My neighbor has the same ones that you have in your yard. They are so beautiful. I get so much joy out of their bush! And for anyone else reading my comment - these plants are tough! I am in North Texas where the heat from Hades controls our summertime temps. There is no drip or sprinkler system where the plant lives and it THRIVES!!! It's cut down to a few inches above the base in the winter - only to grow as tall as me each year & I'm 5'4".

These are called hearty hibiscus! The winter frost kills them to the ground and you cut away the dead limbs and they cone back every late spring! Mine are back and beautiful!

Good evening, it's evening here in the Philippines whenever i tune in, Christmas feels with those red and green hibiscus, gorgeous blooms, and in our tropical country we call hibiscus as "gumamela". Children mashed the blooms with liquid soap to make bubbles. lol to the flying dust with your little gardener.

Phyllis, I had some a few years ago in yellow. I let them get ulgy looking in the winter and didn’t deadhead. Then in March I cut them to the ground and by summer they were back in full force. They grew will over 5ft’. Now I’m going to get more to make a hedge around my utility box. Love them and they are my favorite tropical plant.

Hi Laura, the colours of those hibiscus flowers are just gorgeous, even the leaves are beautiful. We in South Africa take the hibiscus plants for granted because they are a very common plant in our gardens and the flowers are not so big like yours are. Even the foliage is beautiful, I would like for my garden to be beautiful like yours one day. Congratulations on your second pregnancy.

HIbiscus always remind me of my childhood. We had one growing in a big container by the pool and every summer I would wait for it to put on its show. Seemed like it took forever, with the hydrangeas nearby already in full bloom. They certainly make up for lost time. Looks like your little helper needs his own auger. ~ Lisa

Oh my gosh such beautiful plants for my coffee with Laura this morning! You had such a good helper in digging the holes and that is so neat the Caleb loves to garden. I can see you and Benjamin in a couple more years out planting together. I absolutely love hibiscus and fell in love with them when I lived on the island of Kauai for a few years. I am so excited to get some of these for the playground next year (hopefully) as I think the children will enjoy them. I found a small plant at a Lowes and brought it home only to discover that squirrels love the blossoms and they ate all the buds off!!!! So I am now trying to protect it from the squirrels so it will bloom again LOL

I have a beautiful Cherry Choco Latte Hibiscus that I placed in a tub of water. This is the second summer for this plant and it always amazes me how beautiful and large it has gotten. It is in the original garden center pot of soil and I make sure the tub always has plenty of water. It does make me sad when the blooms disappear so quickly or a wind storm will knock them off, but they always keep blooming. Love this plant. I'm in Kentucky.

All of the Hibiscus varieties that you showcased today are gorgeous! I purchased one called Starry Starry Night, it's a PW plant that has the dark foliage with cherry and white blooms. I need to get it planted this week. We are experiencing beautiful weather here for zone 5a, it's in the low to mid 80's, but unfortunately, no rain. The Blooms on my Summerific Cherry Choco Latte are No Joke!! They are HUGE! I planted this last year. It literally looked dead this Spring, Just a couple of twigs popped up out of the ground. I myself am quick to pull out things that don't look nice or dead. Thank gosh, I didn't pull this out😳! The blooms last just 1 day, Thankfully it's full of blooms! So no issues with lack of blooms. I've had great luck with pruning our Berry Awesome back in the Spring - not Fall - and pinching back the new growth when it's about 8-10 inches tall to encourage branching/more blooms. The only pest I've encountered on my hibiscus is a hibiscus sawfly... They do a decent amount of damage if left unchecked, but the PW hibiscus is super strong and hardy and can stand up to a bit of chewing. Overall this is absolutely one of the best perennials in my garden! Zone 5b, NY!
@emilykiesling23154 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem with those little pest , so what I did was after I washed my dishes I threw the rest of the dish water over the plant and it really kept those pest away , I haven’t seen any pest on them in awhile. It worked for me.

My dad grew up in So Cal in the 50s and 60s and has fond memories of the big beautiful hibiscus in his yard. My parents have lived in Nor Cal out in the country my whole life and Dad wouldn’t trade it for anything (he has a beautiful large hillside yard to work in), but it’s too cool and shady for any tropical plants or even citrus. They recently got a second home closer to me in So Cal, and he is excited to grow things in the yards there. The FIRST thing he said was how much he wants a hibiscus! It would be really fun to grow one well suited to making agua frescas (jamaica) or tea. But I also LOVE the double-bloomed ones, especially the blue one you have, Laura! Maybe small Hibiscus in pots lining the drive would be nice. We are going to try to incorporate a lot of CA natives and I am unsure of how to design in harmony with both those and the tropical plants that are so popular here (palms, plumeria, bird of paradise, bougainvillea, split-leaf philodendron, and citrus are very common in residential gardens alongside the trees and hedges popular all over the US).

My neighbor planted 2 of these several years ago. The flowers are enormous and yes the leaves to do get darker as the summer deepens. I would love to have 3, but since I can't dig anymore, that is out. (Never ask the spouse to do something, it is a battle.) Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
