers. I was in such a good mood at that nursery, it was really well organized, full of plants, and they even managed to grow most of the plants they were selling on site, which I rarely see at nurseries. It reminded me of videos of some nurseries in the tropics. It smelled like walnuts, the dog was friendly, there were trees everywhere (my favourite part). All in all, it was pretty enchanting for me. I've been looking for the rattlesnake plantain for years (and I've only been growing plants for 4 years). I almost got lost in the display garden area.

The Ludisia "Spider man" is a cross with Macodes (called Macodisia, if I'm not mistaken). So basically, you own every genus of jewel orchid. Cool!

Dante Bresolin That is Very cool! I hope they all grow well... the "Spider Man" seems to be a really slow grower for some reason.

This will be fun to follow..I thought pine needles prompted more acidity in soil..like keeping blue hydrangea blue add crunched up pine needles ..I'm a beginner tho

Debra Lounder Pine needles will work best.. I need to find some pine trees..lol.. It's funny how you see them everywhere but when you need the needles there are none to be found.

I have one of the cypripediums, but a bug ate the flower stems, couldn't indentify the bug, and now my cyp has to regrow from a small plant again and won't flower for years :I . Did they have any more of them left at the nursery? Also, how many of those downy rattlesnake plantains are left? I've been looking everywhere for them!

Is that a brugmansia to the right of the screen?

I think that you are seeing a Voodoo Lily. I have a Brugs but it's not in this area.

You never want to dig a hole then fill it with good soil. Because the amended soil will drain so much faster it basically makes a bucket effect and can drown your plants. Your shovel will even pack the clay making it drain even worse. It would be much better if you mixed your amendments in 50/50 with your native soil.

SoCalGardening good suggestion. the roots of this plant ramble just under the soil surface so it should be fine.
